My old fat long-haired cat started getting huge knots all over him, despite daily brushings since he was a kitten. It got so bad that it was necessary to get him groomed because the hair would be so knotted that it would pull and hurt him every time he walked around or got picked up or petted. Since we've had him groomed he's no longer in pain and much happier. Sometimes grooming is the HUMANE thing to do. Stop criticizing, people. This is necessary. Not vanity.

My groomer charges £50 a time but I got my own Oster trimmers for that much and hopefully will be able to zap matts as they appear. :)

@Yamcha67 ummm gee lets think.......if you have a cat with that much hair (i have one) it doesnt matter if you brush them everyday, they still get matted. and if you dont shave them its really uncomfortable. another reason people shave them is because of the heat during the spring and summer. especially if its an outdoor cat!

Probably an Oster. Its pretty loud. Andis is much quieter.

Oster a5 is what they look like. I prefer to use Laube with a variable speed. they are quieter and you can start them at a lower speed to give the animal a chance to get use to the noise. Plus in my opinion the Oster clippers are garbage. Also a cats skin is very thin & easy to cut. The only blade I'd use is a #10. Anything longer can cut the skin & anything shorter will burn.

For those who don't know Oster & most other professional clippers have snap on blades
