I used dental floss for mine. I didn't have a needle, so I just tied it in kind of a know and then cut off the extra. That worked too.

NO, it's NOT fake :) because it's not the cotton that is burning:) it's the fuel, because when the fuel is ignited, it will be flames of course, but the flame rises and it's too late to get hot down by the ball, it will only warm up by the orange so the ball does not burn up:)

It doesn't burn your hands because lighter fuel is highly volatile: all the heat goes up, and the ball itsel is merely warm. That's the same reason why the cotton itself doesn't burn: the only thing burning is the fuel.

It can still hurt you if you don't keep the ball in movement.
