everyone who wants 2 make this skirt... u will need 2 add loooooots of inches to the meausrument of the waist/hip of the skirt. what i would do is take the skirt NOT folded in half trace it, then straighten out one of the egdes and cut on fold. that would make the front. then fold the skirt in half then the trace ionto some paper THAT would make the back. then make the waistband like she did in the vid. this waywhen u make the pleats there will be lots of pleats leftover to cut to samesizeasyolk
@xic4loca See if any friends are sewers that are willing to teach you some pointers. If not, check with your City to see if they offer sewing classes like mine did. Otherwise, the local fabric store might be able to help you out (there are a few by my house that offer sewing classes)
:)
I learned from my mom, fine tuning at a sewing class, mastering techniques by using a sewing book
I know a lot of people have asked how many yards you used, and nobody has answered. So just to ask again, because I am very curious - How many yards did you use to make this skirt?
@AthleteESM807 When I first saw this tutorial i was asking the same question. But i find that an easy way to find out how much a fabric you will need when you gather or pleat something is to take a little strip of fabric, say about 9 inches long and pleat that and measure how long that is after you pleat it. Like if you did use a 9 inch strip and when it was pleated it was 3 inches you know you have to triple your measurements to have enough fabric. :)
cool, but don't you think a high waisted version of this would be awesome too? come to think of it though, maby not. GREAT WORK for the vid though!!!!!! thanks
Oh my God, I LOVE these videos way more. As a fashion student, I'm learning more from these than I do in my actual classes. Thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to share your knowledge!
OMG This is AMAZING!!!! I REALLY want to go to joanns right now and get some fabric to do this my self. XD Loved it. Pretty easy and straight foward. =3 Thank you sooooo much!!!!! <3
You showed how to trace pattern of the skirt and facings, but you never showed show to increase the length of the pattern for the pleats. You took a lot of time but left out one of the most important parts. I couldn't even do as well as you did but I thought I'd point it out anyways
@fmmineo from the looks of it, it's (width of complete pleat x 3) x (waist size / width of complete pleat). As you can see width of complete pleat cancels out each other so we're left with the formula ==> 3 x waist size. As the author suggested to have extra fabric to cover unforeseen, then I'll add 24 inches, enough to make 2 more pleats(width of pleat=4, so 4x3x2). Example of a waist size of 28" then it'll be 3 x 28 = 84, 84 +24 = 108 inches. There you have it.
Oh gosh this is so cute! And after seeing the movie, I've been wanting to make some of the clothes and you made this look so easy, especially since I've always wanted to make a pleated skirt. Thanks so much! :D
What a great little project! I made a similar skirt a while back as an upcycling project; now I can't wait to do it again with a bit more professionalism.
When you finish one pleat and move onto the other ones down the line would you recommend beginners to pin the pleats down so we don't lose the spots or have the fabric accidentally shift while trying to do the other pleats?
@NakaharaSunako I'm probably not the one you thought would answer this but... As a person who has made pleated skirts before.... YES! I highly recommend that beginners pin their pleats as they go, as an alternative though, you can iron them as you go along.
You guys should check Corinne's channel now it's getting so inspiring and creative it for all of us who miss the old days when she was here her channels name is craftovision
professional pattern making advise...the back of the skirt has to be "taller" at the top or the hem by at least 1/2in. this is so your butt doesnt show when the skirt is short like that. it might look weird when not worn but when u wear it, the hem will look strait all around and not up at the butt area
Though I was losing track a bit of all the different parts in the beginning, it became clear very fast. Have done some trial and error pleated skirts before that came out nice enough, but this is a great tutorial
Wow, great skirt and tutorial!!! But I didn't understand half of that. I don't know if Bionerd has time or if another youtubber can do this, but is there any way that I can get the special ed version of this video. I'm a beginning sewer and I have no clue what understitching & some of the other terms are. I'm researching this stuff, but it's not going well.
@glitterandglueforyou My video "Sewing tutorial: Box Pleated Skirt" goes into more detail about measurements. Although the finished skirt looks nothing alike, the theory is the same.
For a box pleated skirt you need a piece that is three times as long as the bottom edge of the yoke because you end up with three layers to each pleat...Plus a little extra. You will need to figure out how many pleats you want...Put the yoke on and pin it in the back and figure out how many pleats you want and mark the edges on the yoke. Measure the width of the pleat so you will know how big to make the folds..your template will be half of the width of the top part of the pleat where it shows.
I love this tutorial but then I am a professional seamstress. I totally get all of the steps and know how to estimate the fabric. A skirt this complicated is worth a bit more time, at least 15 min. so that you could get a little bit more detailed for people who are not great sewers....
I think Bionerd has a great knack for sewing. Although I am a fan of the original episodes and hosts... shes very easy to listen to. I just wish she approached easier ideas. Although all her projects come out great.
Did I miss something? or are there no real measurements or anything other than a "Hey this is a long piece of fabric that we're going to pleat?" Understood that it's all about personal preference.....but still :/
@Squeakerella Well the measurements would depend on your size, how many pleats you want, what size pleats you want, et cetera. She could tell you what she used, but unless you happen to be the exact same size and shape as her, it might not do you much good. I'd suggest mocking up your pleats on some scrap fabric, maybe a dollar store bed sheet, and use that as a pattern.
@Squeakerella Box pleated skirts use 3 times the width of of where the skirt attaches to the waistband. See my video titled "Sewing tutorial: Box Pleated Skirt"
I feel like TB and SLoaBN are exactly the same channel now. Which sucks, becaue I love SecretLife and I like the old TB and I wish they were alive at the same time, erego now. Great vid, I'm going to try and make this :)
To be honest, I subscribed to Threadbanger after watching your videos. I do like the older ones, but yours are just great. They're really clear and easy to follow. Plus, you make things that are practical. I'm a big fan. I just hope that you don't feel like people don't appreciate your hard work. I'm getting a sewing machine for my birthday, and I'm going to start with a few of your basic tutorials. :)
Your tutorials are always really good, and its always cool stuff your making. But I feel like, as a guy, I've been pushed out of the threadbanger community a bit, which is sad because I used to spend so much time on this channel and the threadbangers website, but I just don't bother anymore. I realise its not your fault as your just showing what you like to make, but it would be nice to see a few at least unisex clothing tutorials, thanks. Sorry if I come over a bit complainy, I don't mean to.
@aWierdo u are one of the few guys who politely have suggested me to do something for men and I will keep you guys in mind especially when it comes to alterations. However I am trained in Women's wear and as far as I have seen on TB, no one likes my style and that goes for guys as well. So I often times feel like I am wasting my time. BUT! since you are so sweet do YOU have any suggestions?
@SecretLifeOfaBioNerd Thats not true, loads of people like your stuff, its just the people who don't are really loud about it. Every channel has haters, but you can just look at the like bar to tell that people do appreciate you. Personally I think your stuff is awesome and very professional, I do still learn stuff from your video's just from the techniques and the way you make patterns etc. I do have some ideas and suggestions but I'm coming up to the character limit so I'll inbox you :]

I love the tutorial but girly you need to step up the quality a little. or you know HOST the show not just throw things at us. really glad you took over and kept TB going but sad that the energy and quiality is just gone :/
@PBOreoCookieGirl She's here to teach you how to sew, not entertain you. She has enough to do anyway besides spoiling a bunch of youtube brats. I really wasn't a fun of the original Threadbanger hosting anyway.
@PBOreoCookieGirl In a way, I agree, but you do have to remember this... she is doing this ALL ON HER OWN. It was a HUGE mistake from the original cast of Threadbanger, to only get "two" people to continue what they created. and I used " on the word two, because the other girl has bareley done anything, or "teatched" us anything useful (I remember the bottle flower and..... thats it...) I would rather see them expand the cast. she is doing a great job considering shes alone.
@narmolania I completely agree. She has been ALONE and I get the impression viewers only care about the fact that she replaced the old cast and that is why theyre holding grudges. Everyone who keeps bashing her, just don't watch the videos and don't complain because I bet half of you can't do it any better.
@PBOreoCookieGirl Why is this comment getting voted down so much it doesn't show??? Ridiculous. It wasn't unfairly attacking her, just stating an opinion. Yes, she's doing a decent job keeping this alive, but her projects are not as varied as threadbanger used to be. She's a DIY fashionista, not DIY for lifer.
@AyNay246 I really don't know or care why people thumbs downed my comment...but its true...the audio quality went down and its not a show any longer but only a series of diys with no host. pure fact not opinion. I adore secretlifeofabionerd... she has a lot of great tuts but like you said AY she's a DIY fashonista not a DIY for lifer. simple. I didn't mean anything bad by it.
@PBOreoCookieGirl LOL I like to believe that I am no longer a "DIY-er" but more so a Designer in Training. So yes we do come from two different levels of expectations when it comes to videos. However, I felt that I don't want to waste time editing a video to entertain you, when I can spend more time showing you how to make something and not do a crum job of it. People think DIY saves money, but more wastes it because their DIY clothing falls apart. From my experience it's not worth it.
@SecretLifeOfaBioNerd I hope you don't think that i meant any of it in a truly negative way. I adore the show and I adore everything you do. It was an observation and as a vid editor I noticed it quickly and while my tact wasn't wholly with me...I didn't say anything bad about you, or what you do. I really look up to you and think its great you can take on such a big role...my vid-quality expectations are just higher. thats all.
@PBOreoCookieGirl oh but of course they are higher! RCM did a great job and they had a camera crew/someone to help edit their videos for them sometimes (so i've heard not sure though LOL). I am just another "utuber" so I really didn't come in equipped. I wish I was because I personally do want better quality vids, and present it in a more pro format. I wish I had more help. Feels like I am serving high end vodka in a urine test cup. <---LOL
@PBOreoCookieGirl You got down-voted because the way you approached your opinion. You come off sounding incredibly condescending and unappreciative. I understand where you're coming from, but, as a person doing what three people used to do, she's doing a great job.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@PBOreoCookieGirl go die in a hole.... sorry for my being mean but its true... you need to go die in a hole... maby get killed with a spoon but I'm not THAT mean... sometimes i am though :)

Is it easier to hem before pleating?
Mew2501 3 months ago
Damn it, I have to correct myself again. Sorry for the confusion.
The formula = hip circumference divided by 4" = # of pleats.
# of pleats x 12" = amount of fabric needed.
(Note: this is all based on using the same measurements of pleating that are used in the video.)

SecretLifeOfaBioNerd 11 months ago
@SecretLifeOfaBioNerd Thats not true, loads of people like your stuff, its just the people who don't are really loud about it. Every channel has haters, but you can just look at the like bar to tell that people do appreciate you. Personally I think your stuff is awesome and very professional, I do still learn stuff from your video's just from the techniques and the way you make patterns etc. I do have some ideas and suggestions but I'm coming up to the character limit so I'll inbox you :]

Excellent tutorial! Thanks for sharing. I liked how you showed how to make a pattern using clothes you already have.

and also, does it matter what fabric we use because we are pleating?
KataraKottenbal 11 months ago
@KataraKottenbal use a med weight fabric so you can get the pleats to look nicely.

Onyxaxe 11 months ago 82
@PBOreoCookieGirl In a way, I agree, but you do have to remember this... she is doing this ALL ON HER OWN. It was a HUGE mistake from the original cast of Threadbanger, to only get "two" people to continue what they created. and I used " on the word two, because the other girl has bareley done anything, or "teatched" us anything useful (I remember the bottle flower and..... thats it...) I would rather see them expand the cast. she is doing a great job considering shes alone.
narmolania 11 months ago 5

AyNay246 11 months ago 3
@AyNay246 I really don't know or care why people thumbs downed my comment...but its true...the audio quality went down and its not a show any longer but only a series of diys with no host. pure fact not opinion. I adore secretlifeofabionerd... she has a lot of great tuts but like you said AY she's a DIY fashonista not a DIY for lifer. simple. I didn't mean anything bad by it.
PBOreoCookieGirl 11 months ago 4
@PBOreoCookieGirl LOL I like to believe that I am no longer a "DIY-er" but more so a Designer in Training. So yes we do come from two different levels of expectations when it comes to videos. However, I felt that I don't want to waste time editing a video to entertain you, when I can spend more time showing you how to make something and not do a crum job of it. People think DIY saves money, but more wastes it because their DIY clothing falls apart. From my experience it's not worth it.
SecretLifeOfaBioNerd 11 months ago 16
@SecretLifeOfaBioNerd I hope you don't think that i meant any of it in a truly negative way. I adore the show and I adore everything you do. It was an observation and as a vid editor I noticed it quickly and while my tact wasn't wholly with me...I didn't say anything bad about you, or what you do. I really look up to you and think its great you can take on such a big role...my vid-quality expectations are just higher. thats all.
PBOreoCookieGirl 11 months ago
