  • By a long long long long long long long long long long long long way, this is the saddest film I've ever seen.

  • we were watching this movie in drama and a few of my classmates were being so rude by making fun of the little girl and some parts of the movie while the others were just crying. those people truly don't understand how sad and true this movie is. thing is, i started crying even more because i realized i would feel the same way if this happened to my sister.

  • One of my most favourite movies ever.

  • Watched it for the first time when I was 9 and it captivated my mind, now watching it 22 years later, the power still there!

  • LETS GET THIS MOVIE ENOUGH VOTES TO GO FROM 124 TO 1 ON THE IMDB TOP 250

  • 'I've seen the nations rise and fall

I've heard their stories, heard them all

but love's the only engine of survival'

probably the saddest movie you ever seen

  • Setsuko forever.

  • For me, this movie was like a beautiful but sorrow poem.

  • Beautiful movie :') depressing and it made me cry everytime I thought about it. It's really wonderful.

  • I can understand that "Grave of Fireflies" is a heart core devastating sad story. But it also reflects a very sad truth; THIS happened and still happens all over the world. And it's our own responsibility to look at it and make a difference on the decisions that we make, the actions that make a difference; for real. And it can be as small as being actually nice to someone that makes a BIG change. Be honest and truthful, the world can be helped even by a little action if we take responsibility.

  • i cried almost the whole movie ... beautifull sad and touching

  • jeez the info box is such a spoiler... hope nobody reads it before they see the movie...

  • Even sadder than Watership Down

  • @YuhonIsGod wow how can you even say that.these innocent kids did not deserve any of this they and did not even have anything to do with the war. in war everyone thinks theyre right.

  • @Dianesaurr

What about the people of Nanking massacre

  • @YuhonIsGod read that Massacare stuff you said to read yeah i agree that its was pretty cruel 100,000-300,000 estimate Chinese killed but that doesn't mean any person deserves to die we were all born for a reason

  • @YamahaxWolf

    Karma.

  • @YuhonIsGod

200,000 Nanjing people at that time.

Show evidence to kill 300,000 people.

Stop the slaughter of (Tibet )and( Uighur )right now.

You have caused the trouble all over the world.

  • @sinobix

Sorry kid I'm not a mainlander. Nice try though.

  • the best..!!!!

    it made me cry... :(((

    O_o

  • fav movie ever

  • Why woulden america do such a horrible thing ! =( this movie make me cry ! if i did live on their time i woulden help them both ;(

  • @party4gamer My friend, after seeing this, every single human would help them. But we simply can't.

  • This movie should be rated 17. Children shouldn't watch it as it's just toooo SAD.

  • I've yet to watch this, but I've watched Barefoot Gen (An anime film about the Hiroshima bombings) & that made me cry,so God knows what this film will do to me...

  • If barefoot Gen made you cry...this film will make you sob your heart out for years. Must watch!!

  • Child in Japan sees this [animeshon] without the age requirement.

  • ive never watched this with someone else and never will. all i need is a bath towel.

  • Without doubt, this is one of movies that I will never forget. The beatiful, realistic pictures are packed with emotions that make watching this movie a very painful and difficult experice, yet you will find just as uneasy to take your eyes off the screen.

Anti-war anime at its very finest.

  • Maybe one day I would like to see this anime!

  • Don't. Believe me, you'll be sorry you did. This was the saddest movie I have ever seen. I couldn't sleep for 2 days after seeing this.

  • I see! I believe ya!

  • lool

whell i´ve just saw it and it makes me think...but i think i'm not going to have dificulties in sleeping ^^

    good movie after all

  • How did Setsuko die?

  • Comment removed

  • Wa-hey! Nice spoilers there, asshole. Why are you even on a page for the trailer if you've already seen it?

  • thats one of the most depressing aspects in this movie...we dont know...maybe is the hunger...maybe is desease...or maybe are the two things...she was alucinating in the end so I think it was the hunger

  • Oh and sorry for the spoiler to everybody, but after all this is a movie of 88 so who didnt see it...GO SEE IT QUICK =P

  • great, sad and touching anti- war movie !

  • Such a beautiful and sad movie.

  • I love this movie so much, when I first got it, I never watched it, but when I did, I weeped for about an hour XD

    Its such a beautiful movie...

  • sadest story yet !

i cried in the endd =[

  • This is such a depressing story, largely because its based on true events of disgusting disregard for civilian life

I hope the American Government and Army can watch this film and sleep at night knowing they caused all this to so many innocent civilians who never wanted anything to do with the war

America, look those people in the eye, not just men but women and children and say what happened to them was right, because if you can then your wrong in so many ways

  • not just japan. also baghdad, greneda, panama. other countries bombed by us over the years. although japan did get the worse of it.

  • What are you talking about?

This film is based on a true story yes. But did you know the Americans are the ones who helped the author get back on his feet after he sunk into his depression and was living on the street. Yes, the Americans really helped the Japanese after the war destroyed much of thier country.

This film is not anti-us. You don't even hear a country being named EVER. This is a film about war in general. So hush up. Especially sicne you don't even have your facts straight.

  • My facts are as straight as I read them, just because the US censor everything that makes them look bad, which they did ALOT of during occupied Japan

And anyway during WW2 all sides committed numerous attrocities and i've mentioned them

ive NEVER heard an American on here denouncing the US army for the 1,000 rapes of women and girls on Okinawa during the first week of the occupation while I have enough pride to denounce my own country for their war crimes

  • I just cried so hard from watching just this trailer...holy cow. One of the most beautiful movies of all time.

  • I watched this last night i cried

  • I love this movie.

  • i cry even when i see trailer now....

  • I cried in the openning credits and the end. :(

  • The writer was a survivor of the Kobe bombings who wrote the book to apologize to his little sister who died during the war. The book and movie are semi-biographical, its not completely true. In fact, I believed his sister died of Typhoid fever, not malnutrition.

Still, this movie is a must see, and it only highlights the brilliance of Miyaki and his craft of movie making. Every time I watch it, I think about it for days. I cry every time I see her in the basket at the end.

  • @spooninjapan This was directed by Isao Takahata, not Miyazaki.

  • @spooninjapan setsuka here dies of consistent DIahorrea leading to malnutrition

  • @spooninjapan setsuka here dies of consistent Diarrhea leading to malnutrition

  • @spooninjapan In truth I believe the author had two sisters that died; one from sickness, like you said, and the other from malnutrition.

  • this movie is soooooo freakin sad....i was wondering is it based on a true story??

  • there are thousands of stories just like this in WWII japan..at least they were lucky to not have been in hiroshima or nagasaki

  • And England and Germany and France and Russia and Italy and China and Poland and every other country that was in the line of fire. 25 million military casualties compared to 47 million civilian casualties.

  • It's not, the events occurred but the cahraters are fictional

  • so sad T.T

  • One hour after this film ended I started crying and cursing divinity. I wept for hours, for the first time in 16 years. I have no ideea how the movie did that, because it's not TRYING to make you sad like other movies do. Remember that the story is true, the plot was written by the little girl's brother. Watch the movie and you'll understand why this girl is the most beloved child in history. Damn, even this trailer made my jaw hurt.

  • saddest movie ever!
