I love this song! How can I have heard it today for the first time?!I'm a 16 years old italian singer songwriter (I sing and write in english too!) please watch my videos and if u like me comment subscribe and rate thanks <3!
I thoroughly enjoyed absolutely every lyric in this song. Just bless you Petula Clark for saying it all to the ones that truly believe in love. A very special thank you my true love who dedicated it to me. You are a treasure for a lifetime! .... And there is absolutely nothing in this world that can ever change my love for you....ILU♥
To all you Carolina Hurricanes fans out there (like myself): This was the #1 song in the USA when new coach Kirk Muller came into the world (February 8, 1966).
I remember as a young teen in the mid sixties how this woman stole my heart....Boy was I smitten! She captured and embodied the optimism and hope we all felt. Those wre halcyon days
@erictyrsson You got that right! This was music! My 13 year old daughter like myself gets in the oldies.I don't get into the music like they have now.
@erictyrsson - I'm 61 years old and here to say that there was plenty of "bad messages" in music in the 60s too. There's plenty of music today with different messages. Distorting the past is never a good message.
The photo is from her pop music career in Britain in the early 1960s, before she had crossed the pond and launched her American pop career with "Downtown" in April 1965.
MrJeff1947, just let us know when that will be, and we will oblige - too bad you haven't listened to her other positive songs, to want to stay among us longer .
The first time I heard this song I turned it off. My then-GF turned it back on. I turned it off again; she turned it back on again. I gave up and listened, and by the end of the song I was humming along. It's just an incredibly catchy tune. :D
When Petula Clark first came on the music scene in the US in the 60's I had the biggest crush on her. I thought she was beautiful and loved all her music. After all these years I still get a nostalgic feeling for her music and those times.
Not surprising, really...carp is not at all a good eating fish!
My apologies, I couldn't resist that. You may take offence if you wish, or see the funny side of an unintentional slip of the typing finger...but at least I share your appreciation of Petula Clark!
Sweet straightforward lyrics+very catchy tune+brilliant vocal performance = #1 hit. Petula Clark initially dislikes the song (perhaps thinks it is simplistic?) but probably realizes that it is too likeable to be clouded by any cynicism. Probably also realizes that its straightforward joyous style holds a subtly powerful message for its audience. Performs it with great conviction over and over again for 40+ years and consoles millions of people. Not a bad life!
I had forgot all about her how lovely to hear her voice again music I would hear as a child and things seem so much easy then, so now I could more music to listen to that I can understang now that is a age thing thank you for putting this up.
I was only in third grade when this song first came out. I love some of her songs. I prefer the music of the 60's; the decade of my childhood, than all of this junk that's out today.

XD... we all love Pet and I'm 67, I was 20 when I began listening to her. Her songs just lift you off your feet and put heart and soul into your life. May I suggest working a little on your language... that's not really the best way to express your admiration... I know it's how it is these days and my language made my parents cringe... I hope you will see that there are better and more impressive ways to express yourself! And, NO, you are not the only 1!
I remember all these songs when i was a kid, i always considered myself so lucky to have enjoyed and lived in an era of music that we will never see again!!!!!
My sympathy at your tragic loss. Too bad your father couldn''t hear this joyful song! He must have been very depressed and without hope. God will judge him most leniently! He's O.K.
This song was popular the year my Dad took his life. Was always scared when it came on the radio back in 1966. Really hearing it for the 1st time tonight. The word's to it are beautiful!!!!!

@yunova you really want to throw down? Think about it, I've been alive for 4 years longer than you. Ive seen her in concert, i have watched every movie she was in. i have sung every song shes sung. Do you really want to throw down? I thought not.
@whales098 Check out Mary Hopkins who is from the same era, or Lesley Gore. You will love how "progressive" Lesley was for that era. Especially on the songYou Don't Own Me.
@whales098 Cool! You have an ear for good music. Now, don't expose your ignorance and lack of class as well by using the "F" word. You're 13 years old. If you want to use it among your friends in private, go ahead but that's one of those seemingly small things that will add up to you being a "no-class low life" when you're an adult. Lift yourself above the crowd and start speaking and carrying yourself correctly in public.

@whales098 I love the music from the '60s and '70s!! Everything on my ipod is oldies! I've been into sixties since I was 12 years old. Now im 16. Greatest music out there!
at your age, it only shows that you have a genuine taste for good music, real music...and you have an ear for real talent! congrats and continue to enjoy Petula's legacy....
Of course I love it, but I don't get why this song topped the charts in early '66. It feels recherche, more like #1 in '64... but as Pet sings, it "shows how wrong we all can be."
BEST SONG EVER !! Well, for my time and especially when you are already enjoying the day !!! It just added a touch of happy day to the end of my mine ! !
I remember eating Quisp breakfast cereal listening to this song playing from my mom's kitchen radio before going off to school. Makes me smile...simple times.
@mkl62 I remember that guy. He was as tough as nails! I've never been a Dallas (Cowboys) fan, but I do remember him. Still, he wasn't as as tough as Walt Garrison. But then, who the hell was--or is? That dude rocked. Period.
@Rigmeister9 Moose's birthday is February 10, 1966. It is interesting to see where we were as a country and world then compared to today. That is why I like doing this. I was 3 and a half years old at the time. The US was in Vietnam and the civil rights movement was in full swing. At my church, we were welcoming a new pastor because he was pretty much forced out of his former church due to his stance on the Civil Rights Movement.
When I was very young there are just a View songs and this is one of them I remember well.I had to find this song and play it again. There are alot of songs Petula Clark did that I remember well.
memories evoked by this song are deeper than the deepest ocean. I had heard this song in 1960 when i was a student in Arbroath, Scotland. today in August 2010, I am living 1960 once again by listening to this song again.... all the memories...all the people...all the fun comes back rushing with a small tear for tribute. Thanks Petula Clark...thanks every one. I am in India now since 1961.

Late 1965. Holy cow 45 years ago. Why does it seem like forever ago and yet just like yesterday? Man I'm getting old.

This is such a happy, lovely song. Brings back childhood memories.

Of course I love it, but I don't get why this song topped the charts in early '66. It feels recherche, more like #1 in '64... but as Pet sings, it "shows how wrong we all can be."
Still...it sounds l'64, not '66.

This was the #1 song in the USA when Daryl "Moose" Johnston came into the world. He played for the Dallas Cowboys and is now a sportscaster for FOX.
mkl62 1 year ago
@mkl62 I remember that guy. He was as tough as nails! I've never been a Dallas (Cowboys) fan, but I do remember him. Still, he wasn't as as tough as Walt Garrison. But then, who the hell was--or is? That dude rocked. Period.
Rigmeister9 1 year ago
@Rigmeister9 Moose's birthday is February 10, 1966. It is interesting to see where we were as a country and world then compared to today. That is why I like doing this. I was 3 and a half years old at the time. The US was in Vietnam and the civil rights movement was in full swing. At my church, we were welcoming a new pastor because he was pretty much forced out of his former church due to his stance on the Civil Rights Movement.

memories evoked by this song are deeper than the deepest ocean.
