  • In the Med, if you are willing to put up with some potential heavy pitching in the Bay of Biscay, then you will have a great time. To describe the sensation of heavy pitching, to some it may feel that you are infact on an elevator whilst the blood in your neck and head is forced downward. It feels strange at first, but after a little while you should feel better. Sea sickness tablets are always available and if you still feel a little green, go lie on your bed, on your side and relax.

  • would not want to be on that !

  • Love that shit right there! Leaving for another cruise in a few weeks.

  • Ah indeed, what a fine soft day's sailing aboard the Dizzy Magic Bruise Ship!

  • i was on that when this happend

  • if you think of it it doesnt matter how big the ship is, compared to the ocean its just a spec.

  • Why would they go to sea? Really? Ships have sailed the Atlantic long before they got anywhere near this big---remember the dinkies that Columbus sailed about? The bridge on the Queen Mary is about 90' above the water and regularly took "green water" in winter storms on the TransAt. In 1937, Paul Gallico was in first class when a series of waves left the Queen in a perilous list, an event that would inspire his book, and the movie from it: The Poseidon Adventure.

  • @Gryphonalia We understood that the forecast was that the weather would be south of our route, but the Med is notorious for being a bit unpredictable.

  • I wonder if because of how it is sort of rounded off on the back if that reduces the leaning back and forth instead of the flat-backed ships where they have nothing to support. And maybe because of her long bow the water has to hit it just right to make a loud crash noise like it did at one point. Disney thought of everything when designing this ship for a hurricane!

  • The ship's skipper had her pointed at an angle to the oncoming waves - the safest way to take heavy seas. Taking waves head on actually damages the ship more than at the 30 degree angle he had the MV "Magic" at. It's still a tough ride for folks not used to such gyrations

    .

  • Storm force 10?.. Not really..because sea storms are classified from 1-6 by strength. So this Force 10 is simply impossible to happen. This was maybe 4 or 5...I was working on a cruise ship and several times we were in a storm..at strength 2 was already quite exciting...so don't be afraid to much by this video, cruises are beautiful..

  • @Searayist The Beaufort Scale is used at sea to classify wind strength : Force 9 41-47knots,Strong Gale,High waves (23-32 ft), sea begins to roll, dense streaks of foam, spray may reduce visibility.

Force 10 48-55kts Storm, Very high waves (29-41 ft)

Force11,56-63kts Violent Storm, Exceptionally high (37-52 ft) waves, visibility more reduced.

Force12, 64+kts, Hurricane, Air filled with foam, waves over 45 ft, sea completely white with driving spray, visibility greatly reduced

  • Think i would of been puking. I love my cruises but that kind of weather would of got to me in a heart beat and i would have stuck my head under a pillow and stayed there till it was over.

  • I've been on that ship like 20 times!

  • That's Disney Magic for you!

  • This is why I will never step on a Cruise ship. Not a vacation to me...

  • This ship is rocking in this storm! i actually was on the disney dream when the Bahamas got hit by hurricane Irene... the first night everyone was so sick and you couldn't even walk straight. But the next day the sun was shining the seas were calm it was a beautiful day for my wedding day!

  • Talk about a storm. Glad it didn't end up like the Poseidon.

  • Oh its a magic cruise alright. Someone must been watching Fantasia.

  • looks awesome...would have loved to be there...i would lit up my joint and got drunk.

  • I've been there lol except the night before I got drunk in the casino. Being hungover off Southern Comfort + 25ft waves = very sick

  • the waves at the beginning are really long-and the ship is hitting them at an angle of what looks like 45 degrees-it must have been very uncomfortable for those who get motion-sick-and your comment of playing video games--ugh, the giddifying effects would be horrible with a pitching ship.We crossed channel in a tiny ship and oh boy-she was a famous roller in bad weather according to her crew. Was very glad to get off. [Falaise] my roughest journey ever ! 5hrs only though.

  • I would throooow up, omg, im getting sick just looking at the video

  • Very nice video...great shots. The first time I experienced seas like this was when we crossed the Atlantic...the North Sea's reputation is an accurate one. Regarding the Med...we hit weather similar to this as well. The Med can be very...tempermental. Again, great video, thanks for posting.

  • Interesting, I dont think I've ever seen a rotating radar on the bow like that. I wonder what specific purpuos that unit serves? Back-up, Main, etc...?

  • You heard the BANG at 1:45 so loud from Deck 9, I don't even wanna imagine what the people must have thought that were in their state rooms near in the bottom decks.

  • Ahh.. even the parents had fun on this cruise!! Thanks for the upload. :)

  • LOL the doors are barricaded for some reason???LOLOLOL

  • I think I had the most fun on my trip to mexico on the Disney wonder. The wind was like you were experiencing: the ship was rocking back and forth. The best part was that we would open doors when people came walking by and it would freak them out! :P

  • Great storm cruise video...you did what I would have done, document the event. Thanks!

  • So yeah Ive never been on a cruise ship in heavy seas, does it feel like turbulence on a plane? Or not that bad?

  • Ususally they have people inside their cabins. This overall helps to distribute weight evenly and in most cases keeps the center of gravity of the vessel lower giving it more stabilization. These ships can take quite alot, and technology has helped out tremendously. Force 10 winds can come out of a storm with only 1-2hrs of developement. Thanks to captain & crew training everyone should remain safe.

  • wow looks like fun with a lot of thrill lol

  • I was on a cruise (Oasis of the Seas) where there was 5 degree roll. I had a strong stomach but most people didnt. it was scary.

  • @rocheINC The biggest ship IN THE WORLD at a 5 DEGREE ROLL!L!!?>!?!?!?!?!?!?!!

  • @conwilcon967 its a pretty small ship

  • @freshicedcoke but its the biggest cruise ship on earth ....

  • @conwilcon967 there are many that are bigger like alllure of the seas its the largest cruise ship int eh worl

  • It wasn't the rolling, it was the pitching that was getting to people. Felt like a fast elevator going up and down near the bow. But we were heeling pretty good. (that was due to the direction of the wind). There were TONs of seasick people, including even some of the crew :(

  • @ShawnLara can you describe it more

  • Id say 2 degrees of roll. On my last cruise (enchantment of the seas bermuda) we were rolling a little and passengers thought it was horibble when it was only not even 1 degree of roll. Did you get seasick at all? :)

  • Why would they even set sail with a weather like this!!! they have radars so they had to know that something was coming.

  • @chikenarch We were already at sea? The forecast was a little off? Those things happen.

  • @chikenarch your stupid

  • @rmcurtiss

    and you're an idiot

  • Hey I am just wondering how did you get outside? and what happens when a bad storm comes do they make u stay in your cabin?

  • @acircusmidget7 I'm sure it depends on the ship. Most people stayed in (room service & housecleaning got a serious workout). Upstairs was closed outside, but a few people were decidedly green in the gills and camped outside in the fresh air with their "bag". (Note: the arcade is also past there. If you have the opportunity to play driving games in a storm think twice. I didn't feel it much before that, but with the video of the game it caught my attention!)

  • @ShawnLara haha thanks for answering going on Royal Caribbean Freedom of the Seas today

  • this is surreal! glad you survived.

  • @TVBartSki That wasn't in much doubt, but thanks :)

  • I'm on the disney magic right now heading to la spezia italy.

  • The doors are barrakded for some reason..

  • @Sillysore Everyone knows that zombies attack during heavy storms

  • i went on the same cruise last year around late august and the first day at sea was so bad that we lost power

  • Kind of Scary

  • @sjpictures I'm not the captain :) However there're lots of factors. Side to the waves would be worse. Waves get worse with wind speed "fetch", which is the distance the wind blows over water. The way the storm was blowing , the captain changed course to get to calmer water ASAP. Basically to get closer to the land that the storm was blowing from. Unfortunately that was a long ways away, so it took a few hours.

  • @ShawnLara YOU WENT UP AND DOWN but i went side to side in winter bit scary

  • @ShawnLara bro just saying if u go side on into those waves it might not turn out very good 4 u... if u get me

  • I'm surprised the vessel is sailing diagonal to the waves. any suggestions as to why that might be. I'd have thought it would accentuate the rolling of the ship.

  • OMG

  • What a waste of money. A storm ruined the vacation.

  • @JasonMovieGuy Hardly a waste, we had tons of fun, and that was only one day.

  • Not normally :)

  • Valleys of the Pyrennees channel gales from the Bay of Biscay to this region, known as Golfe de Lyons. Weather conditions can deteriorate very quickly there.

  • Cruising is the safest way to travel.....dont sail if you dont like the ocean.

Some people complain too much.....I love weather and would love this 1 day of the cruise......its free entertainment!

  • Woah...... 1:55

  • I would get so sea sick at 1:24 where the boat is going up nad down

  • Im working on a cruise ship for 2 years now and trust me! This is nothing!! small waves ;)

  • Disney ship.

Captain's voice on loud speaker............'Attention Peter Pan and Wendy too, go to dining room and clean up Winnie's Pooh."

  • well that sure explains how you were outsite looking steady lol i agree its hard to guage from the vid i have 11 years experiance on boats yachts and ships in stormy weather wait till you have a 12 thats not so fun i can tell ya talk about a bit clenched and theres no mistaking that kind of force lmao thanks for the reply i see your point. ;-)

  • i agree thats not a ten but certanly getting that was its more a 8 close to going on a nine if it were a 10 then you would not be standing out there as easely as you were great fun tho :) good vid

  • @keithdchild Storms/waves are really hard to film, you might take a closer look. I had to sit in places. Also it was waning some when I took the video. Note the heel of the ship due to wind. I was quoting the captain, who I'm guessing mostly picked the force on wind speed, but would pick a 9 anyway. It's hard to measure the wave heights from the video, but I think they fit at least 9 (23 feet). Crests broke more earlier.

  • id say thats force 10 if not pretty damn close remember how big a ship that is as well

  • Just quoting the captain. Didn't quite seem to match some of the requirements, but idd others

  • Not force ten.

  • omg! i am going to one in the mediterianian thus summerr!

  • xaxaxaxaxaxax it is force 8!!!!!!! :pp i met this ship in barcelona beautiful ship

  • Love the video. This cruise must have sucked bollocks. I would love to have dinner during this storm so I could hurl my daffy duck onto some female patron's cleavage.

  • Need to apply some Rain-X at 2:00

  • Thats a tough gadget that stands firm in the storm! Cool!

  • also these ships are made to withstand far worst e weather than this :)

  • guys this doesnt happen all the time on cruises, i go on atkeast 1 every summer and ive never had this happen to me. and u guys werent in any danger

  • @terrusaet I tried to make that clear, the ship can handle worse than this. Mostly I found it interesting more than anything.

  • I hope I get one day like this in the caribbean this winter. I'm going there for the first time on the Norwegian Epic. First time to the U.S too. Miami 2 days prior to the cruise. It's gonna be OFF THE HOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Let me tell you something. I was on that ship, it's amazingly seaworthy. Don't worry either the captain isn't Greek...hahahaha But seriously, Disney doesn't want bad press, there ships are really safe. We went through some bad shit too.

  • Has there been any Disney Cruise shipwrecks?

  • @Myworld1916 Not even close, their ships are well built. This ship could have handled much worse weather.

  • @Myworld1916 None :)

  • This is the sea that makes me feel free...... :)

  • I think Donald just blew past the camera.

  • This can't be good... How did you feel when you were in the storm in the rocking boat?

  • man thatd be fucking awesome! i wanna go on a cruise so badly just so i can be in a storm like that!

  • this was uploaded on my birthday

  • gulf of leon

  • sea sick much?

  • oh great... i go on a cruise this spring break

  • @TomTom40202 :)

  • @TomTom40202 Yha, Hahaha

  • @TomTom40202 so am i!! i might go to disneydream

  • @TomTom40202 ...well...good luck with that...

  • at 1:14 where ur filming out the front of the ship. when buying a cruise what room section is that? because that is suchg an awesome view

  • @beaum1cah That's the Gym. I'm sitting on a treadmill. I was sort of wondering if I should be sitting in a room with a bunch of heavy exercize equipment in it in those kinds of seas :)

  • @ShawnLara OHH ok i thought u cud get a room up there. ahahhahaha ya all the wieghts and heavy equipment slideing around wudve been fun to dodge

  • @beaum1cah some cruise lines do have rooms at that section. Royal Caribbean has family oceanview staterooms; i know on Oasis/Allure of the Seas and Freedom/Liberty/Independece of the seas have those...

  • I know exaclty where you were! You were crossing the Gulf of Lions. It's notorious for sudden fierce stoms from air being funneled down from the Alps. Went through a force 12 storm there as we sailed from Toulon France to Barcelona on the Navigator of the Seas on the night of Oct 24, 2010. It was awesome, unfortunately none of my video came out, too dark to see anything. The captain told us the next day that winds peaked around 140kmh or 90mph. Great video.!

  • My cruise in Alaska was like this.

  • at 1:02 creepy EVP

  • That's kinda like what the waves were like on the Sovereign of the Seas! It was hard to walk out side to get to the bathroom from Johnny Rockets. Lol!

  • it's all part of the adventure of cruising, lol.

  • if i were you id help out and counter-balance the boat by running to opposite ends. its the least you can do really..

  • That area is called the Bay of Biscay. It is not uncommon to encounter heavy seas around the area. A few years back, when the Canberra was still in service,we sailed through similar weather. I enjoyed it but its not for everyone.

  • @77gerald77 sorry, but that's incorrect. it's called the Gulf of Lions. Bay of Biscay is on the Atlantic side of France, this in the Med. just went through it a month ago sailing from Toulon France to Barcelona with a force 12 storm. truly awesome.

  • wow, wowow

  • WAVE POOL!!!

  • Ohhhh I love the disney magic! Such a fun ship but a terrible way to ruin the vacation! I went on a princess ship and had the same thing happen in alaska

  • @SamScuff We still had fun, I don't think it ruined the vacation :) It was just different.

  • i was working during this!!!!!

  • @wwwclairehirstcouk Cool, if you can forward it some of the crew wanted to see the video, but I didn't have a way to contact them.

  • @ShawnLara is it scary ? lol im goin on this cruise sometime when my dad gets out of army

  • i was working on the ship when this was going on!!!

  • i was working on the ship when this was happening- mental eh!!!

  • i'm getting kinda sea sick watching this. Guess i am never going on a cruise.

  • @DylanTh3Villian: This is rare, don't let it stop you, we had a great time. (This is one day of like 50 or something I've spent on this ship).

  • 10 my ass, look in a Mariners Handbook, thats a visual 8 maybe a small 9, 10 my ass.

  • @Truimphful: Well, that's what the crew (captain) said, and why I put a ?. I think they were judging based on windspeed (note the huge heel). Also, this video isn't all at the "worst" parts.

  • I wouldnt have even got outa bed, if ya sleep through it it doesnt affect you as much. Never heard of anyone roping off an area but after seeing the one big wave I can see why they did. I always seem to find these rough seas when looking at Med cruises vs Carib cruises.

  • I wish i had a storm like this on one of my cruises. Looks like fun!

  • @nycbrickman I suppose it depends, some people were having no fun. I thought it was interesting, but I "knew" that it wasn't any real threat to the ship. I wasn't getting that queezy. In the gym (where the wave splashed the window above the bridge), it felt like you were on an elevator that couldn't make up it's mind which way to go :)

  • not so magic after all

  • not so magic after all!

  • I was on this cruise! My family were really seasick that day fortunately I was ok. It was a little scary though!

  • This was same as what we experienced on the Royal Carribean Independance of the Seas inJune 2008 crossing thru the Bay of Biscay , scary to look at but the ship coped quite well , they have stabilisers now which aid motion on rough seas but unsettling all the same ours was worst at night we could feel ship rise and thump the water hard and our ship i think is bigger than this too !!!! WOW

  • The last I recall of that day, was hugging the waste basket in bed. Breakfast was not cool the second time around.

  • We were on P&O oceana in 2008 when we had a hurricane in the bay of biscay, the waves were 40+ feet high and were crashing over the promenade deck, all entertainment was cancelled and the plates were sliding off the tables in the restaurant. All outside deck space was closed because they were worried someone would get washed or blown overboard... Im gutted I didnt video it for youtube so good job to you in recording the action

We sailed on the Magic in 09... Isnt animators a great restaurant...

  • Wow! Were you on the April 24, 2010 cruise? We just got back from the 5/5 Med and it was smooth sailing all the way. "Wavelets" as described from the "Report from the Bridge". I'm still trying to get my landlegs back. I can't imagine what you guys went through during those seas!

  • I had fun, but many people got seasick for some reason. I should point out that this was only one day, most of the time on the Med was really flat. Also the prediction for the storm's path was vague, so the captain couldn't avoid it. Once it was clear that we were in the storm, he headed north so that we were sheltered by the lee of the coast. (Waves get worse the longer the wind has to stir them up.) By early afternoon we were in normal conditions.

  • @ShawnLara ok maybe 10, I have had another look. I Iam a sailor on cruise ships.

  • @Truimphful That must be interesting :) I'll defer to your judgement. And I was certainly a bit excitable taking the video.

  • that is some big waves looks like fun!

  • I was there, it was pretty rough that day. I like the part that starts at 1:30 showing the front of the ship...wild...
