nerdgasm... I remember the first time I played this game at my friends house, this was the first galaxy, and I think its the best one. I think this game has much more to offer than people give credit to. With a complete orchestral score, unique inovative gameplay, a touching storyline, ... but you know, other people may have different opinions n' stuff...
At 0:50 I suddenly have the urge to almost start crying. This game was my first Wii game (didn't play Wii Sports first) all the way back in 2007. Such a beautiful song.
Wait a second, you almost cried for a game you're feeling nostalgic for "all the way back" in 2007? Lol, you're a kid aren't you? My first game was Super Mario Bros all the way back in the 80's. Now decades is "all the way back", not 5 years. And I never almost cried and felt nostalgic for Super Mario Bros when 1990 rolled around. I just went and played Super Mario Bros 3. Man, kids today, is 5 years really that much to you?
@WanderLink Calm down, yo. People can feel nostalgia for things that happened three years ago, much less five. Nostalgia doesn't have a lower limit. It's an emotion. A subjective one at that.
@Samurott12 Eh, don't listen to that Wanderer, I understand completely what you meant. When I brought out the 64 and started playing OoT after nearly 10 years of not playing it I always started crying from Nostalgia
@SanekULF I get what you're saying. Well, I'm sorry if you couldn't enjoy SMG2 as much as I did, but I guess that's just the two of us looking for different things in the same game. For me, gameplay always come first over storyline and graphics - chances are, a game with great gameplay will be much more memorable to me than a game with great storyline, which is why Yoshi's Island is my favorite SNES game rather than (as much as I enjoyed them) Chrono Trigger or A Link to the Past.
And I always saying that in SMG1 you must play with turned out light and stereo sound. When I started to play in SMG2, I waited something like that. The second game of course has its own atmosphere, but it’s not romantic. It has beauty romantic moments but in whole it’s fun. This faceship, fat Lubba with his jokes, poor prologue and story, right at the beginning Yoshi Star Galaxy with fun music. And in that game there is no mystery. I don’t feel what I felt in SMG1
@DanielLadson The first game have romantic and mysterious atmosphere. All begins with very beautiful prologue and Starbit Festival (latter right at the beginning touched me), than we met Rosalina, and all this with beauty romantic music. Then all game we walking on the big observatory with great cosmic view and waltz on it. All this perfectly combines with mysterious story of Rosalina and Lumas, its disclosing and ending, and I mean not only story in library.
Storyline made first game very more beautiful, especially pleasant.Of course, second game had a great gameplay, very nice presents from the past like Supermassive and Throwback Galaxies, but in compare with fist game in a whole it's degradation. I beat second game once, collected 242 stars and don't returned. But first game attracts me again and again, I'm reaplaying it because of the storyline and it's beautiful atmosphere. And many Mario fans was very glad to see him like that.
@SanekULF Either way, both are great games. I can understand if people like SMG more than SMG2 due to the storyline - although I don't think they should, seeing as how Mario games never really had one, and the Rosalina sotryline in the original is just a sidestory - but heck, to each their own.
Just one question - what do you mean by "beautiful atmosphere"? Because if your're saying SMG2 didn't have that, you're kidding yourself :P
When I came to this Galaxy, I knew I would go for it. Safe Peach, the Mushroom Kingdom... and Rosalina and the Lumas. I knew, too, it would be tough. But when I got the first Power Star, I and my Luma inside me knew it for sure: This would be the greatest adventure in the Universe.
Anyway I can tell I'm pissing more than a few people off with pointless arguments so I'll end off by asking why you think SMG2 "decided to abandon all of that greatness and only focused on making new level designs" when the music and graphics are better than the original. Heck, it even had a bit of a storyline compared to most Mario games (Remember "It is the desire to be reunited with someone dear to you")?
Oh, and just to clarify - I don't hate SMG. I think it's a fantastic game.
Gameplay - THIS is SMG2's trump card over SMG. SMG2 improved on the original Galaxy and offered us much more linear, jumping-intensive levels. And to those who don't like the linear flow of SMG2, I say go play Zelda or Elder Scrolls. Platformers were always supposed to be linear, yet people always associate it with non-linear exploration.
Not to mention the sheer creativity. Remember Chompworks Galaxy? What about Flip Swap? Beat Block? Clockworks?
Graphics - Let's not lie, graphics DO do matter when it comes to games, and anyone who denies that is kidding themselves. That said, it's not the most important component, but it still plays an essential tool to the enjoyment of the game. And SMG2 is slightly more beautiful than the original in terms of looks. Not a whole lot, but a little bit.
In my opinion, you're both right about the games, they were both creative in their own way, they were both beautiful, they both had great music, but most importantly, they were both very, very fun games. And how fun a game is, is all that really should matter
@luvkirby4ever THREE YEARS WAS TOO QUICK TO PLEASE THE FANS?!?!?wtf is wrong with you.........they added NEW power-ups,awesome music, new bosses, new enemies, this you call not cool?oooookay.what kind of sequel game you like?well,i dont know how to answer that.its all up to you to answer that question.
@luvkirby4ever As for your nitpick about more levels in more worlds - well, actually, that's what makes Galaxy 2 MORE of a platformer than the rest. More missions per world means a bigger world, as seen in 64 and Sunshine, and a bigger world means more exploration than jumping, making the game more Action-Adventure than Platformer.
Comparing the two Galaxies, the fact that Galaxy 2 has less missions per galaxy means that it's more varied and nothing ever gets old, which Galaxy 1 suffered from.
@luvkirby4ever Galaxy 2's storyline wasn't lacking at all. Mario's story has ALWAYS been about Peach getting kidnapped, and Mario jumps his way through various obstacles to save her royal ass. If Mario games tried to adopt a deeper storyline it would complicate a genre that isn't meant to be complicated - a PLATFORMER! Heck, even Rosalina's story in Galaxy was just a side story that was completely OPTIONAL.
Wow... there were people who really thought Galaxy 2 sucked?
...Man, sorry if I'm insulting you guys, but you guys have no taste...
Galaxy 1 is definitely the more innovative one, and the music is much more memorable then Galaxy 2. But Galaxy 2 just blew me away with the sheer creativity of the level designs.
The thing I love about the both the Mario Galaxy games is how mesmerizing they are. Sure, both of them do have levels that frustrate the crap out of us, but in levels like this and Gusty Garden with their wonderful music and level design, it just takes all of our bad emotions away and replaces them with calm, happy and magical feelings that make us want to dance with joy. This is why both the Mario Galaxy games have earned special places in our hearts, and will remain there forever =')
sometimes I listen, & I surrender my nerves to the music, completely, I don't even make a whistle, & I let the music flow, as I slowly feel my soul drift off, away from my physical body, completely into this music, this magic that plays my soul
*sniff* The second galaxy game was fun, but it was so much less memorable. It was made too quickly to please the fans. But Super Mario Galaxy... the first one... I still remember the first time I played it. And in this stage, right at 0:56 I was going through one of the Luma stars that sent me flying... I remember that it was so amazing I started crying. It is so beautiful. And the story of Super Mario Galaxy is so beautiful... I will always regard Galaxy 1 as the true Super Mario Galaxy.
@luvkirby4ever Three years was too quick to please the fans? Oooookay. Galaxy 1 might have been more innovative, but the sequel is the TRUE Super Mario Galaxy - it showed gamers ythe beautiful magic of3D Platformers, whether through jumping off appearing and disappearing platforms, rolling as a rock and making precise turns and jumps, or tiles that would switch back and forth if the player chose to add a spin through his jump. The creativity in Galaxy 2 is amazing.
@DanielLadson whats the point of compairing the galaxys? galaxy 2 seems to have some kind of " fan fortres" protecting it from galaxy 1. why do we see SO MUCH CONFLICT as gamers? our pointless mario vs sonic and ps3 vs xbox debates are pathetic whastes of our time. why can't we just play games? why is there windows and mac? so many pointless debate...* restarts song* debates going on in our world? can't we all just live with each other? *sigh* everyone's a critic.
@littlelink942 Yeah, I ment actually that it has more same storyline, because in both games bowser tries to control the universe and make peach to the queen and bowser junior is there and mario has the luma in himself and stuff like that.
@DanielLadson indeed. Lets not forget galaxy 2 is probably one of the first games where you instantly create your own platforms to cross gaps. (cloud mario)
@DanielLadson Agreed. Galaxy 1 may have had the bigger impact, but 2 is easily the better game. Better hub system, 10x more creative, and it was an all round superior game. Also, they orchastrated Bowsers SM64, which is pure win :)
@DanielLadson Video games are about more than just gameplay. Super Mario Galaxy 1, in addition to playing fantastically, had beauty, innovation, a superb balance of everything that makes games great.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 decided to abandon all of that greatness and only focused on making new level designs. Everything else only felt stale or inferior to the original. It's as uncreative and disappointing as sequels get. It's sad to see such a soulless game get glowing reviews.
@PaperMario15 How about we stop comparing the two games and just enjoy them both for what they really are, amazing Mario games. Both of them are outstanding games that deserve all the praise they got. Honestly, this isn't the place to have a comparison contest you know, this is a place to enjoy beautiful music and to get along with others.
Innovation - Yeah, sure, as I mentioned before, there's no denying that SMG2 was heavily influenced by SMG. So what? If a game is good and is equally good as the original (if not better) with new elements added to keep it from essentially being the same game, why are you complaining?
Storyline - Unnecessary. Mario games never had one, and SMG spoiled the fans by introducing a sidestory.
Sound - Subjective. But SMG2 is slightly superior IMO
@PaperMario15 It's not soulless and it's not sad to see it get good reviews! You're just lacking your taste in games. SMG2 was considered the best Wii game of 2010 according to 99% of sites. It's good as SMG.
@luvkirby4ever It makes me happy that your username is Kirby related yet you don't automatically bash anything that isn't Kirby. Thank you for bringing some hope back into this planet. And I definitely agree, the first SMG was the true SMG. The second was still good, but it couldn't beat that feeling of experiencing it for the first time.
@luvkirby4ever I got Galaxy 2 first, and had the same experience in Sky Station. For me, it was beautiful, new and unique, and when I played Galaxy 1, it felt like a drop behind. I could see the places where Galaxy 2 improved and added new and innovative concepts. Cosmic Clones, Spin-Drill mazes, Green Stars, even little touches like the platforms that flip when you spin just to screw you over. Don't hate on Galaxy 2 because it wasn't the first, because it's every bit as good.
@AuraScar It was fun, but disappointing in regards to the storyline. I know it's a Mario game, so more or less the fans don't care anyway, but I just couldn't get into the whole "flying around space with a huge ass purple luma" thing.
The only thing that really bothers me about the actual gameplay is the insanely small amount of levels per world. Sure, that means more worlds, but I like it better like in the previous 3 games how there are quite a few levels in most of the worlds.
@luvkirby4ever your comment actually made me tear up a little since Super Mario Galaxy was the first game i got on my wii and the music was playing on my favorite part as i was reading your comment
The combination of the superb high quality Super Mario games (mainly Galaxy series) and the extremely lovely music is too epic. How can you not love it? Koji Kondo, and all you japaneses, stay. forever. in my heart :)
@sporecreatorperson This game had great music and amazing level designs. The second games music was bland remixes of everything. And the level designs were all based off previous mario games.
@doctorseaweed2 It wasn't even that, to me. It was just tedious to play, to the point that I never even finished it. The hub world got replaced with the horrendous Starship Mario (so little room for exploration), the Yoshi system was poorly implemented and seemed more like an afterthought than anything, and the soundtrack was inferior. The first few pieces of music in the first one really grabbed me - totally unmemorable in Galaxy 2.
The next Super Smash Bros. I want Mario, Pikachu, Link, and Kirby to battle it out on The Good Egg Galaxy, spinning and killing each other on the Yoshi shaped planet!
Gotta love it when this plays right after you get your final grand star and catch Peach in the air... makes getting 240 stars so worth it (120 with Mario, 120 with Luigi, of course)
There's something about a little fat Italian man flying through space with his arms spread that just makes you want to go out into the world see all there is and more.
Attention everyone! Gamespot is having a contest for the all time greatest sidekick! Both Luigi and Yoshi are in this contest. Yoshi is currently losing against his opponent Albert Einstein! I'm asking anyone who sees this to go to Gamespot and vote for Yoshi! I also would appreciate it if everyone would spread this message to all other Yoshi or Mario related videos even if you don't want to vote.

Just epic. And I do not know why but this reminds me of a composition by John Williams.

sometimes I listen, & I surrender my nerves to the music, completely, I don't even make a whistle, & I let the music flow, as I slowly feel my soul drift off, away from my physical body, completely into this music, this magic that plays my soul

I will always regard Galaxy 1 as the true Super Mario Galaxy.
luvkirby4ever 3 months ago 52
@luvkirby4ever I cried too! Still do!
The first game was truly a masterpiece. It's such a shame that the second game didn't live up to it like I wanted it to.
KatziiYataki 3 months ago
@luvkirby4ever Three years was too quick to please the fans? Oooookay. Galaxy 1 might have been more innovative, but the sequel is the TRUE Super Mario Galaxy - it showed gamers ythe beautiful magic of3D Platformers, whether through jumping off appearing and disappearing platforms, rolling as a rock and making precise turns and jumps, or tiles that would switch back and forth if the player chose to add a spin through his jump. The creativity in Galaxy 2 is amazing.
DanielLadson 3 months ago 66
@DanielLadson whats the point of compairing the galaxys? galaxy 2 seems to have some kind of " fan fortres" protecting it from galaxy 1. why do we see SO MUCH CONFLICT as gamers? our pointless mario vs sonic and ps3 vs xbox debates are pathetic whastes of our time. why can't we just play games? why is there windows and mac? so many pointless debate...* restarts song* debates going on in our world? can't we all just live with each other? *sigh* everyone's a critic.

@exkuhpid You're right, the world IS a critic. So glad you realized that :)
DanielLadson 2 months ago
@DanielLadson Yeah, but the story is exagly the same.
jansku300 2 months ago
@jansku300 The story in Mario games are always the same. The princess gets kidnapped and that's how all the platformers have worked.
littlelink942 2 months ago
@littlelink942 Yeah, I ment actually that it has more same storyline, because in both games bowser tries to control the universe and make peach to the queen and bowser junior is there and mario has the luma in himself and stuff like that.
jansku300 2 months ago
@DanielLadson indeed. Lets not forget galaxy 2 is probably one of the first games where you instantly create your own platforms to cross gaps. (cloud mario)
TheBiggamer64 2 months ago
@DanielLadson I still prefer galaxy 2
yoshinintendo1 2 months ago
@DanielLadson Agreed. Galaxy 1 may have had the bigger impact, but 2 is easily the better game. Better hub system, 10x more creative, and it was an all round superior game. Also, they orchastrated Bowsers SM64, which is pure win :)
reservoirdog666 2 months ago 3
@DanielLadson Video games are about more than just gameplay. Super Mario Galaxy 1, in addition to playing fantastically, had beauty, innovation, a superb balance of everything that makes games great.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 decided to abandon all of that greatness and only focused on making new level designs. Everything else only felt stale or inferior to the original. It's as uncreative and disappointing as sequels get. It's sad to see such a soulless game get glowing reviews.
PaperMario15 1 month ago
@PaperMario15 How about we stop comparing the two games and just enjoy them both for what they really are, amazing Mario games. Both of them are outstanding games that deserve all the praise they got. Honestly, this isn't the place to have a comparison contest you know, this is a place to enjoy beautiful music and to get along with others.
MrMarioBack 1 month ago 7
@PaperMario15
DanielLadson 1 month ago
@PaperMario15 It's not soulless and it's not sad to see it get good reviews! You're just lacking your taste in games. SMG2 was considered the best Wii game of 2010 according to 99% of sites. It's good as SMG.

@luvkirby4ever It makes me happy that your username is Kirby related yet you don't automatically bash anything that isn't Kirby. Thank you for bringing some hope back into this planet. And I definitely agree, the first SMG was the true SMG. The second was still good, but it couldn't beat that feeling of experiencing it for the first time.
Xytiso 3 months ago
@luvkirby4ever I got Galaxy 2 first, and had the same experience in Sky Station. For me, it was beautiful, new and unique, and when I played Galaxy 1, it felt like a drop behind. I could see the places where Galaxy 2 improved and added new and innovative concepts. Cosmic Clones, Spin-Drill mazes, Green Stars, even little touches like the platforms that flip when you spin just to screw you over. Don't hate on Galaxy 2 because it wasn't the first, because it's every bit as good.

@Jelloratbob Exact Words.
I think it's the experience that determines our opinions on games. Really.

@luvkirby4ever..... "It was made too quickly to please the fans."..........
......and were the fans not pleased?
AuraScar 3 months ago in playlist Mario music
@AuraScar It was fun, but disappointing in regards to the storyline. I know it's a Mario game, so more or less the fans don't care anyway, but I just couldn't get into the whole "flying around space with a huge ass purple luma" thing.
The only thing that really bothers me about the actual gameplay is the insanely small amount of levels per world. Sure, that means more worlds, but I like it better like in the previous 3 games how there are quite a few levels in most of the worlds.
luvkirby4ever 2 months ago
@luvkirby4ever God dammit, you gave me that fuzzy feeling, now I have to delete my game then re-beat 100% with both Mario and Luigi

@FOXGotMeBanned
I didn't mean to hate. I'm just saying that Rosalina's story is way more touching than a story about flying around in space with an obese Luma.
Besides, I said the second game was fun didn't I? The storyline was seriously lacking, even for a Mario game, which doesn't require much.

@doctorseaweed2 I totally agree with you. I just couldn't find the charm in it that the first one had. But I appear to be in a miniscule minority.
KatziiYataki 3 months ago
@KatziiYataki SMG2 just felt like a rip-off of other mario games to me...
doctorseaweed2 3 months ago
@doctorseaweed2 It wasn't even that, to me. It was just tedious to play, to the point that I never even finished it. The hub world got replaced with the horrendous Starship Mario (so little room for exploration), the Yoshi system was poorly implemented and seemed more like an afterthought than anything, and the soundtrack was inferior. The first few pieces of music in the first one really grabbed me - totally unmemorable in Galaxy 2.
