  • I'm (hopefully) going to be second flute in honour band this year, and we're going to play this piece as well as several other Hazo pieces. Hazo will be a guest director for the group. We're going to play at the Mondavi Center in Davis on October 23. I can't wait.

  • Samuel Hazo was always my favorite thing to play in band. It's so unique from the usual band fair.

  • my bands playing this for our spring concert i personally love the piece.

  • My teacher told our band that this song was written for a high school that was going to be demolished. The 1st movement , called Memories, was the people who were going to miss the high school, and they were remembering the school, the 2nd, Qui Non Deficit, is the construction and demolition, and the 3rd, New Beginning, is the opening of the new high school. The 2nd movement starts at 2:20, and the 3rd at 4:34. I love this piece, and can't wait to perform it at our orchestra's concert.

  • yeah it was Hazos old school and the schools Alma Matter is repeated in different ways through the song...

  • @thetrumpetrocks yep. he was my teacher in fifth and sixth grade. he was awesome. we play this song at graduation every year now!

  • @BassClr13 Yeah, I was surprised when my director let me read the introduction to his score. I was convinced that it had to be about something more...profound maybe (I was thinking reincarnation because of all the Latin)? But then I read it was about the school and I looked at it with a totally different perspective. It's such a wonderful piece. And so fun to play! :D
