Keepaopenmind - I agree with you re: Sam Houston quote. But Houston was not against the war because slavery, it more the cost of lives and that it would most like end with a northern victory. Most people are unaware that one of major issue of the Texas / Mexico war was that Mexico outlawed slavery in 1831 and the the Texas had one year to free their slaves. As we know Texas won, so this was not a war about slavery...LOL
I was reading about some of the propaganda being fostered on the Internet. Lying seems to be the norm now. Anyway, the 1st Louisiana Regiment, according to the lie, was a Confederate regiment. There's a photograph of black soldiers in light uniforms. However, the real story is that that was a Union Army recruiting poster showing the black soldiers and a Union officer standing by the side. The photograph was cropped to eliminate the dark clad Union officer. So be careful how and what you read.
Here's what Sam Houston said after he resigned the Texas governorship. "I tell you that, while I believe with you in the doctrine of states rights, the North is determined to preserve this Union. They are not a fiery, impulsive people as you are, for they live in colder climates. But when they begin to move in a given direction, they move with the steady momentum and perseverance of a mighty avalanche; and what I fear is, they will overwhelm the South." The hotheads should have listened to him.
The American Civil War showed how rifles had improved. The advantage was with a sheltered defender. Since the Union forces were generally attacking, they took heavy losses. When Confederates attacked, they took heavy losses.
This idea that blacks fought for the Confederacy is laughable revisionism. There were isolated cases, but the Southern high command specifically rejected the idea because it would disprove their idea that blacks were inferior and incapable of bravery in battle of intelligence. The North did in fact arm hundreds of thousands of blacks. Why can't Southerners admit they have a shameful legacy and learn from it, as the Germans have?
Its funny cause the North did not win because of their tactics, heart in the war they were fighting, and even the common enlisted Federal soldier did not have faith in his commanders or Lincoln. The only reason the North won was just how the Russians beat the Germans in WWII, sheer numbers. Thats it. Gen. U.S. Grant was called Lincolns butcher because he wasted so many men, Sherman would be considered a war criminal in todays books. CSA had hearth, commanders, and tactics. Yankees had numbers.

It had the home field advantage and just had to win long enough to force a political solution in the divided north. The Union had to conquer the entire South to win. The South also had better military leadership, at least at first. You call General Grant a butcher, which is nonsense. Lee was just as much of a butcher.
@PfunkGW Germany in WWII near the end had the homefield advantage too. They didnt win. The south had 8 million people in it, 4 million were slaves. North had I believe upwards of 20 or so million. Yes the South did have chances, but so did the north. The north, if it had chosen a better general early in the war instead of McClellan and McDowell then they could have won the war in a month. Lee sent his men into assaults to win the war, Grant sent his men to the slaughter. Look at the casualties.

My point was that Grant does not deserve his reputation as a butcher because he was no bloodier than other major commanders. He simply wouldnt let Lee go which led to high casualties. The rag tag confederates who barely had good logistics and training held off the Federal army for four years. Yeah, the South sucked all right. Holocaust is horrible, Slaves were bad but only 8% of southerners even owned slaves.

Lee, and Stonewall Jackson, I will have to say the South DID have superior Generals, especially before the battle of Gettysburg. The downturn for the South came with a few reasons, the death of Stonewall Jackson, loss of the Mississippi River, did NOT get European Support, a failing Navy, THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG, but the South was a noble cause. On the tariff causing the Civil War, Lincoln took office in March. By then states had already seceded and had taken over federal property. So Lincoln didn't raise tariffs.
Being from Texas, have you read what Sam Houston thought about joining the Confederacy? The "fire eaters" in the South should have listened to him. The Wikipedia article on him is interesting.

Most people are unaware that one of major issue of the Texas / Mexico war was that Mexico outlawed slavery in 1831 and the the Texas had one year to free their slaves. I was reading about some of the propaganda being fostered on the Internet. Lying seems to be the norm now. Anyway, the 1st Louisiana Regiment, according to the lie, was a Confederate regiment. There's a photograph of black soldiers in light uniforms. However, the real story is that that was a Union Army recruiting poster showing the black soldiers and a Union officer standing by the side. The photograph was cropped to eliminate the dark clad Union officer. So be careful how and what you read.

The American Civil War showed how rifles had improved. The advantage was with a sheltered defender. Since the Union forces were generally attacking, they took heavy losses. When Confederates attacked, they took heavy losses.

This idea that blacks fought for the Confederacy is laughable revisionism. There were isolated cases, but the Southern high command specifically rejected the idea because it would disprove their idea that blacks were inferior and incapable of bravery in battle of intelligence. The North did in fact arm hundreds of thousands of blacks. Why can't Southerners admit they have a shameful legacy and learn from it, as the Germans have?

Its funny cause the North did not win because of their tactics, heart in the war they were fighting, and even the common enlisted Federal soldier did not have faith in his commanders or Lincoln. The only reason the North won was just how the Russians beat the Germans in WWII, sheer numbers. Thats it. Gen. U.S. Grant was called Lincolns butcher because he wasted so many men, Sherman would be considered a war criminal in todays books. CSA had hearth, commanders, and tactics. Yankees had numbers.

@PfunkGW Germany in WWII near the end had the homefield advantage too. They didnt win. The south had 8 million people in it, 4 million were slaves. North had I believe upwards of 20 or so million. Yes the South did have chances, but so did the north. The north, if it had chosen a better general early in the war instead of McClellan and McDowell then they could have won the war in a month. Lee sent his men into assaults to win the war, Grant sent his men to the slaughter. Look at the casualties.

My point was that Grant does not deserve his reputation as a butcher because he was no bloodier than other major commanders. He simply wouldnt let Lee go which led to high casualties. Grant was a great strategists because he coordinated the Union's overall grand strategy that ultimately defeated the SOuths military capacity in 1864 - 65

The rag tag confederates who barely had good logistics and training held off the Federal army for four years. Yeah, the South sucked all right. Holocaust is horrible, Slaves were bad but only 8% of southerners even owned slaves.

Those things helped but ultimately the North won on the battlefield. Southern soldiers were no braver than Northern and Southern commanders frequently screwed up, especially in the west. BTW - in 1860 96% of northerners were farmers and the South was the 4th richest economy in the world. So please stop the lost cause.

Lee, and Stonewall Jackson, I will have to say the South DID have superior Generals, especially before the battle of Gettysburg. The downturn for the South came with a few reasons, the death of Stonewall Jackson, loss of the Mississippi River, did NOT get European Support, a failing Navy, THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG, but the South was a noble cause. HURRAH!

Grant was a brilliant General who launched a textbook campaign at Vicksburg and outgeneraled Lee on several occasion. He also worked closely with Sherman to coordinate several Union campaigns which ultimately defeated the South. Learn some history and don't just repeat what Southern liars say.

On the tariff causing the Civil War, Lincoln took office in March. By then states had already seceded and had taken over federal property. So Lincoln didn't raise tariffs.

@cjnwashere I know a man attending a Chapel in the metro Atlanta area from Minnesota that was awarded a plaque by his children stating he was an HONORARY SOUTHERNER. He was absolutely delighted, and he was very knowledgeable about southern history. You should get such a plaque!
