Yeah, he really brought out the best in Mary Jo Kopechne. If he'd have done that today he would be charged with vehicular homicide. He'd also have to be a Republican.
This just goes to show you all that the hate in this country doesn't seem to exist in the halls of congress. They do their bussiness but form unbelievable friendships.
sadly-that is more old-school. Now the vitriol and grandstanding and divisiveness are more commonplace on the Hill. It does seem Kennedy brought out the best on so many people.
I hope Senator Hatch honors Ted Kennedy and their friendship by getting behind Healthcare Reform with a strong public option. The Edward Kennedy Healthcare Reform Bill.
I don't want Hatch to vote based on sentiment or political affiliation. I want him vote on what he believes is best for his constituents.
I am not so jaded that an honest, intelligent argument can't persuade me. I haven't heard one when it comes to a public option. I'm waiting for someone to who opposes this part of the HC bill to engage me and try to convince me.
If you think all Republicans are voting their "true conscience" by voting against Healthcare Reform you are mistaken. Many are doing it for purely political reasons, in fact, I've heard it from a couple Democratic Congressmen that they have had Republicans come up to them and say they are 'sorry' they can't vote for it but they have to vote the party line. THAT is despicable in my opinion.
What I can't understand is why the Republicans don't show this side of themselves more often. I am a proud progressive, but I don't understand why the Republicans continue to depend on vitriol and fear to get elected and show a bit more of their humanity.
It is nice to see the curtain pulled back on the political theatre that is Washington D.C.. Perhaps if our Congress had the courage to leave the curtain a little more open. Partisanship in our great country wouldn't be in it's current state. Thank you Senator Hatch for how ever brief to allow us to see that there is hope for a less contentious world.
I agree with you, but to be honest, it is not just about 'pulling back the curtain', it is about the GOP USING divisive tactics in order to PROMOTE division and a contentious atmosphere in this country.

Senator Orrin Hatch you are a disgrace to the memory of Ted Kennedy for stalling the extended unemployment bill for 6 million unemployed!
Senator Orrin Hatch, R-UT, quoted as saying that he was ""irritated" at the flack his party is receiving from the unemployed who are without income.
Truly failure of government at a time of its citizens' highest need.

@deldelgary They should have dumped Ted's ass in the tidal channel of Chappaquiddick Island.
