Wolves keep the elk/deer/coyote populations in check, maintaining a fragile balance that, as we observed with Yellowstone National Park, goes out of whack rather easily. sure, human population grows faster than wolves, coyotes etc.. however, consider that first off, there are far larger human populations to wolves etc, that reproduction number is obviously going to be larger.. secondly, the carrying capacity to humans vs predators etc is also going to be larger, as there are far more rural and urban areas to support a larger carrying capacity compared to wildlife.. far more forests are being knocked down or destroyed for development, farming, etc.. h

Just because they say they want to reduce the population to 150 wolves doesnt mean the 1,000 or so wolves are gonna be all killed. Like any other hunting season its a goal and those goals are rarely met. As with the last wolf season only 1% of hunters filled their tags.

They also live in packs, witch makes there kill rate much higher then if they were a lone. Though, most packs only kill 1 elk for every 20 times they hunt. Also, you seem to forget that your prey can defend themselves. If elk standafd fight, they have a much better chance of survivel, mainly because wolves don't want to get gord by hoves.

When I went there, we found at least 10 herds up there. And that was in one little aria. Do you honestly know anything that wolves do for the enviorment? There preditors. I live in the rockies on N. Idaho, this is not the full story... First off the only thing that was snuck in on this ordeal was these wolves in the rockies... they did not migrate here, they did not live here, they were transported (dumped on us) without warning. Since then, 7 or so years ago, they have multiplied from a couple hundred to over 1000's, they have been a constant threat to our livestock, our pets and our families. We didn't ask for this problem, but we are open to better solutions.
Constant threat to your livestock huh? According to various USFWS reports, the number of sheep killed by wolves in Idaho every year is around 150-200, and 50-100 cattle.
This is around only 1% of all livestock losses per year in Idaho. Plus, you get compensation for every animal killed by a wolf. And the wolf is killed if it regularly attacks livestock.
And there is not one documented ATTACK (not 'scary' encounter) from a wolf in the Northern Rockies, let alone in the U.S.
@immywolf The reports are all great but I live here. I have seen everything that has happened and developed here, not any documented or scary encounter? You gotta understand most people that live up here in the rockies are rough and rugged people, they don't make reports. I personally know of many scary encounters that have happened and friend who fired near 2 wolves in self defense, they tried to attack him for an Elk kill he made during hunting season.... (He didnt shoot them just scared them)

But predators, believe it or not, are VITAL animals. Without them, ecosystems go haywire. We have to adapt.

Just because they say they want to reduce the population to 150 wolves doesnt mean the 1,000 or so wolves are gonna be all killed. Like any other hunting season its a goal and those goals are rarely met. As with the last wolf season only 1% of hunters filled their tags.

@aidensflame They also weed out the week, and because most streanth is genetic, that makes the elk that aren't killed much stronger, healthier, and faster. They also live in packs, witch makes there kill rate much higher then if they were a lone. Though, most packs only kill 1 elk for every 20 times they hunt. Also, you seem to forget that your prey can defend themselves. If elk standafd fight, they have a much better chance of survivel, mainly because wolves don't want to get gord by hoves.

When I went there, we found at least 10 herds up there. And that was in one little aria. Do you honestly know anything that wolves do for the enviorment? There preditors. The wolf population exeded the max. population thats was set and agreed upon, by double (you'll have to forgive me I forgot the numbers)! 1000 is the tip of a HUGE iceburg. Early 1900's, 1927 is still below the half-way point, I was rounding down. Open season is what we have on coyotes, free hunting all year round. Holacaust is how its spelled (Google is a wonderfull thing). Its the ONLY thing that will save the elk.

Its not "open season", and no way could they ever go exinct, hunting is always controlled, no animals have gone exinct in the U.S. because of hunting since laws limiting hunting were passed early in the 1900's. Hunting is not a bunch of reckless hill-billys shooting up everything. Hunters care more about wildlife than ANY enviromental group, we've donated millions, no enviromental group has! We've even donated more land than anyone!

I live in the rockies on N. Idaho, this is not the full story... First off the only thing that was snuck in on this ordeal was these wolves in the rockies... they did not migrate here, they did not live here, they were transported (dumped on us) without warning. Since then, 7 or so years ago, they have multiplied from a couple hundred to over 1000's, they have been a constant threat to our livestock, our pets and our families. We didn't ask for this problem, but we are open to better solutions.

This is around only 1% of all livestock losses per year in Idaho. Plus, you get compensation for every animal killed by a wolf. And the wolf is killed if it regularly attacks livestock.
And there is not one documented ATTACK (not 'scary' encounter) from a wolf in the Northern Rockies, let alone in the U.S.

@immywolf The reports are all great but I live here. I have seen everything that has happened and developed here, not any documented or scary encounter? You gotta understand most people that live up here in the rockies are rough and rugged people, they don't make reports. I personally know of many scary encounters that have happened and friend who fired near 2 wolves in self defense, they tried to attack him for an Elk kill he made during hunting season.... (He didnt shoot them just scared them)

@immywolf I don't know about all that or what others outside the situation think. I just know what I hear from the locals, where we live is a very very rural and small area. Everyone knows everyone... and those numbers are for all of Idaho... that 1% for all of Idaho, the 150-200 sheep and 50-100 cattle.... that is all happening in this very small area of N. Idaho, on the border of Montana near Canada. Those numbers are big to us... Like I said I am down for better solutions, lets hear them.

@immywolf Just read the description, maybe we are talking about 2 seperate things... What I am talking about is hundreds of miles North of Yellowstone... Near the Canadian border... search for St. Maries Idaho on google maps, thats about 10 miles from where they dumped them. Our elk population has suffered since the wolves, we would rather have the elk than the wolves trust me. Also let me make it clear I am not a hunter and I don't harm any animals, never killed anything and I don't plan to.

OF course, that's the problem. Predators are always problems, especially wide-spread pack animals like wolves.
Predators are the hardest animal for humans to live with. I can TOTALLY understand that elk would be easier to live with- good for hunting, eat grass, not livestock, are quiet and peaceful, and aren't the bad guy of hundreds of fairy-tales.
But predators, believe it or not, are VITAL animals. Without them, ecosystems go haywire. We have to adapt.
