  • Interesting interview but I wouldn't really think of the Visual improvements as this was out in 2000; as of now this game is 12 years old. At the time the Visuals while dated by todays standards held up well in their day like a lot of classics :)

  • Continued: As for the people that think only a child could enjoy this game; they're sadly mistaken. For one thing the game is meant to be corny at times but at the same time it's a challenge in it's own right; especially the Northern Expansion; a child would not be able to complete this game especially by the time of Expert quests :)

  • So is this game like SpellForce where they have crossed RPG and RTS? I have SpellForce but not this game, Majesty.

  • Not quite the same thing. Try out the demo (link's in the description box).

  • @TableWolfMusic Spellforce is a good combination of RPG and RTS, but Majesty is a combination of RPG, RTS and SIM games. In addition to everything the review says here about the game you can keep playing a mission after you complete an objective just for fun. The AI will constantly do it's own thing in your heroes, and every map has constant enemy spawns that can even be set by you in a custom game. I've owned this game for like 12 years and building a city is the best part!

  • @Bobzach56 Reminds me a bit of the original Tropico (except the RPG bit). What platform are you playing this on? DOS box I assume?

  • Majesty is a Windows program, as is Spellforce.

  • @DWTerminator I haven't tried to run Spellforce in DOS. Maybe I should give that a go. As you said in the review Majesty is win95/98 and so I did a little googling and it seems one can run it in DOS. The reason I was curious is that playing a game under an alternative platform, like linux or a smartphone/tablet can be aided by use of DOS box. WINE on linux can be quite resource hungry. As for Windows compatibility modes (like running 64bit win7 etc) it can be easier to use DOS box.

  • Spellforce most likely won't run in DOS. It's a Windows XP program released in 2003/4. Win95/98 can sometimes run in DOS, yes, but in this case it's unlikely.

My advice with OS compatibility is generally that dual-boot will get the best results, despite taking up a lot of space.

  • @DWTerminator That can be a good way. A problem can be when one OS is no longer secure online & requires a physical disconnection from the internet & also when one is running a computer which has no available hardware drivers for an older OS. Virtual Machines, although resource hungry, can be a solution. It depends upon personal preference/needs. I find dual boot messy for my purposes if it requires multiple access to a drive's MBR. I've occasionally gone for removable HDD caddies.

  • Can you help me? How do I exactly get on multiplayer with my friend on Gold Edition?

We have hamachi but we can't see each other games, and when we click on internet it sends us to gamespy. Which then ask us for 10 dollars to download..

  • If you're using Hamachi then you should be going through the LAN ingame. Sorry, but I haven't managed to get Majesty's MP working more than once, and I can't remember what I did to get it to work.

  • @DWTerminator

    Tsk >.<

Okay, thanks anyway. We been using Hamachi and we have tried LAN, didn't really work for us. I have been trying to port forward, but no one actually have the ports for Majesty Northern Expansion. @.@

    Thanks anyway

  • Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

  • @DWTerminator

No it's okay, it's really my problem.

I like the video anyway, I bought the game because of this video. So you helped me enough,

  • I am playing this game on an i7 3.4GHz computer with Windows 7. The map scrolling on my computer is too fast - if I move my mouse to the edge of the screen, the map just zips immediately to its edge. I now use the minimap instead, but I have no way to scroll properly on the opening map with the challenges. How do you control the scroll speed for smooth scrolling? Also, is there a way to control the game speed?

  • In the options menu there's a thing to adjust scroll speed (and I believe game speed as well, but I'm not 100% sure on that).

  • @DWTerminator The options menu only helps you adjust the game speed, there is no option for scroll speed. But I found out how to adjust the scroll speed: Open regedit and go to the entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> CyberLore -> Majesty and look for the entry "ScrollSpeed". Set it to a lower value (I set it to 1), and all the scrolling is now fine.

  • I was thinking of buying this game and check a review, I load the page without noticing author and of course, there is a familiar voice. :)

  • I strike when you least expect it.

  • @DWTerminator Silent but deadly eh? :p

  • Something like that.

  • is it a combat rts game?

  • No.

  • I have a Mac, I've tried torrent Majesty (with the Northern Expansion if I could) several times but it just doesn't work. I tried to install SheepShaver to run it, I tried Boot Camp and other programs of that kind but I'm too technologically stupid to make it work. When I had my PC I had no problem torrenting and installing Majesty.

I miss this game so, so much

  • I had no idea you could rename units! I'm reinstalling my copy now. I wanna call everyone FUCKSHIT BEAR or something vulgar like that

  • lol child game? :D this is old skool hardcore...a child can't even make 1 expert mission by himself :P

  • Coming across as childish and being a children's game are two completely different things.

  • @Olerus Agreed. It's easy at first but later on boy does the difficulty really get in gear :)

  • no this game is friggin amazing

  • Cossacks is better

  • Total War games could never hold my attention for more than a week

  • Oh god, the nostalgia

  • One of my favorite games. Of all time.

  • I think, the largest problems I had with Majesty 2 were that whenever I would try to destroy a lair my heroes would run in and then flee because they saw a enemy. I would watch this for ten minutes until the enemies had enough forces to attack my base so my heroes could get enough levels to learn "Don't Shit Your Pants".

Oh, and the art design and voice acting just came upon as bland.

Decent review, although I disagree with the game being childish. Oh, and try to drop your "uh..."'s a bit.

  • Game's not really childish, I know, but it comes across as such.

Majesty 2's main problem is as you describe: the AI. The player's heroes are complete morons, while the enemies have but one directive: *Dalek voice* EXTERMINATE.

    Can't drop the "uh's" either.

  • I thought I would have a problem with The Siege that was until I ran into Legendary Heroes. I think that is the most frustrating level in the game because your heroes would be at like level 22 and run back scared at the sight of a Hellbear. WTF?

  • How did you record, mine lags really bad. I am using fraps

  • I was lucky and managed to get it to work with CamStudio. Normally that backfires on me.

  • @DWTerminator Thanks :D

  • No problem.

  • @DWTerminator You should review one of the cossacks games. Great rts's for their time

  • Don't have 'em.

  • lol northren expansion is lot harder

  • I wouldn't say it's a lot harder, but it's definitely got a bit more challenge to it.

  • This game was mega fun when I was 10

  • @ThePixieEater Yea I loved playing it back in the day.

  • GOD I LOVE THIS GAME

  • Guys I love this game(I have the gold edition)N I Like to be playing with u guys there is room for Hamachi is

    red:Majesty 1

    pass:Majesty

I Hope many people join us

  • holy crap I didn't know you can change their names LOL XD

  • Yep. They have to be at least level 10 in most cases though.

  • bought it off steam used to have the disk version many years ago, it crashes ALL the time tho

  • Wasn't aware Majesty 1 was on Steam to begin with... but yes, it crashes on newer systems annoyingly often.

  • @DWTerminator yea but only gold, its got the new ones on there too

  • @DWTerminator yea but only gold, its got the new ones on there too

and cheaper than you bought it!!!

  • Of course I bought it about 7 years ago... so it's really not that big a deal.

  • @TheAntman2006 dude, I found a way to ease up the crashes, just change the game's compatibility to 95 & it would run fine...though i've experience some minor lag, but I find that better than those freakin crashes

haven't tested 98 or 2000 yet, but I'm sure most old games are pretty much compatible with it

  • But I would definitely recommend this game. I don't think it's a game for kids anymore than other games are. This game doesn't take itself too seriously, and it's not afraid to poke fun at itself. I think that's a very mature thing to do versus other games that're too serious. So if you're an adult don't be afraid of trying it.

  • It's actually a tough game when you start making your own scenario's or if you play the higher difficulty quests. In fact, I couldn't do the toughest scenarios. The number 1 flaw I had with this game was once you I beat off the first dozen or so waves of monsters I had essentially won the game. There was nothing past that. And once you got a formula to win, it's pretty much game over for that scenario. It would have been nice if the pace had changed or been more dynamic in response to me.

  • You'd definitely hate Majesty 2 then. First off, there's no "random scenario generator" function anymore (you can still make scenarios, but it's all predetermined like in most RTS's). Second, the game's brutally difficult. Dunno why, really, but they decided to make you use level 1 heroes to fight off hordes of level 10 enemies... within around a minute of the scenario starting.

As for dynamic difficulty settings... I dunno. And yes, M1's tough in the endgame, but not before.

  • @DWTerminator ... The expansion for majesty 2 added a random scenario generator (someone said this). The second point you make about using level 1 heroes to beat off level 10 enemies is something you face in the toughest scenarios in majesty 1. My problem with it was that once I had beat off the first dozen waves I had won the game. The enemy never changed strategy. The attacks are too linear and predictable once you get on your feet.

These comments reflect my experience in majesty 1, not 2.

  • @gukonni ... I'm making a comment about my last reply to DWTerminator. It turns out that the expansion doesn't have a random scenario generator. It DOES have a map/scenario? editor. That's a negative in my view, but it still looks like a good game to me. I'll also admit here that I'm a proponent of non-linear gameplay so I really cannot judge a title that goes in the direction of plots and missions as opposed to randomly generated skirmish modes. I suppose that's because i like to design.

  • Majesty 2 has a scenario editor, yes, but not a random one. Yes, it's a negative, since the scenarios that come with it are pretty boring (I haven't looked for user-created ones, but given what's in the game I'm probably not going to).

As for Majesty 2's lv1 heroes problem... it's near the beginning of the game where you start fighting those lv10 enemies. The game's difficulty is just ridiculous compared to the first one, especially considering the heroes are weaker and their AI is worse.

  • 2:38 People need to realize that that was a pretty spot-on imitation. =D

  • Glad you think so. :)

  • I used to play this game when i was 12 =)

  • I wonder if it would work on my Mac OS X, I so wanna play this game again, I miss it, it was so great.

Is there a way I can download it? With uTorrent? Will it work?

    Awww man, so much memories!

  • There's a Mac port of it but I dunno if it'll work.

  • I wanna play people online but i dont know if other people even play online, if so, does anyone know how or where to play online?

    btw

    this games awesome :D

  • The online component should still work, but I don't think anyone still plays it online.

  • @1Questin1 I've played online b4 with a few people with gamespy arcade.

  • I just buyed brand new Majesty Gold Edition yesterday on ebay.

This game is so cool! And the review is really cool shows how you

are playing and you talking...... just NICE!

  • Glad you like it.

  • This game is fun. I purchased it on steam and it is a very unique rts game. I hope it works on windows 7 because i'm buying a new computer this month. Great review terminator!

  • Glad you liked it.

  • I think I requested this review ages ago, thanks for seeing it through!

Thing I love about Majesty is that it sums up all the fantasty cliches there is and exaggerates EVERY bits and pieces of them. Kinda like watching Monty Python's Holy Grail :)

  • I can't remember if you req'd it or not, but you're welcome if you did.

And yes, it's so cliched, but that's why it's so hilariously fun.

  • Sadly, Total War is a very unique RTS series.

I'll pick up RA2 when possible. I keep getting told it's the best C&C game of all time, so my expectations are probably a little higher than they should be.

  • I spent a lot of time playing this game, after a few years of playing it off an on every week or so I finally beat it a few months ago, was great but now I feel a little let down for some reason.

  • Well, it's probably because the game doesn't have as much replay value as others due to its unique style. If you're interested, Majesty 2 has a demo as well.

  • @DWTerminator Yea thats true, and yea I know theres a demo, but I am not really interested in Majesty 2, I don't think it really appeals to me for some reason, could be because the first 1 was great and I am worried this one won' t live up to it.

  • It really doesn't live up to the same feel, but the game itself actually isn't too bad.

  • That's ironically the only RA game I haven't played yet.

  • All of the Stronghold games are deceptively great despite being weak in the visual department, though I'd say Crusader is probably the best one. As for Majesty, it's nothing like any of the games you've mentioned, though.

  • LoL i posted have you played The TW series, right before you mention it, any way, have you played any good mods for Empire or Napoelon, Sya darthmod, imperial splendour? theres heaps but those are musts for empire!

  • I've played Medieval 2, Rome, Empire, and Napoleon, but only own Medieval 2 & Kingdoms. Didn't really like Napoleon nor Empire, but that's based on my experiences with the demos. Rome would probably have been more entertaining were I to have had a good PC when I played it.

As for mods, I haven't really looked at many apart from Third Age - Total War, which is awesome.

  • I luv your reviews, also have you ever tried the TW series, they have some really good mods!

  • Ive had this game for years

    The memories :)

  • Interesting that you posted it this, I was looking up this game literally last week, it looks fun

  • Odd how that worked out, eh? It's not a particularly deep game, but it's fun if you want some short-term, rather silly diversion every now and then.

  • @DWTerminator Hmmm, I might look at the demo... When I was looking at it a while ago it looked like a fairly complex and quirky fantasy game, it's a shame it seems to be so shallow.

  • Go for it. It's worth checking out at least.

  • reminds me of "the settlers 2" just less well thought out. but i never heared about it

  • Well, they released a sequel last year, and it's more of an "underground" title than anything else. Not surprised you haven't heard of it. There's a demo for each game online so you should be able to check both out fairly easily (though the second game isn't all that great comparatively).

  • @DWTerminator

last year Oo damn. i thought its from the mid 90s because thats how it looks like lol

i think i rather play settlers 2. the remake from 2006 is really good

  • Well, I put a link to the demo in the description box, so you can at least try that out if you're still interested.

  • @DWTerminator

i give it a try after i finished my campaign with the greeks in total war rome. you cant lost with hoplites lol especially not if you have to defend a city

  • dw have you played xcom? i hear there making a new game for the series

  • No, I haven't, sadly. I'll see about getting a copy though.

  • a friend and I started playing this yeas ago and loved it. I think what made it fun was actually working out how to play the thing, not having done the tutorial, but as you say once u get the hang of it that kinda dies away.

  • Yeah, it's fun for short periods of time, which isn't a bad thing, but it gets repetitive.

  • looks pretty cool

  • Check out the demo. I'll post a link in the description box.

  • @DWTerminator thx alot amigo

  • No problem.

  • New mic? It sounds better :D

  • No, actually. I just put it on over my other headphones so it doesn't rattle everywhere.
