I learned to play saxophone from the passage at 7:00. Also learned about life in the USA. Been hearing this since early '72. Never knew there was video!
Still such contemporary lyrics. These guys had incredible talent.
I first heard this song playing in a record store in Harvard Square (MA) in 1972 and immediately bought the record. It was on Atlantic Records under their classice green and red record label.
@take942 27 years old and the first time I heard it was probably in my brother's van a few years back, which is always awesome, but, gotta say, I'm so jealous of your first time hearing it!
Tell Jamie Foxx that it's all been done before. Les not only did most of his musical game, but did it with a real context-true motivation, a sprinkle of courage within.
@sling3shot IMHO the lyrics & the music are timeless, the lyrics are just as relevant if not more so today. I saw Les McCann perform twice in Detroit around 1974/1975 at Bakers Keyboard Lounge & he was amazing. Bakers is a small place & I remember the first time we went we paid $10 and stayed for both sets however the 2nd time we went we paid $10 but if you wanted to see the 2nd set you had to pay another $10, of course we forked over another $10 for the 2nd set.
I love this so much. I have to hear it every so often, but I like watching everyone. Benny Bailey seems to know they're all in the zone by the look on his face. I am following Les McCann on Twitter, and one of his tweets says, "Sock it to me." Haha. I thought that was pretty cool.
Groovin' seriously hard. This is an album everyone should own or hand to the friend that says they don't like jazz to prove them nothing short of wrong.
i wanna see fuck heads like kanya west or lil penis (i meant wayne) try just try and have the balls to come up with something this touching and political. they won't cause of master computer big brother regulator fake ass americas (got) talent shit face nation of prozac gobblin limp dicked mascots of global greed

@militarytrumpet His name was Benny Bailey. Here is what it says on the back of the album cover (just the part with Benny in it) "The great American trumpet player, Benny Bailey, who has been living in Europe for several years, was also at Montreux, and he was asked by Eddie and Les to join them in the impromptu jazz concert which can be heard on this album."
HEARS THE KICKER,BABY! THIS WAS PUT TOGETHER IN MINUTES. THEY NEVER PLAYED WITH EACH OTHER IN A GROUP BEFORE. in my eyes and ears 1 of JAZZ (if not the GREATEST) LIVE JAM SESSIONS EVER! "COMPARED TO WHAT" 40+ years later is still saying "GOD DAMMIT". think about it!
Great song!!! R.I.P. to Gene McDaniels, the songwriter of this song who passed away today (7/29/11). Yes, he is the same person who sung "A Hundred Pounds of Clay" back in 1961.
@cutelittlecaramelkid A dj on wfmu said his mother wouldnt let him buy 100 lbs of clay because dorothy killgalen said it was sacreligeous then dorothy killgalen died of drugs and alcohol like maryln monroe
More cowbell.. No, honestly, where are Les' older recordings? Like 1960 where he plays in trio in san francisco with Leroy Vinnegar on bass, tunes like: "Big John" Les was playing his ass off back then..
@FunkMan53 those are the les mcann ltd. ones you dont see around anymore there was an article in esquire magazazine which of theses guys is a black panther with les in the picture it was some kind of put on he wasnt in the black panthers john mehegan had 3 series of jazz piano books one he gets into how to play funky chord patterns in the style of les mcann
@FunkMan53 in earlier volumnes mehegan has you playing more complex chords in the left hand with 9th 11th and 13th aproximating the sound of a big band in later volumnes you learn modal harmonies of herbie hancock and bill evans mehegan makes grandiose verbal statements like the diatonic system has been exahusted by stan kenton
@FunkMan53 this was in the real book but just the melody and chord symbols if you want to get les mccans locked hand chord voicings you will have to figure them out by ear

here we go people, "COMPARED TO WHAT" is the most social conscience songs. In 1969 as it is NOW IN 2011. Please dig it as much as U should HEAR THE GOSPEL. EASILY 1 OF GREATEST JAZZ/SERMONS of ALL TIMES. 1 of the coolest the hooks of this track.outside the slight "Linus and Lucy" ala monk kick in the beginning. how Mr.McCann uses the hip slang between each verse. WHAT LOST ART. this 1 track that never GETS OLD. I COULD LISTEN TO IT OVER AND OVER. U SHOULD AS WELL. go get the video,DVD PLEASE!
Wow wow wow thanks for posting this. Like others I had no idea this even existed. What an amazing trip to be able to watch these guys create such magic!!
It took a polished group of African American jazz musicians to teach the Swiss what timing is all about. I bought this album because it was the only LP in the jazz section of a small El Paso record shop in the early 70's.For days after I first heard it, CTW was all I could talk about. I felt like an evangelist. Everyone who would come over I made listen to it. I have never tired of it.
@montebanque : Yes, but give credit, it took the swiss and Europe in general to take the initiative to put on and film these concerts because the US media were and still are completely terrible at understanding this was history in the making.... witness the amount of recorded video of US artists on youtube from Europe in 60s and 70s.
Amazing. The sad thing is that if I hadn't heard Maya Rudolph sing this as part of a Saturday Night Live sketch, I would never have looked up the song.
My gosh. So much lost to history to so many people. This song and performance needs to be remembered.
i remember the first time i heard this, i was 15 and it opened the door to jazz for me... what a fantastic song and with meaning!! that album was my first jazz album !
Swiss Movement, one of my favorite albums - If I had a desert island list, this would likely be on it. This is probably the most upbeat/rocking cut on the album, but entire album is great. Excellent chemistry and I don't believe this was rehearsed prior to the set, though Leroy Vinnegar has frequently played bass with Les. They just found a groove and away it went.
Les McCann (piano, vocals); Eddie Harris (tenor saxophone); Benny Bailey (trumpet); Leroy Vinnegar (bass); Donald Dean (drums).
Cmon people, I've liked the McCann/Harris thing since the early 70's when I first heard it and about wore out the album, and yes it's great. But that Legend with the Roots band live thing is really good too--not much comparison except for the same song. Such different treatments, types of band, etc. Enjoy them both!
This is the real deal. Les McCann and company. Groove that is thick. Eddie Harris making me believe! Trumpet man? I know his style, but can't place him. Awesome!
IIRC, that's Leroy Vinegar, and it"s still an absolute blast to hear him--hell, it's an absolute blast to hear all of them. I've still got the vinyl of this somewhere, though only God knows its exact location. Try "Cold Duck Time" from "Swiss Movement" for more Vinegar. Hope this helps--Ralph
Well, upon further research, it looks like I was completely wrong about the man playing the trumpet--sorry. Time has some interesting effects upon one's memory, perhaps. I should have given you the name of Benny Bailey on the trumpet. mY Apologies, again.
man from 1969 to today not mach has changed from what hes singing at 3:44

here we go people, "COMPARED TO WHAT" is the most social conscience songs.

@montebanque
quite right, very well stated

@montebanque : Yes, but give credit, it took the swiss and Europe in general to take the initiative to put on and film these concerts because the US media were and still are completely terrible at understanding this was history in the making.... witness the amount of recorded video of US artists on youtube from Europe in 60s and 70s.

@montebanque Same here! My uncle gave me all his LPs to convert them to MP3, and Swiss Movement was in there....I play CTW for everyone!

@montebanque For good reason my friend. my dad & Mom brought this home & I was a boy when I first heard it.
It is one of the pures expressions of music I have heard up, to this day. Thanks Mom & Dad.

What year was that? I first heard this in 1972, my roommate (who later became my husband) had this album.

Amazing. The sad thing is that if I hadn't heard Maya Rudolph sing this as part of a Saturday Night Live sketch, I would never have looked up the song.
My gosh. So much lost to history to so many people. This song and performance needs to be remembered.

How the hell could anyone 'dislike' this? One person is compared to what a dick hiding in a man-sized safe after shooting a judge in the face...

Every beat, every note is loaded with soul. I love the way Eddie Harris plays especially.

Yeah, J.leg and the Roots did a good cover, but they were "trying to make it real"...........this is REAL.
