Is there anything cooler than being in a jazz band? Look at them just chilling and then casually start playing this unbelievable music. Although Charlie was a little off pitch still sounds great.
@matoflash Of course he heard it!!! Charlie Rouse was a Master. That's the way it was supposed to be! Go with the 'down home flow' and just 'Dig It'! Everybody looking for some polished shit. But.....this is the 'Real Deal'...old tyme like it was... in the real old days..when evyone din;t have no fine an' fancy instruments...They plaayed wit what they had ... this represents that sound ...down & dirty! Dig It!!! ??? ( don't be so 'square' man) lol
I can't do anything but agree with you FrikandelFanatic! You definitely know what are you talkin' about, btw do you known if exists any bootleg of Thelonious live in Lecco?
A sad commentary on our culture: Justin Beaver and that other loser, LeBron James, get over 500 MILLION hits and this Monk classic will be lucky to ever break 100,000
Line-up is Monk, Charlie Rouse on sax, Ben Riley, drums & Larry Gales, bass...Rouse and Monk sound out of tune at the beginning, or maybe Rouse was out of tune...Rouse had probably started to get tired of Monk's nonsense by this point.
APOLOGIES-this IS a Polish TV performance. I went back to my Monk jazz bio and he did play in Warsaw during the '66 European tour. The group also went to Japan following the European dates. FYI-Paris, Caen, Lyon, Nantes, Amiens, Geneva, Bern, Zürich, Lugano, Basel, Lecco ( northern Italy), Brussels and Warshaw - Oslo, Stockholm and Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, London, Birmingham and Manchester.
@7777Scion Hey Dude, I appreciate your detailed description about the good old Monk's performance, but for Jazz people ain't necessary to explain where Lecco is, if you love Jazz you gotta know where Lecco is.......
@Greengrassmusic not outside of central Europe, no - mention Lecco in a jazz/blues club in NYC or Chicago, and you'll likely only get a blank stare ... Jazz is American music, and European jazz musicians/composers - often quite good, by the way - are not home to the true capitols of Jazz, which are in America. Biographies are written so that such information can be noted to those without knowledge of a non-metropolis in Italy ....
@7777Scion hey buddy, thanks for sharing it, if I may add on top, quite good grammar, but a part from that :A) have you seriously tried on saying out loud ''Lecco'' in LA, NY or SF B/J clubs and waited for their reaction? B) thanks God I have been in Lecco a few times in my life already, BTW always visiting Rigamonti Ceppi's stadium, and I clearly heard Jazz music over there and C) the account Greengrassmusic knows what he is talking about D) :)
@vitoantonioliuzzi Thanks guys to post such an interesting topic! Lecco is indeed a well recognized city for Jazz, ask yourself this question: If Thelonious Monk goes to Lecco... it must be a reason.... I don't know much about USA but I can absolutely tell you that here in Amsterdam you can walk into any Jazz Club and if you say it loud "Lecco" you definitely catch the attention of people, for a Jazz musician Lecco ain't just a city, you gotta go to Lecco man and see it yourself.....
@vitoantonioliuzzi hey folks, I just read this conversation and I felt like to say my opion, Enrico Rava (one of the best italian trumpet player) played few years ago a homage to Miles Davis, I think 2 years after his death, with his quartet they played some classics as "Stella by Starlight" and the wonderful "My Funny Valentine" which Miles recorded in the fifties, this homage to the King Davis did not happened in NY, or Paris or Vienna but in LECCO! Check it on the web if you don't believe me
@russellroom hey buddy! sorry for late reply, but i was just checking out the magic shirt.. what a damn nice apparel.. I was dreaming about wearing it during next lecco jazz festival.. have a look at Joe Venuti story, just google it and put Lecco..I never learnt so much..maybe @7777shon should have a look.. btw, talking about the new gear, did you hear about Ameth Fall case? aclecco dot it.. unbelievable! what without Fall next season?
@vitoantonioliuzzi Joe Venuti is the man, Lecco is the city, no doubts about that! I gotta search new tunes of Joe right now! I wish he and Thelonious could have met, they probably had written some of the most amazing pieces in jazz but in music in general, they have a lot of things in common, first of all their love and respect for the city of Lecco itself!
@russellroom Joe Venuti (born as Giuseppe) was an amazing violinist, in Lecco there should be a street with his name, amazing man as amazing was his music, you should all hunt the web to find his sessions with pianist BUBBA KOLB, perfect sunday morning music.
@Greengrassmusic hey! I has a look and it's true! another confirmation of Lecco role as capital of Jazz world! Bubba Kolb is a new discovery for me, really skilled dude! thanks for the track and new inspiration!
Sorry for such a late reply.. apparently there's a little misunderstanding in between federation and club, but they are trying to solve it with diplomacy. as you may know the case is quite sensitive and next A.C. Lecco season is predict to be full of victory, therefore Ameth would like to take part of it. Now A.C. Lecco is going to announce new football player and asap i'll post them on this page all the new stars moving to the city of Jazz..
@russellroom hey man! new fresh updates on Ameth Fall case.. I was browsing acleccoDOTit, as I do every morning while having my coffee and french fries and here's the latest update: the court (2) of Rimini established that the first court sentenced wrongly and Ameth can get the card, but another court still has to give the final approve. I wouldn't like to be that judge man, i can't imagine the pressure he got. Ameth case is tricky man. now just let's hope.
@Astukart Stan Getz recorded in Poland (Polish National Philharmonic in Warsaw) in 1960, bloody cold war or not... Monk in Oslo is already on YT and they're very different videos. This is a Polish TV station, and Polish-language credits. So when someone asserts this is Oslo lol I want evidence.
Monk was great but stoned or not how could you put up with a guy that plays so out of tune. This is not the first time that Rouse played out of tune as there are a few major Monk albums where the producers let this go by. Must have been hell at times doing a session with Monk as witnessed by Teo Mecero who produced some of the great jazz records for Columbia. But having said this, some of my most favourite compositions come from Monk. Pure genius......
@billroue being out of tune was part of his style. I personally dig it a lot. a lot of other musicians do that too, Jackie Mclean plays sharp a lot of the time, and i feel like even monk himself incorporated banging the shit out of out of tune pianos into his style.
@seerskater I can see doing this for effect but not nearly on a constant basis, although Jackie Mclean was instantly recognizable not mainly by nis style but playing out of tune . I don't think he meant to play out of tune because I've heard the odd album when he did play in tune, As forThelonious, nobody could figure him out except to say he was a genius especially his writing. I love Fred Hersch's album playing Monk's stuff. witout a doubt, Monk influenced many of todays greats.
Monk knew he was a bad motherfucker! Dig his solo as about the 5:16 mark! He starts cooking and his whole body seems to be pounding out the notes. His splayed fingers seem to sometimes not know exactly where to go next but he always hits the right keys at just the right time. That cat was the living end when it came to jazz piano and composition!
@dopemcee Or maybe, just maybe, the family guy theme borrows a bit from this. Nah, couldn't be. It's not like it came around 40 years later or anything.
I am, indeed, not that dumb. Hence the capitalization, punctuation, and sarcasm. I just found it hard to believe someone could be uncultured and lame enough to be reminded in any way of "Family Guy" by Monk.
Oh yeah. The "But where are all those good ol' family values" part. The chord progression used there is a very common jazz progression. Yeah, I realized the same thing.
Then again, cartoons like Family Guy and The Critic use traditional jazz progressions in their main themes.
All good jazz is wank in some way. When you get down on your instrument and start playing, you think to yourself "Hey, this sounds good!". You like it, it's all from your own perspective. You're probably not thinking "The audience will love that". Unless you're a punk (not the good kind). Then again, some people are dicks and say "I'm gonna play this 'cause I'm sure it'll piss them off."
