  • Arnold Palmer was and is, golf's King. He had more shots in his bag than Nicklaus could have ever dreamed possible. Jack simply overpowered courses with his driver (a poor player from 100 yds in.) Palmer had ALL the shots. If Jack had ever had to bear the burdens of building the tour like Arnold did, he would have been a footnote in the record books, Palmer began his pro career in 1955 & made it possible for guys like Nicklaus to get endorsement deals & play for serious money.

  • @WALRU11 Simply not true. Mr. Palmer is the King. However, Mr. Nicklaus was a better player than Mr. Palmer was, Mr. Palmer has even said so himself. Mr. Nicklaus was NOT a poor player from 100 yards and in, he was average with his wedges and one of the best putters ever to play the game. Mr. Palmer on more than one occasion has said that he wished he could have had the putting ability that Mr. Nicklaus had. And vice versa. At the end of the day, Mr. Nicklaus was the better player, enough said.

  • @genebagleyjr Nonsense. Nicklaus admitted his poor play from 100 yds in. Sans booming drives (past hazards) & a deft touch on fast greens, he was a fairly mediocre player. Trevino, Dave Hill, & others said, "Put my ball beside Jack's drives & see who wins from there on in." Arn had more shots, but let his vast growing multifarious business empire interests interfere with his scheduling & suffered. Jack dropped McCormack, said "No!" to outsiders, carefully picked his courses - & won more.

  • @WALRU11 Thank you, you just proved my point. Nicklaus was the better player. Palmer knew what it took to be a better player and yet didn't do it. The fact is true about how Palmer's father treated him, but HE could have chosen to rise above it. The biggest difference between Nicklaus and everyone else is that he wasn't afraid to go after anyone or anything on the course, whereas others were. That's why Nicklaus is the greatest player of all time, bar none. Even Palmer, and Trevino said he was.

  • @genebagleyjr Your logic is specious, your reasoning vacuous. It isn't a mere matter of knowing what to do but not doing it. Golf at that level is 90% mental. It's about having the confidence to dominate. Nicklaus' Teutonic ego, fed by idol worshippers like you, his $upportive Papa & Jack Grout, gave this spoiled child a 2 stroke advantage per round. Palmer had a 2-stroke handicap per round by NEVER having even approval from his harsh & domineering father. Woods is greater than Nicklaus.

  • @genebagleyjr Nicklaus had the ability to overpower carefully-selected courses designed during the hickory-shaft era & he was good on fast greens. From 100 yds in & saves? Rather dismal. But he had a monstrous Teutonic ego stoked by Charlie N. & Jack Grout, while Arn was mistreated & criticized by his Pap no matter how greatly he achieved. Psych advantage to Jack. As for shot-making, Jack has admitted he learned a variety of shots from Arn, who built the tour to his own detriment.

  • @WALRU11 Nicklaus had the ability to overpower many golf courses just like Palmer had as well. Nicklaus wasn't that much longer off the tee than Palmer, both were great long iron players and both had good putting strokes. Nicklaus was AVERAGE from 100 yards and in, not poor as you stated. There is no way he could have won as many times as he did without being at least an average wedge player. The fact is record wise, Nicklaus was a better player than Palmer and Palmer would be the 1st to say it.

  • @genebagleyjr JWN is overrated. HIs 29" thighs gave him a 4 stroke power advantage per round, reducing par 72 courses to 68. As Trevino said, put Jack back where he hit his 2nd shots from, & he wouldn't have won half the tournaments he did. Spoiled & egotistical, with a vaunted Germanic hauteur, he had everything handed to him his entire privileged life. Palmer had to BUILD the tour w/o $ his 1st 6 mos., for Jack to be guaranteed $100k his rookie year. Palmer had no rich Papa to bankroll him.
