they weren't militants they were University students. 2 failed coups were orchestrated from the American embassy, and the leaders asked for the Shah to be returned but US refused, so Iranian students stormed the embassy and took hostages and explained that they will release the hostages if US returned Shah to face trial for killing 70,000 Iranians.
