I'm in the US and I have a question for citizens in other "allied" nations. We're pretty much indoctrinated early on that the USA more or less "won" WWII. What are you taught in regards to who won the war?

Yet if you really want to get technical about it, it was the Russians that bled the German Army dry on the Eastern Front. The war was lost even before the Americans put troops on the ground in the ETO. Once Germany hadn't beaten Russia within the first 6 months, probably less actually, they were never prepared for a long protracted war. America joining the fight just made it official
Ridiculous as it may be, it is what we are led to believe in our early education. The question wasn't intended to lead to a discussion on what country "won" the war. If you need clarification, the question was meant to satisfy my curiosity on what younger folks in other nations are led to believe, either through formal education, films, or word of mouth. In the US we tended to get less than the whole story in public school whether the subject was American history or world history.

Yes all people are the same. Sense of vengeance lives in each normal man (french, english. russian and so on). But i can tell that in Red Army it wasn.t system like in German army . It means that there was strict order to all comanders witch was made when red army went to german territory - don.t admit such things. There was strong punishment for such things to solgiers. You have to give the Germans credit where its due.. constant action or deployment since the late 1930's US men did not start engaging in mass until 1941 but really 1942. With that it shows you the might of the US at the time to only be in harms way for 3 years.. Industrial power was key.

The yankees were sitting it out selling weapons and making money till 1944 when the war was over and they didn't want USSR to gain control of the whole Germany. USSR have faced 3/4 of the German army and pushed them back to Berlin.T-34 is the most mass produced tank so far. Forget Pearl Harbour, the war was on the Eastern front. Even though it's not well reported in computer games and movies. We lost 48times men USA did.

Hitler Youth? Nein. I was a Cub Scout in the 60's and was taught Rifle safety and firing by a WW1 Veteran who saw combat in the trenches. On the farm with my cousins we played "big" army and "little" army. Big army was when we were the soldiers. Little army was fought with the little green army men so popular back then. We studied war as children and learned how to set up fields of fire and ambushes. Also, studied counterattacking to blunt offensives. We were getting ready for 'Nam...
Continued- As far as "Hitler Youth" went my 6 uncles who served in WW2 beat the militaristic Japanese and Germans. As young Americans they grew up shooting .22's on "the farm" but got no formal military training. US troops showed more flexibility and personal initiative on the field than the Germans did. Their professional training made them more predictable and therefore did little good in actual combat. Their brainwashing did however make them fierce and confident. Boys will be boys...

USA and Britain did not even land in Normandy until almost 9 months AFTER the Soviet victory at Kursk. Following Kursk it was certain that the Red Army would win. USA and Britain just made sure we landed soon enough with enough firepower that the Soviets wouldn't take ALL of Europe. Why let Americans bleed when the Soviets were so willing. Soviets obviously could have beat Germany without us.

@randy95023 The German Professional training did them little good in actual combat. i guess that training had nothing to do with them having a 10 to 1 kill ratio on the eastern front. The Americans and Brits were the predictable ones. they would only advance after artillery, almost never infiltrated at night where as on the eastern front the germans would constantly have to counterattack with little or no arty and operated at night. Mass Material is why the US kicked ass and the Garand.
@ExecutiveErnst1 I agree. Further, total air superiority also contributes significantly. For much of the fighting on the western front post Normandy, the Allies had almost total air superiority. It wasn't the "myths" of Band of Brother type US soldiers that pushed back the German forces. Rather it was the Allied air forces who shot up anything that moved on the ground with almost impunity.
@greenbananas1 yeah other than the constant strafing attacks they much preferred the Western Front. if you think about the strain of wondering if your foxhole is gonna be infiltrated while your sleeping and getting your head bashed in or throat slit. that was every night on the Eastern front, on the Western Front they knew for the most part they should live through the night no problem.

It was the Germans who pioneered the concept of the strategic corporal ie their soldiers were trained to act higher than their worn rank when necessary and of having greater situational awareness of the battlefield and of the commanders "intent". They also pioneered the modern concept of the multi-armed "battle group".

It was some hundreds of years which Britain was just busy with looting the poor countries before WWII and thanks for Hitler who put an end to their golden age of looting. And on the other side Germany contributed to the development of some European and even middle eastern countries.

the book is called Steel Inferno by Michael Reynolds. goes into great detail about each day after D day and into all the engagements at each little town around Caen where the Canadians and Brits fought the 21st Panzer div and the 12th SS.
Has personal acounts from Unit war diaries from both sides. Excellent book i'd recommend it to anyone interested in how ferocious the battles were around Caen.
i just read an incredible book on the first ss panzer corps in normandy and the 12SS Hitler Youth Division was a first class division that was key in holding the area of Caen for 2 months against incredible odds.
But part of why they held for so long was the terrible tactics employed by the Brits and Canadians costing them so many more lives than the 12 SS division. the casualty rate on the Canadian, and Brits was incredble considering the mass amount of Airpower and Arty, Naval guns.

Yet if you really want to get technical about it, it was the Russians that bled the German Army dry on the Eastern Front. The war was lost even before the Americans put troops on the ground in the ETO. Once Germany hadn't beaten Russia within the first 6 months, probably less actually, they were never prepared for a long protracted war. America joining the fight just made it official

Ridiculous as it may be, it is what we are led to believe in our early education. The question wasn't intended to lead to a discussion on what country "won" the war. If you need clarification, the question was meant to satisfy my curiosity on what younger folks in other nations are led to believe, either through formal education, films, or word of mouth. In the US we tended to get less than the whole story in public school whether the subject was American history or world history.

Yes all people are the same. Sense of vengeance lives in each normal man (french, english. russian and so on). But i can tell that in Red Army it wasn.t system like in German army . It means that there was strict order to all comanders witch was made when red army went to german territory - don.t admit such things. There was strong punishment for such things to solgiers. As for amount of raped women i don.t agree with german side. In Berlin operation there were only 2000000 red army solgers.

Their inovations, technology and most of all.. their Comradery... some of these men fought from 1939 to the end.. Today US forces are in country.. what a year at a time?

You have to give the Germans credit where its due.. constant action or deployment since the late 1930's US men did not start engaging in mass until 1941 but really 1942. With that it shows you the might of the US at the time to only be in harms way for 3 years.. Industrial power was key.

The yankees were sitting it out selling weapons and making money till 1944 when the war was over and they didn't want USSR to gain control of the whole Germany. USSR have faced 3/4 of the German army and pushed them back to Berlin.T-34 is the most mass produced tank so far. Forget Pearl Harbour, the war was on the Eastern front. Even though it's not well reported in computer games and movies. We lost 48times men USA did.

Not every german soldier was a Nazi! The majority was only a poor front soldier who would have got killed if he had stopped fighting. At the same time russia and usa were at berlin germans were making jets already and bigger tanks if they used them they could win but they needed every german soilder to defend the father land witch means no tank drivers and no pilots to use them so that was kinda useless for them if you dont belive me search it up

There are some ignorant, nationalistic postings here. Russia had material help from the US, if they did not they would not have lasted, the fact that the germans got as far as they did proves this. No one army won this war, it was a concerted effort on the part of the major powers. But to make a point, this is brought to you on YouTube, an AMERICAN invention.

Hitler Youth? Nein. I was a Cub Scout in the 60's and was taught Rifle safety and firing by a WW1 Veteran who saw combat in the trenches. On the farm with my cousins we played "big" army and "little" army. Big army was when we were the soldiers. Little army was fought with the little green army men so popular back then. Continued- As far as "Hitler Youth" went my 6 uncles who served in WW2 beat the militaristic Japanese and Germans. As young Americans they grew up shooting .22's on "the farm" but got no formal military training. US troops showed more flexibility and personal initiative on the field than the Germans did. Their professional training made them more predictable and therefore did little good in actual combat. Their brainwashing did however make them fierce and confident. Boys will be boys...

@randy95023 Maybe the US troops won because the Germans were fighting 10 million Soviet soldiers at the same time and had been worn down by attrition after 4 years of fighting.

@jackzero99 Not only will I not argue with you, I will agree with you AND take it a step farther. USA and Britain did not even land in Normandy until almost 9 months AFTER the Soviet victory at Kursk. Following Kursk it was certain that the Red Army would win. USA and Britain just made sure we landed soon enough with enough firepower that the Soviets wouldn't take ALL of Europe. Why let Americans bleed when the Soviets were so willing. Soviets obviously could have beat Germany without us.

@randy95023 The German Professional training did them little good in actual combat. i guess that training had nothing to do with them having a 10 to 1 kill ratio on the eastern front. The Americans and Brits were the predictable ones. they would only advance after artillery, almost never infiltrated at night where as on the eastern front the germans would constantly have to counterattack with little or no arty and operated at night. Mass Material is why the US kicked ass and the Garand.

@ExecutiveErnst1 I agree. Further, total air superiority also contributes significantly. For much of the fighting on the western front post Normandy, the Allies had almost total air superiority. It wasn't the "myths" of Band of Brother type US soldiers that pushed back the German forces. Rather it was the Allied air forces who shot up anything that moved on the ground with almost impunity.

@greenbananas1 yeah other than the constant strafing attacks they much preferred the Western Front. if you think about the strain of wondering if your foxhole is gonna be infiltrated while your sleeping and getting your head bashed in or throat slit. that was every night on the Eastern front, on the Western Front they knew for the most part they should live through the night no problem.

@ExecutiveErnst1 I agree. I#m german and i shame for the cruel things my country did in the past. but if you say, the germans werent the best army, youre wrong. Hitlers troops dominated air ground and sea, especially at the beginning of the war. i dislike people who begin to say what assholes the "germans" in general were and are. Thats not correct, because the cruel things were told by gernerals and other higher ranked soldiers. But im not trying to say that it was great. I apologize!

@randy95023 Your believing a little of your own countries propoganda ie BS. American troops ARE NOT known for flexibility and personal initiative. To the contrary. It was the Germans who pioneered the concept of the strategic corporal ie their soldiers were trained to act higher than their worn rank when necessary and of having greater situational awareness of the battlefield and of the commanders "intent". They also pioneered the modern concept of the multi-armed "battle group".

If you check out the history of Churchill you will see that he was much worst than Hitler. In the history, losers of wars are called the devils and the winners are liberator.
It was some hundreds of years which Britain was just busy with looting the poor countries before WWII and thanks for Hitler who put an end to their golden age of looting. And on the other side Germany contributed to the development of some European and even middle eastern countries.

What you dont get is that WWII was caused by the greed and super Harsh punishment in regards to Germany, for going to an Allies aid in WWI.

the book is called Steel Inferno by Michael Reynolds. goes into great detail about each day after D day and into all the engagements at each little town around Caen where the Canadians and Brits fought the 21st Panzer div and the 12th SS.
Has personal acounts from Unit war diaries from both sides. Excellent book i'd recommend it to anyone interested in how ferocious the battles were around Caen.

i just read an incredible book on the first ss panzer corps in normandy and the 12SS Hitler Youth Division was a first class division that was key in holding the area of Caen for 2 months against incredible odds.
But part of why they held for so long was the terrible tactics employed by the Brits and Canadians costing them so many more lives than the 12 SS division. the casualty rate on the Canadian, and Brits was incredble considering the mass amount of Airpower and Arty, Naval guns.
