Did you use a GoPro camera on the front and back (did you get permission, who cares). How did you mount the front and back camera? Did you use a scan disk 2gb card and did you edit it, if so how? How did you get the video into the split screen mode. I think this was a really original idea and interesting to watch. I like watching the rider in front go from the front camera to the rear camera as you pass. How do you tell the go pro to go into 8 times speed?
doing the race this year wont lie if u get sucked up in the draft so be it 112 is a lot of course for the officials to patrol. awesome video how did u end up finishing
I had witnessed the same drafting this year, unfortunately I didnt have a camera set up however I used the more aggressive method of telling several "Triathletes" to Fuck Off my wheels which seemed to work...
Yes, I saw people draftingbut I saw people being called for penalties that were NOT drafting. One male official didn't even give the people time to drop back before they called them. It was ridiculous. It was like they were trying to make a point to the wrong slow people.
Rules state as soon as the front wheel of a passing rider goes past the person being passed then that person has to begin dropping back immediatly pronto NOW.
You can't just set there for couple seconds and then back off. If they don't start immediately then there is no specific time to give them. you can't set there say 3 or 4 seconds and then start backing off.
I believe more penalties were missed than made by mistake.
I was there. There were so many people that it was hard not to be in a pack at some point of the race. The mid packers were called for so many drafting penalties. Are you drafting when you are going 17 mph ? I don't think so!!!
The videos shown so far are at 34 miles into the race While you don't get a big advantage drafting at 17mph(unless in a head wind(say the 12mph on H 20) its still drafting no excuse. I took the video I've been there 10 times.
You drop back when passed when passingneed 20 seconds to do so once you start you have to pass
I post first hour and a half rear cam timlapse 8 times speed soon. I started bike around one of the most dense after t1(60-65 a minute) plenty of room video will show.
Almost no one and I mean no one rides in aero for 112 miles straight doesn't happen especially on a flat course you have to get up stretch. Setting up for 20 seconds or so is more beneficial than the time or effort lost.
Of course if your drafting like some in the video you loose nothing.
Ok...lets face the facts...there were 1300 "first timers" (they will do anything to get that finishline)... and as we all know it is flat as a pancake with a one loop course...where the hell is everyone going to go and yes "haters" there were cards being given out on the course... way to go officials(you can't be everywhere all the time, keep up the good work Ironman staff and remember "the mirror test" competitiors...it's you and you know what you did!
its flat but not as a pancake H20 has some gradual rollers and stiff head wind on the section where those videos were takein. BUT its flat in comparison.
If I could post the entire rear video from t1 to hour 52 it lasted you'd see there was plenty of room in the first 35 miles where this pack formed.. these were not newbies this happens every year.
See in the video how much room in front and rear around the pack they chose not to separate
Excellent video. I've done this race 5 times and its the same every year. The only way to stop this blatant cheating is deterrent and enforcement. if the penalty for cheating by drafting was the same as cheating by drugs - a 2 year ban for the first offense - drafting would drop dramatically.
I was out on bike course late due to a very slow swim. I saw patches of drafters, but since I was more in the rear didn't see much.
I did see about a handful of earplugs for music. Man I could have used that. I had "The wheels on the bus go round and round" stuck in my head since that is what I sang to my 4 month old daughter before the swim start . . .
Excellent video. Of course, I was too far back in the race to see any of this. Being an engineer my trade, I was wondering if you would share how you captured this video from your bike? Very imoressive. I would love to have done something like this just for me to capture me riding the course and remember being in the race...
Where where the officials in this race? Have a friend who was in the race and he said it was like this all way, except he managed to overtake 900 on the bike. He had to fight hard to get away from the packs as they tried to catch his wheel when he passed them. He only saw two motorbikes with officials. This is the thrid video I have seen so far, and it has been described like this in many blogs. What a shame the race has been branded this way. Only the guys in the race could have changed it.
I did not see as much drafting as I expected. I also saw 4 or 5 people get yellow or red cards. Seemed to me that they are trying there best to control it, but too much distance to be everywhere at once.
I was in the race and saw one large group doing the same thing. Not sure if it was the same group or not but still kinda stinks. When I was passed it was by about 25-30 riders all grouped together, blocking and drafting. If your going to spend the time to do an Ironman, do the Ironman and dont cheat...what a waste.

What will this vid do beside make Mr. Holmes a youtube attention whore? Nothing, he's not a race official, nobody will be given a penalty because of this..
Keep in mind, the people that he's catching on this video for the most part are not threats to be Kona qualifyers.

Yes gopro front and rear(sd cam), permission no don't care,
Using gopros tubing mounting kits is how I mounted them.
I used 8 gig sdhc card in each with litium 3 hour AAA batteries(before gopro hd cameout)
I used quicktime pro to do split screen and used imovie to do 8x speed.
used 2 gopro up front since one won't cover whole bike back only lasted 3 hours.
I had vhold Countour hd on my helmet as well as olympus handheld waterproof for swim

Disc rear wheel: $1000, Aero bars: $200, Aero helmet: $150, Sitting up in the worst aerodynamic position possible; Worthless.

Hope you had a great race :)

This is pretty cool how you set up the camera on your bike. Just sucks to see so many people drafting.
