Boston won in the third overtime when Glenn McDonald, a seldom-used player, scored 6 points off the bench. I remember watching this game, the greatest finals game in NBA history, imho. The game had everything ... great play, drama, and heroics. Hollywood couldn't write a better script.
In the third overtime, Westphal was inches away from getting another steal for Phoenix with around ten seconds remaining, with Phoenix down two.. Boston was able to play keep away and run out the clock. Wow.
The most brilliant strategy in basketball-Paul Westphal's intentional technical foul. With Boston by 1 pt. Phoenix had 0 timeouts left therefore had to inbound from way back and no time to score, so Westphal called an illegal TO to purposely get a technical foul and give Boston 1 l foul shot. The rules back then gave the team that incurred the technical possession of the ball after the freethrow was made and inbound at halfcourt to allow for that buzzer beater by Heard. Just brilliant.
@RGN07 That was smart...right along with the '91 playoffs between the Lakers and Blazers when Magic rolled the loose basketball down the other end of the court allowing time to run out on Portland.
Classic NBA... Brent Musburger, NBA uniforms that didn't look like pajamas, and a 3-OT thriller that has yet to be surpassed in the thousand-plus playoff games played since.
Wow! I just found this.I was actually at that game.
It was the best bball game I ever attended.
Actually, the Celts had a big lead in the first half. The Suns played a great 2nd half. Westphal was the best player on the court that night. I had stadium seats and they cost $7.00 each. You could not hear yourself think!!
i live in phx shut up, phx is a great team but fell apart this season, and when they would almost got to the finals like 3 yrs in a row its cus the spurs got them, which was the winning team. hmmm we do suck. but so do the teams that lost to the spurs then
Greatest game in the history of pro sports,Garfield heards shot,Curtis perrys prayer answered,Westphal insane, and yet the Celtics somehow won with Glenn McDonald starring as if he was Havlicek or Rick Barry in the overtime.
I was blessed to watch ever second of this triple overtime NBA Finals Game. It is to this day the Greatest NBA Game Ever Played! John Havlicek, JoJo White, Paul Westphal and Alvin Adams were simply incredible in this game. Every starting player had one of the best games of their careers. What a shame that one team had to lose this game. It seems like it was just yesterday.

@RGN07 After that playoffs, the NBA changed the rules to prevent this from happening.
