I don't listen to the radio much anymore, with clear channel canned radio (canned s__t). Maybe WBBM out Chicago. I do remember the late BARNEY PIP on WOKY 920 in MILWAUKEE, WIS. He was there a short time before moving WCFL. And I think I'm right when say he was a very funny man. R.I.P. BARNEY.
@critic2080 That is so strange and sad.....similar thing happened to another great 60's AM radio DJ, Fred Freelance (Freg Mugler originally from Missouri I believe), of Roanoke, VA's WROV AM1240. He should have been in a major market like Chicago, however, he was our "hometown hero."
Fred was found dead (yeah, I know, "Fred is dead") in his apartment from a fire...he apparently went to sleep with a lit cigarette, and died from smoke inhalation on....a Friday the 13th..in themid 80's.
XM comes somewhat close to "personality radio", but commercial radio is completely gone! The wimps that are DJs on radio can't compare to the ones of the '50s-'70s. Today they can't pick their own music, and what music they play is the same CRAP played over and over and over . . .
This is fun! I grew up on rock and roll radio. The add for Petula Clark and Count Basie was priceless! I also dug the concert plugs for The Shadows Of Knight, The Little Boy Blues, and The Delvettes They were three legendary Chicago Bands! I've played all three of these bands on my radio show in Madison Wis in the 90's and 2000's!. Thanks for this!
This was when Radio was Radio. Simple promotions, great music, and fun dj's. Nowadays radio is nothing. Too many nationally syndicated shows instead of local personalities. And Clear Channel has praticically taken over every radio station in the country. Of course there's satelite radio as well. Radio is just not the way it used to be today.
I also remember Barney Pip and his trumpet routine! I especially liked that jingle that went..".When the moon begins to listen...it's the perfect time to listen...to...WCFL. W...C...F...L..." very appropriate since I could only hear the station at night from the AM bounce off the ionosphere.
@TBCSTARS "When the moon begins to GLISTEN!" Hehe. Yeah, the Chuck Blore jingles were pretty cool. Two L.A. radio stations (1110 KRLA and 570 KLAC) used that same package.
I was 16 in 1966 and living in the Chicago suburbs ..might have been listening to this live.

How "portable" is a TV with a 23-inch screen? I'd rather miss the bullfights than risk a hernia.

How about that? A broadcast from exactly 45 years ago today: Friday, March 18, 1966. I just love these old radio broadcasts.

WCFL was the quintessential example of personality radio- hands down.

This level of studio production cost a fortune...but oh was it beautiful!

When radio was personality, traffic reports included surface streets and Barney Pip got you hooked on peanut butter!
