This was a case of the escalator being overloaded and stopping.

There was nothing wrong with the escalator, it acted correctly.

What did happen was a bunch of people got trampled.

@YawFuthaMucka Hey for your information, that BIG RED BUTTON your talking about is to stop the power supply so that escalator will stop. This accident happened due to capacity overload (measures by "person per minute"), that BUTTON won't do anything good for this kind of situation.

Some manufactures do have brake system integrated with the emergency stop, but even if they had, with my experience I would say it won't do much better either. Just look at how many people there were.
