I have a baby common snapping turtle and I use to handle him alot but I haven't for awhile and he got big and when I go to touch him he snaps his head back and scares me often but I want to be able to handle him again. How do you suggest I do this and how do I pick him up again?

@ghostrider1559 The best way to handle a large common snapping turtle is to grab it with one hand at the very back of the carapace and use your other hand to lift it up from the middle of the plastron. This way the turtle's claws won't do too much damage to your arm and the head can't reach your hands.

@Venrellin lol They are dinosaurs pretty much. I got mine from Mr John Richards, the biggest alligator snapper farmer in the country. He's up in missouri or michigan or something. But he sells them for $75 a piece and $25 for overnight shipping so it will be an even $100. Just go to google and type turtleman and you should get his sight.

One other matter you need to know, it is important you keep your tank super clean, they can really generate some serious health issues if your tank gets messed up.

I don't know if your familiar with the species these kind of snapper grow to 180 lbs, also in time you'll have to keep them in separate tanks as well after a while they will attack one another, also you can feed them certain types of meats, I had a common snapper which I feed it cook chicken, kiabasa sauage, grapes, cooked vegetables, cooked hamburger meat, fish, etc...

When i first got her she was a lil under 5 inches, when she passed she weighed in the area of 20 lbs, had her about 7yrs.

@Kamikaze00Meds No. Because its illegal to own Alligator Snapping turtles anywhere in the US unless your a licensed rehabilitation or zoo. They're considered 'endangered'.

However, owning a "common" snapping turtle (smooth shell) is totally fine. If you do get an alligator snapper, just don't draw too much attention to yourself or you might get slapped with a nice fine.
