Thank you very much for showing comparative scores in the video. In most cases I don't go to the O3D review so it helps a lot to see at least some comparison in the video itself.
they had two different reference coolers for the 4770 too, all the reviewers got the expensive reference cooler but all the AIBs used the cheap reference cooler
The 7950 is about £100 more expensive than the MSI 6970 Lightning (about 38% more expensive), but only performs about 22% better than it. At this point in time, I don't think it's a good option to buy one of these cards, because AMD is exploiting their leader position as much as they can through price skimming. When Nvidia launches their 28nm cards(soon), we will get to see the competition and we'll have lower prices...
Just bought a 7970 and I love it. OCed it out of the box to max Catalyst settings and getting P8932 on 3Dmark 11 with a i7-930@3.5GHz. These are shaping up to be a great cheaper option.
My 6950 crossfire overclocked is almost equal to a single 7950. This new range of AMD cards id offering massive increases in performance for a single card solution. With cooler temps, less power consumption, a quieter and more efficient cooler, these cards are a great step forward for gamers. Hopefully AMD can get their asses into gear with driver support because they hamper the performance of the 6000 series considerably
This sounds pretty quiet... I'm not a big gamer, more a fan of hardware and stuff, really excited to see what happens with the 7850/7870 (assuming those are the numbers used, but you know what I'm talking about...) 'Cause for my needs a 6850 more than suffices, I'm hoping I'll be able to get one of the cheaper cards of this generation and keep it dead quiet.
Great review mate. Thanks. I agree at it's release price of £350 it's not that at all. Direct competition at this moment is with a 1.5GB GTX580. The extra VRAM and overclocking ability makes it a pretty reasonable. Would have been great to see these close to £300, would really have made NVIDIA sweat. Will be interesting to see how NVIDIA respond with Kepler performance and pricing.
These cards, the reference 7950 vs.HIS 7950 with the centered fan cooler. reminds me of the refrence GTX 570 vs. the EVGA GTX 570 HD. Just like this the 570 HD looks like it could be a refrence card but it isn't and it is quieter than the refrence cooler as well.
hey tom ..i found that the card from HIS is the reference one and the one that you've been sent from amd is a scale down version from the 7970...i've seen 3 brands using the fan design the HIS used ... the other 2 are MSI and POWERCOLOR...
once again - thank you for great review. this gpu looks pure sexy, but i wonder if it worth the trouble of selling my Asus directCU gtx570 and getting one of these babies!
@TimeToLiveCustoms my speakers fked up, so could you please tell me how much does this card cost? I am thinking about getting one or even two so would be very glad if you could tell me :D
@TimeToLiveCustoms , I just read that AMD will NOT be producing "Reference" 7950's ,You are right that they were mocked up one up with 7970 parts, AMD is letting partners do whatever they want to on the 7950.
YES! Thank you Tom for comparing the benchmark scores with other cards both stock and OCed. Ive been wanting you to do this for some time now. Any word when the new Nvidia cards will be making an appearance?
@antistatic12 i asked HOW necessary it is. not WHY its necessary. I just didnt know if 1.5Gb would be a bottleneck, and if it was a bottleneck, how it would be necessary. but, thanks anyways
@callmesmorz Well his Crysis benchmark was using near 1.8GB, and that's only at 1080p, if you have higher resolutions or multiple monitors, it will use more. If you have a single 1080p monitor or less, the 1.5GB version would be fine for you.
@OfficeHopscotch thanks man, i appreciate it. another question, though: the card only has 1.5 GB and crysis 2 was using 1.8; once it hits that 1.5Gb ceiling, what exactly happens? does performance drop significantly, or does it stutter/freeze? again, thank you.
@callmesmorz The frame rate will start to suffer, but he has the game maxed out, and AF uses a lot of memory, if you just lower the AF to 4x or 8x, you shouldn't run into a problem with the memory.

Still too expensive. $470-500 on Newegg. Around same price as GTX 580 so no need for Nvidia to lower prices.
