It's just pyrex and vegetable oil.
Since they have the same refraction index, light passes through without changing speed, making the pyrex test tube seem invisible.

it will still work with a slid piece of pyrex, as long as there is no air in it.
Something in the pyrex will not disappear, it will merely appear to float in the oil.

explanation: pyrex and the oil he was using bend light at the same rate, so it makes it seem like the test tube disappears, Great experiment.
