  • Thanks you so much for posting this Hartford magic.

  • That is not a banjo mod that is a tuning mechanism, it's out there if you search for it.

  • great this man was blue grass

  • I met him in the pilothouse of the Julia Belle. Captn Dennis Trone's sternwheeler steamboat. John was quite fond of steamboatin' and got his pilot's license at the wheel of the JBS and took time to pilot when time allowed.

  • He was a treat to all!! Thank you John!!

  • AMAZING TO SAY THE LEAST TY

  • What are those tuners called at the base of the head of the banjo that he's using?

  • Comment removed

  • They are Cam-Tuners. Occasionally called D-Tuners

  • or scruggs tuners :)

  • Exactly

  • WOW

  • that is truly awesome, I wish there was some songs from aeroplane on u tube though

  • This is just wonderful, thanks for posting it.

Once, about 15 yrs ago John came to our Missouri River town to help open our new Riverfront Park.

When it started to rain, all but about 25 people left and John invited everyone to come under the pavilion with him while he played about 10 more songs.

It was a real treat - truly a memorable day. In the music world, people of his caliber are real gems.

  • I love this piece, which can be found on Chris Sharp's excellent first album. Thanks for posting the video.

I saw John play a bunch of times in the late 90s/early 2000s, but never saw him play banjo.

  • he does not look well here.. :(

  • This was getting up there in the later years, but compared to some of his last shows, he's still in well form here. Still Sad though :(

  • On the other, given that he was ill, I'm glad he had his music to sustain him and hide out in. We should all be so lucky.

  • @skye131924 sounds great though

  • what are those things on the banjo head called? what exactly are they doing? and are they anything like what earl scruggs had for switching tunings quickly(i saw something about the latter in the back of an old book of his once)

  • it looks to me that its adjusting the tension of the strings :)

    And its just done masterfully!

  • Scruggs or D tuners that adjust the strings and drop them half a tone or more depending on the setting.

  • very cool =)

  • the rest of this concert is coming soon :)
