I met him in the pilothouse of the Julia Belle. Captn Dennis Trone's sternwheeler steamboat. John was quite fond of steamboatin' and got his pilot's license at the wheel of the JBS and took time to pilot when time allowed.
my #1.john is the greatest . saw him live when i was a kid. changed my life. this was the concert i was at. ...... yeah.... ( thats how he ended every song).....yeah....
johnny would you send me a dvd or cd when you played on country family reunion that violin song P L E A S E I LOVE YOUR MUSIC I PLAY IN BRASON MISSOURI
Once, about 15 yrs ago John came to our Missouri River town to help open our new Riverfront Park.
When it started to rain, all but about 25 people left and John invited everyone to come under the pavilion with him while he played about 10 more songs.
It was a real treat - truly a memorable day. In the music world, people of his caliber are real gems.
what are those things on the banjo head called? what exactly are they doing? and are they anything like what earl scruggs had for switching tunings quickly(i saw something about the latter in the back of an old book of his once)
it was taped i beleive in bards town beards town kentucky as he corrects himself in this video mark schatz in the back on bass is great as well
he does some ham bone with john and mike compton {mando}has as john says "more than mere encyclopedic knowledge of the mandolin i think kentucky public broadcasting may have the copies
Was that taped at the Appalacian festival? We went there several years ago and watched John play live. Loved it! He seemed to favor the old folk tunes then. We miss him. A great and original musician.
Jimmie Hendricks of the banjo.

I love this piece, which can be found on Chris Sharp's excellent first album. Thanks for posting the video.
I saw John play a bunch of times in the late 90s/early 2000s, but never saw him play banjo.

he does not look well here.. :(
skye131924 3 years ago
This was getting up there in the later years, but compared to some of his last shows, he's still in well form here. Still Sad though :(
johnny85er 3 years ago
On the other, given that he was ill, I'm glad he had his music to sustain him and hide out in. We should all be so lucky.

it looks to me that its adjusting the tension of the strings :)
And its just done masterfully!
skye131924 3 years ago
Scruggs or D tuners that adjust the strings and drop them half a tone or more depending on the setting.
