  • jesus fucking christ, people cant fuckin stop worrying about who is right and wrong for 5 seconds and actually appreciate music. what the fuck does it matter if trent or johnny wrote the fucking song?! its beautiful music either way

  • wow... thats the truth!!! the one and only..!

  • I hurt myself today

    Because I thought something bad

  • I must also point out that this is a Nine Inch Nails song.

  • NIN wrote it but REZNOR said Cash made it

  • @thebishopofme Really? I thought Cash ruined it! And I love Johnny....

  • haha, I like how it's considered a cover of a cover. but this does sound a hell of a lot more like the original... the way it's spaced out.

  • This is kind of more like the Nin version.

  • Definitely based on the Nine Inch Nails Original.

  • @OhMyGodSANDWICH Lollollol And Thancs!

  • this song is in a league of its own

  • the test of a great song is that it is great no matter who sings it

  • On the whole NIN vs Cash version debate. I think the arrangement is far closer to NIN version, especially the 'almost out of tune piano' sound that makes NIN version quite uncomfortable on the ear.

I think the 'crown of thorns' line may be used as a sort of radio edit and more in fitting with the gregorian style than a direct nod to Cash.

In saying that, I think without Cash's version there wouldn't have been this version simply down to the exposure Cash's version brought.

  • I like the metaphore of the statue (hurt) and reality of (hurt). Nice!

  • I'm not gonna take sides over who's 'better', but this arrangement obviously takes more after the NIN version than after Cash.

  • yea it sides more with NIN, but truth be told you can't side with cash or NIN, two different artists with different sounds; music is mostly based on emotional state so sometimes one version is more appealing to you than the other, and other times vice versa =), thats only my oppinion of course though, i`ve had that experience with a hand full of original songs and their covers.

  • the sound quality is terrible in this one

  • Original version is not from J. Cash it is Nine Inch Nails' actually.

However, this is the best song in "The Dark Side"

  • With almost every song of Gregorian found on YouTube, I see comments stating the song from Gregorian is either 'better' or 'worse' than the original is.

But neither is really true, actually.

Gregorian never meant to really challenge the original songs, so, the Gregorian versions are not 'better' or 'worse', only different. It's a personal opinion to either like or dislike it, but it's different from 'better' or 'worse'.

    Just think about that.

    Besides: this song is...

    Heartbreaking beautifull..

  • I agree...wise words

  • This is not a Johnny Cash song it's NIN ,Trent Reznor. Whatever it's imtense I'm so into Gregorian- thank you.

  • @DaarkRedeemer NIN covered it and I heard that long before I heard Johnny Cash singing it but I believe it was originally his song.

  • @zodiakranch No, they did not cover it. Trent Reznor wrote Hurt's lyrics at the least and Nine Inch Nails performed it. Johnny Cash covered it later because reportedly he felt it had a lot to do with his life and past experience. As I say, reportedly, not stating any facts here other than that Nine Inch Nails wrote this, not Cash. Yes the man is dead, yes he was very old when he covered it, but he DID cover it.

  • @Tarresan I had actually decided to look it up after I posted but then I couldn't fugure out how to remove my comment. You are correct that Johnny Cash covered it. And yes he must have been very old because he has been dead for quite a while now. Live and learn...

  • @zodiakranch Johhny Cash made his version after his wife died, it was the last song released by Johnny when he was alive

  • @prameszy

Actually, if you watch the Cash version of the Video, his wife was in it. She died a couple of months AFTER the video was shot, but prior to it being aired. And, it was not the last song Cash recorded, as it was not the last song he recorded for that album. It was, however, on the last album he recorded.

    Yay for Pop-up Video!

  • @zodiakranch It's the original song from NIN, Cash did the cover.

  • @DaarkRedeemer No, it's most certainly a Johnny Cash song. There's physical evidence of that. However, NIN *did* actually create the song. Cash just made it his own with that heart-breaking version of his. I prefer Cash's over NIN.

  • @DaarkRedeemer the title does not say it is a Johnny Cash song it says it is the Johnny cash version of the song. we all know the original song is from NiN, but you clearly did not know that there is a Johnny Cash version of it as well :-)

  • Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) wrote this song, and NOT Johnny Cash ..

    All credit goes to Reznor.

  • Except Reznor himself said Cash's version was better, so, there's that.

  • Source?

  • Source? The source that Reznor said it was better was Trent Reznor. I believe I said that. Let me check....yep, I already said that

  • I can see you don't know what source means.

Can you prove that he said that?

  • And I can see you take every opporitunity to be a pretentious douche. Of course I know what source means. But yeah, sure, I'm having lunch with Trent next tomorrow, would you like to come and hear him say it? How in the hell do you 'prove' anyone said anything? I find a website saying he said it, you find one saying he didn't, it's a friggin comment page, assbag, not a news article.

  • haha well said

  • Except that he didnt.

"still retains sincerity and meaning — different, but every bit as pure."

Those are the exact words used. Nothing about it being better. Never heard the word different used as better... hmmm.

Let me check.... yep you're an idiot making up shit on the internet trying to sound right.

Let me check....yep credit still goes to Reznor for making a masterpiece, Iowa already said that

  • Just for reference: This song can be found on the Gregorian - Dark Side CD.

If you like it, then support it and buy the CD!!!

  • If all of you think that the Gregorian style is only for masses of monastery. ALL OF YOU ARE WRONG. After you heard any masterpieces of the Gregorian I challenge that you will change your mind and you will see what is the diference and the new version of the3 Gregorian are better than the original versions.

  • The gregorian style of this song is better than the original version. No excuses and everybody of the world agreed that the new style made by The Gregorian are better thatn the original versions.

  • quite stupid argument..

    Trent Reznor wrote it..

and he deserves all the honors for the song..

Cash made an awesome version indeed, but the song is Reznor´s masterpiece..

it's hard to accept, since Cash was such a talented artist.. it's hard to even consider him covering an alternative band..

Respect to both, Reznor and Cash

  • Johnny Cash owns this song so much that every cover is refered to as a cover of his version, on wikipedia at least.

Great song, written by Trent Reznor. Covers may be inspired by Johnny Cash, but I take issue with the idea that a band can "cover" a cover of a song, unless that version is radically different, in a different key with a different arrangement, rewritten lyrics, otherwise its a cover of the trent Reznor version.

LOVE the Johnny Cash version though. This one meh...

  • Nonsense. Total nonsense.

  • well, this is definitely a cover of the trent reznor of nine inch nails version. johnny cash's is a different key, different feel, vocal technique and tempo. so you CAN cover johnny cashs version or trent reznors version.

  • but ultimately you are covering a trent-reznor SONG. I love the Johnny Cash version, but give credit where credit is due.

I think I just got caught up in a bad case of semantics.

  • Not true. Johnny Cash released a superior version. It's his now.

  • Johnny Cash = awesome cover.

Trent Reznor = wrote the song

  • you are so wrong. My mind is appalled to the point it can't even come up with an arguement...so I'll just say. "You Fail"

  • All I'm saying is, Trent Reznor made a good song. Johnny Cash made an amazing song.

I also believe that Jimi Hendrix owns "All Along The Watchtower" (which even Bob Dylan admits to) and Santana own Black Magic Woman.

This is my belief. So sue me.

  • sorry to burst your bubble but this is cash's version of it if you listen at 2:50 you will hear them sing i wear this crown of thorns upon my liars chair unlike trent's version which clearly says i wear this crown of shit upon my liars chair so sorry but this is cash's version

  • @thesmogmankills

Do you actually expect them to say Shit?

Other than the one line there is no resemblance to the Cash cover.

  • to daedolon sorry but youre dumber than dogshit ...do you think this is trent's version? no it is neither version it is its own version but it is remade from johnny cash's version loosely ...if you wanna fight semantics and say its someones remake its cash's remake

  • @thesmogmankills

yes, the use of dissonance was clearly taken from Cashes as well as the vocal melodies, so very much taken from the Cash version...

It's clear you have no idea what you're talking about so please put away your fanaticism and just enjoy the song.

  • what the fuck are you babbling about?originally i said it was cash's version and you said i was wrong now u agree it is his make up your ignorant mind... and ps just because you attempt to o use big words doesnt make you any less ignorant...my statement was the usage of this song was from cash's version if you learned to read correctly you would see that so kindly shut the hell up jackass b4 you show your true brainless self for who you are

  • @thesmogmankills

I guess sarcasm is too difficult for you to grasp.

    Anyway, I'm done.

  • sarcasm is different from ignorance if youre going to try to be sarcastic at least do it with some sense of wit dumbass ignorance does not equate sarcasm

  • agreed with ya mate

  • this is oddly awesome

  • Awesome Sound!
