Well you could use set the _minlight key. It would add a minimum level of light to the entire map. Floodlighting would also do the trick. You can access either by selecting any brush and hitting n on the keyboard. The list of keys will appear and you can add them as needed in the key/value boxes below.
To make an object emanate light requires the use of shaders and glowmaps. These initially look difficult to use but they arent really. For glowmaps I recommend just opening up existing light textures and taking a look. For shaders there are various tutorials floating around the internet but I recommend asking on the Xonotic or Nexuiz forums.
When I make a light I dont get the whole globe thing but I have yet to test this map, I was just wondering if some versions (as far as I know I have the latest) just dont have that?
Its just an option that you can set in the settings somewhere. Its useful for judging where to place the light and how bright it will be against the surface.
Thanks Sep3lio, this really helped. Do you play Xonotic much/are you on the Xonotic forums?

I'm around every now and then. Nowhere near as active as I used to be though and I haven't mapped anything in a long time!

@vaibzzz123 : Select Xonotic in the list of the installable programs, a usual. Installations in GNU/Linux are simpler than in Windows.
