. Enfin peut etre plus d'interprétation artistique.
I'm learning this song for my performance concentration class. I'm an -ALTO- and every time I hear this song, i think "Why did my teacher give this to me?"
ouch, that would be hard to do for an alto! But you can hear that she kind of 'floats' the high notes, she doesn't really sing them full voice.... Good Luck with the song
try to get out of this mindset. contrary to popular belief, the term "alto" designated to a female singer is only relevant to the line she sings in a choral setting. There are very few true contralto soloists in the world. The vast majority of female singers are coloratura sopranos or mezzo sopranos. Within these two ranges are further distinctions like lyrical, dramatic, and Wagnerian. Happy singing!
@malibu64 While it is true that alto is just a line in choral settings, "contralto", as he originally asked about, is something different. Like Soprano, or Mezzo-Soprano, contralto is also a classification of the female voice, being the lowest of the three (Soprano-Mezzo-Contralto).
@malibu64 Incorrect... coloratura is a subset of soprano, just as lyric and dramatic are. True coloratura sopranos are uncommon - lyric sopranos are, by contrast, a dime a dozen.
My comment, 3 months after yours, may come in too late, but since you are an alto, may I recommend transposing the piece from its original key in D minor down to B minor?
Natalie Stützmann has done just this - and the effect on the song is superb.
May I recommend that you look for her recording of it in your music library? Actually, buy it if you can. It's an investment you will not regret.
Actually, I did it in the original key and I hit the note without any problem! :3 (and no warm up. ^^; Recital day was crazy and my pianist didn't show up till 2 mins before the recital)
I've been working on it hard and I'm hitting A flat with no problem. I never thought I'd be able to hit a G like I did, but I worked really hard and made it. My teacher would have never let me sing it in a lower key. She wants me to get higher and higher lol. But thanks for the suggestion. ^^
Perhaps you teacher gave that to you cuz it's BEAUTIFUL and he or she wants to hear the best of the cuttest french songs in your voice. Try it at b, if c minor's still high for you.
I totally agree, beautiful peice and voice. I do however think that it is funny that all of the peices in this Op. modulate to the reletive major :P. You gotta think that Faure must hate having all of his student music out there, like how the theme of the piece "Lydia" (Op. 4 I think, but don't qoute me on that) is in the Lydian mode and in F which just happens to be all white keys on the piano in Lydian. :P But man, you have to give it to the man, even his Student work is Gorgeous! :D
i really think this is a beautiful song, i'm gst learnig it now, and can honestly say i hav never learnt such a gorgous song before, this particular version is briliant! x x x x
Thanks to this CD, I've taken a strong interest in hearing more of Faure's songs. BTW "Apres un reve" is murder for me! I'm in B-minor, but I can't seem to hit the high D in the opening phrase. I can reach the high E on the first "Helas!" if I figure how to cover it correctly. It's a slow process but I think I'll be ready for my next Rep class and Jury. I'm also thinking about singing "La Chanson du Pecheur" instead.
Well, I signed up for the class thinking it would help me with my French pronunciation. However, I didn't know that it was mostly for those already well versed in music.
Interesting. I have to sing this for my French Diction class. Keep in mind I am not a music major. At all (can't read music even...). Kind of sucks. Hope I do well! Thanks for this version!
omg beautiful.....i'm singing this song in a master class next week so i thought i'd give a listen to how other people interpret it and this is by FAR my favourite randition....i need this album....wow i'm in aw with goosebumps.....i always complain about singers online on youtube but no complaint here!!!
In the words of Frederic Chopin: the art of simplicity is the hardest thing to achieve. And Mademoiselle Gens achieved it. This is so beautiful, bravo!
I just bought this album yesterday and "Apres un reve" and "Au bord de l'eau" are already my favorites!!! I'm a voice student and I'll be singing "Apres un reve" in my lessons this fall; I sang "Lydia" last semester. I'd like to try "Au bord de l'eau" next spring.
Good luck singing it! Let us know how it goes. I think Apres un reve is the best song on the cd, in fact the other composers songs, I didn't find them as interesting. Nuit d'etoiles was interesting...I need to listen more carefully to it.
What a lucky coincidence, I uploaded this yesterday and you bought the cd :)

Elle aurait intérêt a l'aborder un ton plus bas. Elle est soprano mais de tessiture particulièrement élevée. Le légato n'y est pas toujours

Did you like this music though? I suggest you look for Apres Un Reve, it's the best song in my opinion, and Gens is the best singer :)
