  • I have a cheap one, today took it out of my pocket, half of the "functions" just dropped on the floor, it became loose.

Don't think twice before getting good stuff, don't get those cheap shit.

  • Gerber has a lifetime warranty! They cost less than half than the cheaper leatherman tool. I understand that leatherman has an amazing product. I think gerber does too. The only tool that works is the one you have. If you don't have anything u have nothing.

  • Leatherman? Pfft, give me a Gerber anyday.

  • @kneebush The only thing I like from Gerber is the pocket sharpener.

  • i had a cheap one for a couple years. it was fine for every day little stuff. than i tried to use the pliers for some real work and bent the handles till it was useless. i say dont bother with the expensive tools.

  • ive used the cheap ozark trail.and ran it through its paces.it really served me well,i bought it for its saw mainly didnt have money at the time for good multi. just recieved a gerber as a gift, cant wait to try it out.

  • ok ok ok right, but everyday use you need real tools, not a multytool.

  • Have an old(original) Leatherman. Still kicking ass. Problem: when i cut an orange the juice drys on the blade and makes the blades hard to open. Needs cleaning regularly.

  • an emergency is the last time I would want to have to use a cheap tool

  • That Stanley multi-tool is basically a knock-off of the Gerber Suspension...check it out to see what I mean...

  • 10$ multitool is ok to have, but using it is definitely horror. It's like scene from 'Saw' movie: too blunt to cut chains, but ok to cut your feet.

  • i got a 5.00 dollar swisstool knockoff that I use at my tech school

I bought cheap in case some one gets sticky fingures

  • Are you kidding!!!? the cheapest letherman multi tool where i live cost 200 crowns.(about 25 dollars)

  • Victorinox makes real good quality M.T. also I have one since 2003 and i use it everyday 2 or 3 times a day at least and it´s been working great, but i do agree with you that you can have a backup cheap M.T. I have a couple of cheap M.T. which i never use. The primary M.T. is my Victorinox. Great perspective and vid.

  • Are you a fan of the SOG multi tools? In my opinion they're better and the fact they have compound leverage is a very nice feature.

  • @pontfire78 Compound leverage is a nice feature on those SOG's, true.

  • Leatherman is not the only good multi tool evar... gosh

  • I'm gonna take a wild guess and say that you're a little passionate about multitools.

  • 3:36 yeah thats what i thought too untill my wife got pregnant...

  • 127 hours comes into mind. You'll get what I'm taking about if you watched the movie.

  • @suicidewafflez I did. Loved it.

  • OK DUDE WE GET IT !!!!

  • I have several multi tools and almost all of them are cheap. one is a 10 dollar winchester, not a great tool, but the pliers are spring loaded which is a plus. Next is the leatherman kick, its pretty good overall but its not spring loaded and doesn't have as many tools as any of the others. my favorite for the under 30 Dollar price range is the winchester winframe, it's tools open out so I never have to open the pliers to get to a tool, it has spring loaded pliers, it has 8 bits, and is durable.

  • I agree with this, I've used cheap multi-tools for all different kinds of little stuff but after a couple good uses they tend to break, not huge damage ( still use able ) but also not the best

  • Love your philosophy. Do u apply that to knives?

  • would a sak be kinda be considered a multi-tool???

  • i like the video. but your rather repetitive

  • Your absolutely right, I have a "cheap" multi-tool that I seldom use.

I have it just to have it.

But I'm looking into upgrading to Squirt S4 and then when I can afford it move on to a wave.

If in an emergency your (lower quality) tool breaks I don't think you'll have time to wait for a new tool to be sent in the mail so then what U do.

    Thanks 4 the informative review.

  • Go to Lowes and get the Kobalt Multi Tool for $20...it holds up with the best of 'em at a great price and even comes with a nice durable lock-blade knife. You can't go wrong!

  • People complain a lot about how the word "cheap" is used here.

A tool that you will use every day would be better off with not only high quality but also a good warranty. It will be put through some hard work and it'll need that extra edge.

A "cheaper" multitool, even with the warranty, might have the teeth on the pliers worn off or breaking, the tools bending, looser pivots and the like.

I'd put a cheapo tool in a car to use in emergencies but for EDC i'd go with a better one.

  • I got one brand called "Duratest"

  • Stanley has a lifetime warranty, so I would not call it cheap. Your biggest complaint about it was that it's not as sleek. So? I would gladly stock up on 7 Stanleys for the price of one leatherman.

  • i use to think multitools were really good, then i got a leatherman and i can tell a big difference in the quality

  • I am a professional i work with many tools,i have a Surge and a Crunch and i use them everyday. And i´ve always ask mutch to my tools for that reason LEATHERMAN is my absolute favorite.

  • You admit you have used the 10 dollar tool, and it still looks brand new, so I don't see what gives you the right to call it cheap. This video is just your way of justifying spending more money for a leatherman. I had the original leatherman, it broke. I have a Shrade Tough, have used it hard for 15 years, still works perfect, so leatherman is not the best.

  • I completely agree!!!!

  • love my LM SKELLETOOL BUT MY STANLEY AND PROTOCAL ARE SPECIAL TO ME IDK WHY BUT THEY ARE

  • BTW, Victorinox has a limited lifetime warranty with wording almost identical to Leatherman's 25 year warranty.

  • There is a debate, actually. It's on-going and you'll never get 100% agreement. Leatherman, Victorinox, SOG, Gerber, etc. Some still love their Schrade Tough Tools. As far as some people are concerned, multi-tools are pale imitations of real tools, anyway.

I have a Leatherman PST that was given to me by someone who doesn't like multi-tools. I also have a Victorinox SwissTool that I got in a lot of knives.

  • the stanley is ugly as hell , leatherman make there product to be nice to look at and feel good to hold i use to own the sideclip and with the plier i remove a thief proof wheel lug nut since then i own all of them thats 1100$ worth of leatherman i have a drawer full of them and i use all of them on a regular basis (job require) and so far the charge is there best issue,

  • it's not in the tool, it's how you use it.

you can ruin a letherman in a single use if you don't know what you're doing, or make a stanly last for years if you do.

overall, i would prefer the close tolerance of the letherman or one of similar make. there is no compromise for quality.

  • I have the Stanley multi tool and this guy doesn't know what he's talking about, as far as durability is concerned. It's a very heavy duty tool, much better than the walmart brand. Is it a Leatherman? No, but it's also about a 5th of the cost. Some of the smaller tools are difficult to get at on the Stanley, so it's probably not something you'd carry everyday. But no way in hell is it an emergency only piece of equipment. Go to a hardware store and check it out for yourself.

  • @unclemevin All I'm "talking about" is my own experience. While assembling a small desk with that Stanley, I had the philips head fold back on me several times - just a little bit of torque and downward pressure and it folded, messing up the finish of the desk. The tools don't lock open - they don't even retain open very well. I stand by what I said - it's an emergency-only tool. I'd recommend even the cheapest L-man (check out the Kick @ $20) over that Stanley. Glad you're happy with it though.

  • @unclemevin

that stanley multi tool is a piece of shit, i know from experience, i dropped it on a tile floor from 3 feet and it broke, the pliers were in two pieces and the plastic on the sides broke as well, not heavy duty at all. i now own a wave and an s2 juice and those things are rock solid

  • @jedininjapirate713

That simply has not been my experience with the Stanley tool. I've dropped it many times on concrete and it works just like the day I bought it. Maybe yours and mine were made in different factories, who knows? And again, I'm not saying the Stanley tool is as good as a Leatherman. I'm only saying that it's a good value for the money.

  • @unclemevin I'll order one and review it,your comment made me curious I'm always looking for good affordable tools to recommend to my subscribers, thanks!

  • im gonna get the swisstool

  • ive got a winchester 20 function multi tool the ive had for 2 years ive carried it months at a time befor great tool payed 10$ plus it came with 2 other knives

  • of course a cheap one can do the job over years, and of course if you buy a leatherman, or sog, or gerber, you buy the name... a little bit.

but the leathermans i have, are very well made and will do the job in 25 years or in 40 years, i guess.

but he is right, better something cheap, than nothing, if you use it every day you will go automaticly to a higher value multitool, like leatherman... i prefer the skeletool and the juice cs 4.

  • There's a place for inexpensive multi tools I've found. Especially the Sheffield 12000- I've used that one every day for years.

  • I have one of the cheap multi-tools and I use it pretty often. I've had it for 3 years and it still works great. I think you're just a little bias cause you like leatherman so much...

  • @Lolztobehad i think the cheaper ones are fine to have around but i personally would like to get a leatherman for the worrenty and they also have more things.

  • @3152222 I guess if you like knives alot, then sure why not. But for the average person, this review is kind of excessive. I don't think someone's going to carry around a $70 multi-tool when a $20 from walmart will do just fine.

  • @Lolztobehad i will rather have a leatherman ALX than what i have but i am 12 and dont have the money i have 2 dollers.

  • @3152222 You'll be fine, dude lol

  • "Something" is still better than Nothing!

  • @hypersonicdragon the best knife is the one you have, not the one sitting in your dresser drawer that cost so much fuckin money that you are afraid of damaging it!

  • @sagehalo4 well said, well said...you are absolutely right!

  • Just picked up the Home Depot Husky Brand MultiTool. Comparable to a Leatherman Kick, big knife, small knife, serrated, saw, screw drivers, can opener, pliers and only $10! plus lifetime warranty, so if it turns out that is some cheap crap, I can just wear it out and get it replaced. Was about to give in to the $70 wave, when I looked down and saw this thing :D basically describes me then

  • I got something...

  • its probably not a good idea to put a leatherman into a schoolbag... but nice video

  • @suncool25 I guess that depends on the school. College campuses for instance should have no problem with adults carrying multi-tools in their bags.

  • @TheLateBoyScout thats true but if you are in grade school thats a different story

  • good vid, although you really didnt explain exactly why the cheap ones were so bad compared to the almighty leatherman... i was hoping to here more technical reasons why other than just opinion so i could really see if i should shell out the money for a leatherman/gerber/kershaw or just buy a small cheap multi tool

  • @darkinertia2 True, I didn't really cover that. Possibly a subject for a follow-up vid. The short answer is that cheap tools, just like cheap knives, aren't typically made of the same quality materials, and don't typically have the same quality design and manufacture as the more expensive ones. Will they get the job done in the short term? Yes, probably. In the long term? I wouldn't count on it.

  • @TheLateBoyScout yeah ive realized that after i finally got my taste of a real high quality knife when i stepped up to get a BM griptillian...it really puts all my other knives to shame lol but when i think of multi tools it seems to me that they are made of the same kind of metals so its really confusing on trying to find one thats absolutely better so im just looking around for good designs and one preferably with scissors than pliers...any ideas?

  • @darkinertia2 If you want scissors, not pliers, and you don't mind something keychain sized, I recommend the Leatherman Micra.

I can't really say about the metals they're made of, but I suspect the higher priced is higher quality, plus the design of Leatherman's tools are top notch. They're easier and more comfortable to use, and you generally get more for the size and weight.

    Hope that helps.

  • @TheLateBoyScout ooohhhh thank you for pointing me to the micra! i sooo overlooked that while going through some leatherman MTs cuz im an idiot and thought it was pliers or something (those lil pics in google images can be deceiving lol) and for less than 20 and have everything i need? forget about it, its mine! :P im more of a DIY/electronics kinda person that takes up a lot of different projects so it would be nice to have a tool that replaced some of my other tools

  • @TheLateBoyScout also, do you know of any leathermans that may have an exacto knife blade adapter and/or razor blade adapter like a utility knife? man im really into collecting knive but i think im gonna check out the wonderful world of MTs for a while haha

  • @darkinertia2 I haven't seen one like you're describing, but check leatherman's website for their full collection. I've found the knives on their MT's to be pretty sharp and resharpen-able, though.

  • Leatherman needs to add a spring on their pliers and round out the sharp ass edges because I swear everytime I use it it feels like I'm going to cut my hands into ribbons.

  • The best knife is the one you have in your pocket

  • Will you make this video your PRIMARY video? I say NO! But, it was something. Not the best quality video....but a video nonetheless! If this video gets destoryed, at least you had something, right? I say YES!

  • @cruisaire

    LMAO!!!!

  • In an emergency any multitool is better then nothing... I keep an older Gerber 600 in the family burban... I also keep a medium tool box with wrenches,screwdirvers,1/4inch ractchet set, ect..... However the gerber resides in the glove regardless.

YOu dont even need to buy a really crappy one to save money.... Plenty of used Gerbers,Leathermans,SOGS on ebay...If its riding in a glovebox, then a USED Leatherman Surge or Supertool is the one to have with you when the car breaks down...

  • wow, better than an infomercial

  • @Mrshaquillej I picked it up on clearance at Target. Don't know where you'd find it right now.

  • Great video, I love mi wave, its my fav, but i have to admit that the swiss tool is actually tougher than any leatherman. anyway, i wouldnt change my wave for nothing (I have also de swiss tool and the spirit)

  • @jlvc6180 I need to try out some Victorinox MT's one of these days.

  • i say buy a leatherman kick its around 20 bucks

  • @H95Shooterv12 I have the Kick, and I agree. It's a better tool than either of these.

  • i don't get all the fuss about the price 70 is nothing, when you buy leatherman tools over seas they are about 200 and i still brought one

  • @Stainlessb2 idk, for slave like me, 70 bones is a day and a halfs wages. as the man said, a penny saved is a penny earned.

  • It's a good advice! I have a cheap MT that it's great for it's lower price and have use it several times. Realy helps when your're in a hurry. Thank's!

  • I agree, I own lots of "disposable" tools/knives etc...

  • I agree thanks.

  • You sound like nuntfancy

  • good video. thanks for sharing.

  • Sorry I didn't watch this video prior to making my comment on your other video man. This is a great video and so true! I have the Charge on my person every day. But, I also purchased 3 of these smaller MTs from china for the kits. Thanks for making this video for everyone, and you are really a great reviewer.

  • @homeslice352 No prob, dude. Thanks for the compliments.

  • Nice vid !

  • 5 STARS, and I agree that there is most definitely a place for "cheap stuff". I have a bunch of cheap MT's in the cars, garage, bug out bags... And most of them have been OK, some of them I got for like 3 bucks, and when they break or I lose em, I don't care. I feel the same about knives, guns, etc... You don't have to spend a pile of money to have something to fulfill a certain role. However, Leatherman rules.
