I'm a 47 y/o divorced male. I have 2 adult daughters. Both are single working mother and have 1 daughter each. My oldest daughter is widowed (Afghanistan 2002). My new granddaughter's father is an Arab Christian who is an Israeli citizen who had to leave because his student visa expired. You can celebrate anything in America. Like I said before, a lot of people don't share the same views anymore. Now a days virginity isn't considered "natural" as you put it. Do you know how hard it is to guard yourself in a world that is completely filled with sex? Many of us are going against the grain here, and its extremely hard.
I "guard" myself pretty well. Maybe because I've seen how some of my friends define who they are by who they're dating or sleeping with, or because I've seen how they get too emotionally attached to sex. Without sexual education how will your children know how to make good choices and properly protect themselves? As the woman said 88% of the girls that vow to remain virgins have sex before marriage. One one hand it's good that these fathers are involved in their daughter's lives. On the other, being a virgin until marriage is a bit unrealistic, especially now that most young people are delaying marrage until their late twentys and even thirties. Maybe a better vow would be, ' I pledge to remain abstinent until I'm out of high school?'

Of course sex needs to be talked about. I think the reason why little kids are messing around is because sex is still "taboo". If it was out in the open, and it was talked about more, then little kids wouldn't be so interested. Because seven-year-olds have no hormonal reason to be interested in anything beyond masturbation. Neither one of you two have even addressed the issue of virginity, because neither one of you have been able to tell me one reason why virginity is bad. All you have been able to do is make statements that are solely based upon your opinions, which are reflected in YOUR AGENDA. However, you have contributed to my belief that you do not know what commitment is, further based upon MathGuy's comments on pledges. Commitment is work, which is probably something else you are ignorant of.

virginity doesn't really matter. it's the over-emphasis on it that is bad, causing unwarranted guilt in countless young girls. worse is done in the name of virginity, but i have a word limit.
the high value placed on virginity came from the days when women were little more than property to be sold to prospective husbands who wanted to ensure they were the only ones who ever 'knew' the woman, and all children would be theirs. this stems from instinctive jealousy behavior among males.

TheMathGuy, I wonder if you have ever even set foot on a farm? You do raise a valid point though. I agree that we should quit helping farmers, along with single parents. However, the problem with your argument is waste. We waste more food in the US than in any other country. The reason for this is because we import a lot of our food, so there is a surplus. I come from a farming family, so I know this problem very well. The government needs to quit helping farmers or quit slitting their throats.

But it is defeated because sex is what causes people to have kids; which causes children to be born. Sex without commitment causes single parents. On top of that, you youngsters have the highest divorce rate in history of recorded records. So you are not even committed when you are married. The result is single parents who cannot support their kids, and have to go on welfare. Which, by the way, is another contribution to the exhaustion of our money. Start taking responsibility for your actions!

generally, females in a strong religious setting tend to be remarkably subservient towards their men, and borderline fanatical when it comes to their religion. it comes with the usual strong religious upbringing for girls.
in a nutshell, most of the mothers in a household where the father would do this would love it.

CREEPY! As a former evangelical Christian though, I can understand exactly where this mindset is coming from. As a teenager I myself once pledged my virginity to God until marriage. Religion taught me that sex was dirty and to hate my own sexual feelings. Every "impure" thought had to be policed. It was pure HELL if you ask me! Nothing like good old fashioned religiously inspired self-loathing!

Is it any surprise that after repressing their sexuality for so long, religious people often go off the deep end and end up promiscuously having unprotected sex like crazy? The fact that virginity is equated with purity whereas pornography, sex before marriage, and even thinking sexual thoughts are seen as stains upon one's soul speaks volumes about the oppressive religious mindset. It reminds me of the old puritans who regarded all pleasure as sinful.

Like I told Kate in the letter I wrote her: I like to set back and laugh at people who get STDs, AIDS, etc, etc. I do not care how you youngsters destroy your lives. However, I do not like the fact that your decisions to have sex are costing $14.1 Billion a year. That's a little much. Your uneducated....there are people who get stds that are married-that have only had sex with their partner--my aunts a nurse,my wifes a pharmacist. I know 2 conservative people....just got married in July and got a urinary tract infection-BOTH WHERE VIRGINS-get your facts straight. I lost my virginity-so did my wife long before we met and got married----NO STD`s,no Aids...dumbass conservafuck.

I am thinking that you need to go and look up STDs and unrinary tract infections (I did, its realy easy; You can "google" it); because you need to get YOUR facts straight. Urinary tract infections are caused by bacteria in the digestive lining. They are rarely spread by sex. However, since you are claiming that it is a STD, then you only have four options.

1. They got it from their parents 2 They got it from a hospital visit because they were exposed to an instrument 3 One or both committed adultery 4 One or both lied to you and weren't really virgins. If it was a STD, they got it from somewhere. You don't just wake up one morning and say "well I got a STD today." STDs are transmitted by sexually contact either directly or indirectly with the genitalia or an infected area of the skin. And younger you are, the more you are likely to get STDs.

Hilarious. They are all so repressed. I'd like to ask those 80-something percent of girls whether they used a condom when they first had sex. Also, why only the daughters? Why is it ok for boys to be sexual, and it's a sin for girls to be the same way? This expectation of "purity" from a human being who will have the same sex drive as her male counterpart, while the male is not expected to be "pure," is a blatant sexist statement that I regard with a high level of disgust.

Actually, in some conservative circles the males are expected to be pure also. Where I grew up we made pledges in all-male Bible studies not to ever look at pornography or masturbate or think "impure" (i.e. sexual) thoughts. I don't know anyone who actually succeeded...

After watching this on Gisburne's website I've come to realize that christians are starved for membership. This takes disgusting to a whole new level, and I wanna follow these girls and see just exactly when they "lose" their virginity, and how they lost it. Because these pledge kids, don't only have sex younger and unmarried, they also have more dangerous sex without contraceptives. They don't believe in condoms but anal sex is A-OK.

It is slightly odd...perhaps taking things to an extreme. It would seem a lot more appropriate to me if the girls simply made a vow personally in church. And why just the fathers? There's an odd belief among conservative christians that only men really have an interest in pornography.
