From an lawyer website: Case: Defendant dentist severed the lingual nerve on both sides of plaintiff's mouth while removing her lower partially impacted wisdom teeth. Plaintiff was left with difficulty in speaking and no sensation on most of her tongue, the floor of her mouth, and the inside of her gums. Plaintiff cannot ascertain what she is eating and has to sprinkle broken potato chips on her food so that she can hear when to swallow. Jury Verdict: $325,000.00
A followup to my suggestion of tardive dyskinesia - it might be that the wisdom tooth extraction is a "red herring", and that your condition was triggered by a medication taken at around the same time as the extraction. Try to recall, or obtain medical/dental/pharmacy records of all the medications you took either as prescription or were given at the oral surgeon's office, and take that list with you to your next neurologist appointment.
Oh, Well it's really all up to you man. I'm not saying marijuana will cure it but if you are trying to find anything else besides Ambien my personal opinion will be marijuana. Taking a trip to another state would be worth it in my eyes if i had already spent so much money. But who am i right?
I'm not a medical genius and I'm far from it but I think the ambien relaxes your muscles enabling you to speak more clearly. This is going to sound bad but have you experimented with other sleeping aids? Or some kind of muscle relaxant?
I find your story remarkable and I hope you find out what's wrong. Best wishes.
@OwlheartXx Hey Owl-it's weird that is seems to take all the tension out of my shoulders, neck, face, etc. Muscle relaxers don't quite have the same effect. It's just weird. Thanks for the good wishes. Have a great weekend! Tom
Would a muscle relaxant pill help? You can still do voice over work I think... You can apply for a job, send them an example of you speaking, and, prior to the voice over job, take a heavy dose of Ambien.
@winner24AI No I take a muscle relaxer for my back issues (old issues). We tried that once, but the vocal abilities just weren't professional enough. Good idea though! Thanks-Tom
@jeanniew888 I have tried acupuncture by a true master. We had very limited results. I could speak clearly for literally 1-2 minutes after. It was fantastic for overall relaxation though. I saw an acupuncturist near Asheville, NC.
@peterjohns84 Hi I'm posting all comments except for spam. I think conversion diagnosis doesn't acknowledge the very real numbness, slurring and tmj problems that developed either immediately or within 2 months after the tooth extraction. I even saw a psychiatrist and discussed things. He advised I see another Neurologist which I'm doing next week. Thanks for writing and hey...whatever works, I'm all for it! Cheers-Tom
@peterjohns84 WHy do you say I'm not posting comments about conversion disorder? I published your comment. I'm only rejecting porn and spam. Back up your accusations before you make them especially since i've been posting your comments. Thanks!
What I want to know is why are we as people so ready to write someone off. Just because you may or may not believe that fact that he does indeed have a problem. He is coming to Youtube for help not for people to feel sorry for him and have a comeback career.
@Missbrita Thanks for that. You know I've 98% positive emails and comments. I can see how someone might think I'm "poor me"ing or making this some sort of scam. (My voiceover career will return if it's meant to be. I don't need a scam for that.) That's why I included a link in the vid to a current video of me speaking now. The amount of positive energy, compassion and goodness coming my way has been stunning and life changing. I'm just a person asking for help. Thanks for your kindness-Tom
Dear Thomas Rohe, I work for a Dr. Duane Keller here in St. Louis MO. I shared your story with him. I believe he can help you! He says he would need to see you in person. Here is a little about Dr. Keller: He has invented and patented the Perio Protect method of treating periodontal disease and gingivitis. Dr. Keller also is the inventor of TMJ Orthodontics and specializes in non-surgical TMJ and chronic pain treatment. I have to make this a 2 part post.... Please read next post for contact #

Ambien works on the neurotransmitter thatinhibts the "work" of neurons, slowing certain parts of the brain which are responsible for processing thoughts. (This is why it works on people who have more stress related issues for insomnia). Evidently if it works to bring your speech back its paralyzing a "crossed wire" in the parallel pathways between the lower-highers functioning neural pathways; somewhere in ur brains your speech processes-to-muscle actualization aren't "communicating".
@DreamingInsomnia How do we untangle those pathways? A swift blow to the head? lol I have to joke about all this cause otherwise it's crying in the pillow kind of stuff and that just makes for a soggy pillow. It'll make for a heck of a story when it gets fixed. I believe it will be. Thanks for jumping in! Tom
@paintinbiker lol Humor is good. The main thing, though neuro isn't my specialty mind you, is finding out if your normal speech-to-actualization pathways are damaged(the ambien paralyzes them, forcing the brain to reroute the signals resulting clarity of speech)or if the brain is confused and trying to use the wrong pathways(those pathways get paralyzed, the brain reroutes).I favor the 1st scenario, talk to your neuro. Its where I'd be looking, again though neuro isn't my specialty.
I used to have TMJ myself. I had all kinds of jaw, throat, and neck pain, loud crackling when I chewed. and bad headaches because of it. My doctor prescribed apo-amitriptyline taken nightly, as it made you drowsy. It is commonly prescribed for TMJ. There may be a correlation with what you are taking, as it makes you sleepy too. Anyhow, it eventually cured me of it. Over time my jaw stopped being so strong and relaxed. I think the dentist injured your jaw, you may need physiotherapy too.
It was quite a positive change in your speaking when you utilized Ambien. I would discourage the use of sign language, and adjust your speech rate and latency or the amount of time paused between each spoken word. An expert speech language pathologist
could help you adjust them so that while you are finding answers, you could still be speaking with clarity.
@markittleman Hi Mark- Thanks for writing. I've tried the paced out, latency speech technique, but the word (mouth) formations are still the same. I just don't have the muscle control. I think the sign language is a positive "crutch" at this point and also a positive in general since I can communicate, very basically, with members of the Deaf community. I know I will need speech therapy once we've got the muscle control down. Thanks for the note Mark.
My husband's speech is severely impaired due to a severe traumatic brain injury. He receives Myobloc (i.e. Botox) injections in his facial/jaw muscles but not for speech. It is hit or miss. Another option may be anti-spasmodic medicines, such as Baclofen. Reach out to Dr. Ross Zafonte, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Harvard Medical School. He helped my husband in Pittsburgh. Another doctor to check out, Dr. Michael Munin, UPMC.
@ShutYourMouthBiotch well it kinda proved that it made a dramatic difference in my speaking ability. The goal here wasn't to prove something about ambien, but to find some help for the overall condition.
Do you have any numbness? From my estimation you're having spasticticty in the muscles to your tongue and maybe some of the muscles involved in jaw movement. Do you have any problems eating? Swallowing? The problem with your voice may be linked to a different set of nerves that wouldn't be affected by surgery on your 3rd molar.
@duddits2k7 Hey Duddits! (Watch out for Mr. Grey! ;-) ) I do have numbness on my lip still. Same place since tooth was pulled. Do have trouble chewing at the end of the day. Swallowing seems ok overall.
Tom, keep your head up man. I had a botched wisdom-teeth surgery from the dentist myself, but nowhere near your scope (nerve damage to the lower-right jaw..still some numbness after almost 7years). I did some moves to strengthen my jaw by clenching my teeth with a mouthpiece, and improve some circulation by taking some root-extract. Hope this helps somehow. Wish you luck.
This is just amazing, congrats to you for finding a weird cure. I was diagnosed with a skin condition called vitiligo about two years ago, that there is not yet a cure for. I hope one day i can take a dose of unaffiliated medication and see my skin go back to normal! Best of luck to you!
Has your doctors checked for any signs of nerve damage, such as a pinched nerve or any other damage around the areas of where your wisdom teeth were removed. If there is any, a medicine such as Ambien could cause the damaged nerves to relax and temporarily help your speech problem. I wish you the best of luck to finding a correct solution to your problem.
After reading the story on the Yahoo web site, and the one doctor's theory that it may be muscle spasms, I have the following suggestion. Try taking Magnesium. I have Fibromyalgia and Magnesium helps tremendously with my muscle spasms. And after watching quite a number of "Untold Stories of the E.R", I have found out that a liquid Magnesium is given in ER's to people who are having major muscle spasms. Won't hurt, and might help, and it's only a trip to the Health Food store.
Oh man I feel so bad for you. I was just reading on Yahoo about that 17yr old girl that died while having her wisdom teeth pulled. Towards the bottom of the article it was talking about the other problems that happen and it stated that what you have, happens to 10k people each year. It also said that broken jaws are common.
I used to take Ambien too but I would wake up naked on the floor and have sex with my wife with no memory at all. That is some wicked stuff but it helps so good for you.
@paulyshore98 LOLOL at least it with your WIFE! LOL I've learned to stay away from online shopping sites if I've had Ambien and not gone to bed. I read that too and other horror stories. You just never know. Thanks Pauly!
Well as long as you have some spare ambien the only good suggestion I have is find those clients you used to have, and do your voice acting during Ambiens effects. I don't know how much money you had stored up but from the sound of things its not gonna last forever. What I would do is talk to some of your old clients on the phone, tell them your name, and listen to their disbelief.
@honkernoodles2 We've tried "drugging" me up. I just can't get the professional enunciation out. I sound real happy lol but just not pro voiceover level. I wish I saved. I'm 52 and I can still hear my father's voice..."Save your money!"...You just wouldn't think one day I'd lose my voice. I figure I can start that middle aged fat guy modeling gig soon.
@NorthMom2015 Howdy Doc! Thanks for writing. I have had MINIMAL testing. Just simple reflex tests..."is this sharp or dull...can u feel this..." that sort of thing. I'm seeing another Neurologist on Monday and hope to get a more thorough battery of tests done. I've read about TD on my own and wondered if applicable to my situation. I'll let you know. Thanks for writing! Tom
I think the reason why people can't believe your condition is because it's not a physical problem, it's a psychological problem... or at least not a known disorder.
It's like having tourettes. I've had similar spasms in the past but not this severe, just a little bit of slurs that ends up making want to repeat myself. Although I wouldn't say the condition is nearly the same.
I am not a doctor, just giving my thought out.
Maybe it's just a coincidence that having your wisdom teeth pulled out.
@PimpMatt0 Might be, but all happened with the extraction. At least the chronology of it all indicates that. There's a video of me one month prior to the extraction on here and you can see I'm yapping normally about the Baxley motorcycle trailer. Thanks for taking the time to write. I am not a doctor...but I have played one on radio commercials! ;-) Tom
How about posting a detailed list of medications, techniques, specialists, etc., that you've tried and any effect they've had. Also, any other symptoms or conditions (whether you think they're related or not) that you've had in the past or have at present. With the limited info, the only thing I suggest is you keep trying neurologists, speech-language pathologists, and physical therapists (specializing in TMJ and/or neuro).
@misterpink95 You know what's weird....if I yawn I can speak! Even now on the worst days. If I yawn my resonance and full voice are there. I don't get it.
@paintinbiker When you yawn. That's the key then Tom, because in that position, the nerve is freed (not a doctor, just a cat rescuer), but seems to make sense to me. You are opening your mouth wide, in a yawn. You will get your voice back. There's impingement of the nerve somewhere. I'm betting on the 12th cranial nerve, a branch thereof.
Tom, have you had any other dental work? Is it possible that youve been "poisoned" by amalgam cavity fillings? I know of someone who was dealing with extreme health concerns related to her dental fillings. Once they were removed, her health improved drastically within a month or so. She was battling extreme fatigue, digestive issues, thyroid related problems, etc. Chronic toxicity related to mercury vapors is a possibility. Please look into this.
WOWWWWWWWWWWW I'm so AMAZED by your voice over work,,,,,it's almost supernatural,,,,,I really hope somebody, a genuine caring professional out there, will resolve your situation as soon as possible because I want to continue listening to your work! But really, in doing so, this could hopefully incite the medical community to be more engaging, enthusiastic, and non callous about taking challenges such as your case....I really hope for your recovery!
@KOSMOS390 Thanks KOSMO! I loved doing lots of different voices. It's a trip cause I had such control over my voice. I've had excellent care from Ed Reilly at Fairview Chiropractic and Seth Fibraio at Cornerstone Physical Therapy in Asheville. My doc has been doing her best trying to find answers for me. What I've been hoping for is a CURIOUS Neurologist who wants a challenge. Heck, I'll even do a free phone message for em! ;-) Thanks again-Tom
I have to say that the "r" caught my attention too but that doesn't mean this is fake or he is faking! So many self proclaimed experts in this field I guess, to bad they can't help a guy out. Oh and btw experts, if he was looking to file a lawsuit he would be talking to a Lawyer, not putting videos on youtube. Not so smart now are ya ? I have a dislocated shoulder and I still work, does this mean that everyone that suffers more pain than I do and can't work is faking too? Shame on you trolls
Holy cow. I remember some of your voicework! Such a shame this disability has happened to you. I'm in school to be a physical therapist, but I can't think of any way I could help. Seems like what you need is a Neurologist and a Biochemist. Wish there was something I could do. Hope you find the help you're looking for. Good luck and hang in there.
@Sandbag2point0 I KNOW!! WHUT THE ___?!!!! Thanks to my friend and voice talent Sharon Feingold for spreading the word for me. I was on the road and my business partner called me and said someone called her to tell her about it. ME???? lol I can't believe it.
I really hope that you find what you're looking for, as it seems like you're a great person who deserves better than the condition you're afflicted with at the moment. As I'm not in a position to help you at this moment, all I can do is to wish you the best in your search for a cure. If I ever happen to meet anyone who can help you out, I'll definitely make it a point to contact you about it.
This is really inspiring. You're a brave man and you seem so normal. I feel like if I've gone through that, I would never be able to recover emotionally. I have TMJ too, so I'm really familiar with the popping, clicking, ringing in the ear, headaches, and jaw discomfort. But I can't even imagine it advancing to something like this. I really hope somebody helps you. You deserve to speak, just like all humans.
@Chii24 Thanks, I'm sorry bout your TMJ issues. I know some people have it very bad. Thanks, I don't feel very brave, I just got fed up one day trying to talk on the phone to American Express and thought my god how can I get this thing seen by people and thought I would try Youtube. The news has spread and lots of help has come my way. A friend on Facebook sent my story and videos to friends in the media and...wow! Thanks for writing-Tom
I noticed that you have metal fillings in your mouth. Metal fillings over time can cause quite a few neurological, mental and other health issues. I would definitelylook into having them replaced with porcelain ones. My husband had his removed due to memory problems and other issues and he has dramatically improved. You may have nerve damage to the area that is causing communication issues in the nerves/brain and also causing the numbness. I am sure you have already had these checked out.
After my wisdom teeth were removed, I too suffered from TMJ.. my jaw now pops in and out of place every time my mouth opens too wide.. more so when I yawn or eat. I also had a dentist break one of his tools inside of my gums during a root canal. My face became infected and swollen to the point where I wasn't recognizable to anyone. I lost my job because of it as well.. People need to be trained and constantly retrained in their fields it seems!!
@fitzerg I THOUGHT THE SAME THING! I talked to my various Dr's and we've tried different meds that are supposed to have the same effect minus the sleeping aspect, but nothing has worked. Great idea! Thanks-Tom
Have you seen the recent reports of Ambien waking up people who have been in a vegetative state for the duration of the effects of the Ambien. Most go back to the vegetative state when the Ambien wears off, but at least person finally came out of his coma with the help of Ambien. I think what you are expreriencing must have something to do with what these folks are experiencing. I wish you all the best and hope that the TMJ goes away.
@MrJohnnyHempseed Nope Johnny I'm in NC and FL. It's crazy to me that a plant is illegal. Like saying tomatoes are illegal. Don't get me started bout this issue. I know a lot of people think medical mj is BS but I believe there's truth in it. I just can't do it legally in my states. Cheers-Tom
The brain is able to make changes due to a property that is called "plasticity" which has unfortunately been working against you. The MRI shows no damage (which is good). But this is like putting two computers side by side and trying to figure out which one isn't working by looking at them. You can't tell what is wrong until you turn them on. The medical tests show everything is there which is good but somehow the internal wiring got crossed up.
You need to see a chiropractor trained in Functional Neurology and metabolic work. These doctors are specially trained to diagnose the part or parts of your brain that are not functioning properly and provide specific rehabilitation procedures to get them working again. Once that process happens, the "Ambien effect" will become permanent. I have colleagues that have helped numerous speech disorders, even in post stroke cases (even though yours is not due to stroke).
Your problem is that parts of your brain are not working together properly. That's the reason that Ambien works. It has a neurotransmitter modulation effect in your brain that is unfortunately temporary in nature. In other words, it changes brain function temporarily so that it can (and does) work together more like it should. They even use Ambien to wake up coma patients!
@geegirl1169 I've thought about it. I looked at Dr. Phil's site and they were requesting upset family, issues type stories. Mine's more of a WHAT THE HECK happened to my speaking ability! Dr. Oz I didn't think about...lol...if I went on he'd kick my butt about being so overweight.."Tom, what do you eat for dinner?" Me-"Ummmmmm....next question please." Thanks for writing-Tom
@paintinbiker - Seriously, come to Oregon and I'll give it to you for nothing just so you could give it a try. Smoking MJ helps me out, like he said worst thing that could happen is you get high.
I'm shocked some think you faked it! Why would you do that if you were still a working voice-over actor in good standing? To me, you don't seem like the opportunistic type. You had a bad experience after oral surgery (I've had major oral surgery in the past that took 3 months to heal enough that I could even bite and pull, thankfully with no side effects) Kudos for staying strong and reaching out in light of this horribly ironic affliction. I'm a singer who would be LOST without my voice!
@4piglite I WAS lost for sure. I think that those stages of grief we hear of are true. Last year was rough, but as time went on the lows became less. I'm in the "acceptance" phase now...except...I'm not accepting this as a permanent condition. I've just stopped with the why me's and wah wah life is terrible thought processes. I'm going to get this fixed for certain. Thanks-Tom
Hey Tom, I've had similar problems as you, maybe not as extreme, but I was unable to find any doctor who could help. In my case, as I was taking anti-depressants, SSRI's, they caused the problem. I recently stopped, last July and most of this has gone away. If I take a sleeping pill, it seems to relax me enough to ease the muscles and the pain/odd feelings are much less. This may not be helpful to you, but every doctor knew what I was taking and had no clue of the side effects, good luck!!
@Fulton762 Hey Fulton glad things are working better for you. I take a blood pressure and tamusolin, but no anti-depressers. I had thought maybe some side effect too. The thing with me is everything happened right away..at least the numbness and tmj issue was immediate. The slurring grew slowly. I remember having to really try hard to be exact with my reads then the slurring was too hard to overcome. Thanks for the good wishes. Tom
This reminds me of a story I heard from one of my employees. He had dental work and the anesthesia caused him to start going blind in one eye. This suggests to me, the possibility that the anesthesia can directly induce brain damage and/or simulate a stroke. Ambien might help because it relaxes the motor-neurons, much the same way someone stops stuttering when they're calm.
@RickJLV WOW it's amazing how many stories I've read in the past few days about dental work gone bad. You just never think about it cause you go in trusting. I'm really hoping that whoever is involved in manufacturing Ambien or knows the exact science of it contacts me. It's like magic...kinda. Cept without the rabbit and the hat. Thanks for writing Rick. Tom
Un-*ucking-believable - the comparison between your speaking before and after Ambien. I sat here dumbfounded listening to and reading your story. Listened to your voice work - so good! Don't give up - I want to read in People Magazine about how some brillian doctor figured out how to correct your problem. It may take time, but I believe someone will figure it out for you. Best wishes!
@vid13fan It blew the mind the first time I discovered the Ambien thing. I was so happy and it's happened a few times. One time in September I went to a dinner party and was in the mumbly, straining to talk state. Around 8pm I took the Ambien. At 10pm I was playing guitar and singing with my friends. I just wish the effect would stick. Thanks for the good words about my former professional yapping. I was blessed with being a professional vocal goofball lol Have a great weekend-Tom
Considering I'm nowhere near being a doctor. though I'm gifted in pattern recognition. Reading the recent reports of Ambien taking catatonic people out of their vegetative states temporarily, I wonder if your speaking and the TMJ were merely coincidental. You said you didn't have a stroke. There are other neurological conditions that cause brain degeneration. Have you tested for these? Do doctors assume the TMJ is the cause? Maybe you should look into breaking that assumption. Best of luck!
@germanywx Hey Germany the thing is I was fine, totally fine, prior to the extraction. Check the video of me on youtube demonstrating the Baxley motorcycle trailer just a month before the extraction. I am seeing another Neurologist this coming week. Thanks for taking the time to write. Tom
But it seems you are only interested in videoing yourself...none of the many suggestions folks have offered seem feasible to you. Are you seeking attention? Is this your big comeback as a voice artist. And, that no professional seems to be able to help you ?????? Come on man. Who do you take us for? Seems like you have no problem with "R" sounds, and the "r" requires the most control to pronounce. Give it up. Or maybe you're seeking $ compensation from the dentist.
@towertime1 Guess we're reading dif posts. I'm videoing myself since I'm the person seeking help. Read many good suggestions and exchanging ideas. Seeing another Neurologist on Mon next week. Yep I AM indeed seeking attention. I want this to end. I spent 6k and a yr with a tmj dentist that wasted his time and my money all the while my voice quality continued to crash. Where's the comeback aspect of this? That I CAN'T speak? lol There's not many gigs for that. Hardest aren't r's but f's and s's.
@towertime1 You sound foolish. Look more into his story before you make such bogus claims. Do you realize how silly you sound? "Who do you take us for?" He's not taking us for anything, he put up these videos because he's seeking help for his condition. How can this be his comeback as a voice artist if he can't talk the way he used to? Idiotic comment. There's always someone like you that has to say something stupid.
@iMstrKrft lol I had to laugh about the "comeback" idea too. How the hell am I coming back when I can't even talk! lol Everybody's got an opinion and being anonymous helps in saying things freely. Thanks for your support-Tom
@towertime1 Well Pal, I'm not asking you to buy anything. I'd be one happy cat if this were a put on or gag. I've been out of work as a voice talent for about a year and a half. It's no joke or act. I was amazed at the difference the drug made and am asking people for help. Tom
@towertime1 - you honestly think someone who does voiceovers for living is gonna resort to this to get attention?? This type of thing is rare but does happen, on yahoo today, a family is suing a dentist because their kid died during a wisdom tooth extraction. Why don't you read a lil bit instead of informing us of your lack of knowledge. Thomas - I hope you get help man, this would just suck. Get better man!
@LoneWolfVideography Thanks Lone..and it does "just suck". But wow...all the positive information coming my way has more than help lift the spirits. Last night someone connected with me on Skype to show me some pressure point treatments and it helped! This morning I was less "spazzy". Eventually after trying to talk all day it went to hell again, but her tips did work. Pretty cool. Thanks-Tom
@towertime1 To each his own, but, why would he make this up? It doesn't make sense. What if it is real, have you thought of that? I can think of better ways to get attention, oh wait he already was with his job, before this all happened. There is no reason on earth for him to do this. I hope he finds the help he needs, besides the ambien. Best of luck to you Tom.
@BrokenArts Thanks Broken. I appreciate your support. I can not believe the goodness that has been sent my way. I've had hundreds of emails with either good wishes or referrals to docs. What's been cool too is to hear from people who've had similar problems and we're sharing treatment ideas. Cheers-Tom
Perhaps you need to see a different chiro. I'm not talking about 'neck cracking'. I'm talking about (potentially) much finer adjustments to the TMjoint and/or skull plates, etc. There are specialists out there for TMJ. The supplements for nerve healing are also important...it is possible for damaged nerves to repair. check out 'B vitamins for nerve healing'. Hope the suggestion helps!
@colorsmithing I have seen that different type of chiro you mention and nothing really came from it other than me spending more money. You're probably right on upping the vitamin intake. Thanks for the tip! Tom
Es ist für drei Wachkoma-Patienten beschrieben, dass Zolpidem wiederholt zu einer vorübergehenden, eingeschränkten Wiedererlangung der Vigilanz bis hin zu voller Wachheit geführt habe. from wiki
which essentialy says that Zolpidem has woken up coma patients in 3 cases (I heard a german radioarticle on that opica a while ago.)
@DooMMasteR I have read about that in articles from 2006 but nothing after. The Ambien doesn't have the dramatic effect it did for me in August. My condition has deteriorated so that during the day my neck and mouth muscles are almost constantly constricted and when I take Ambien at night for sleep the effect isn't as pronounced. It still helps. Thanks for writing.
@codyave The Ambien was prescribed just for my insomnia, not as a fix for the speech problem. I had no idea it would have this effect and neither did my doc. I just happened to stay up late after taking it and said something and it was totally clear speech. Couldn't believe it. It still shocks me to see the big difference. Doesn't have the same dramatic effect now. It helps reduce the muscle spasms but speech isn't as improved.
Have any doctors mentioned oromandibular dystonia? The wikipedia entry says they use botulinum toxin to treat it. You should check it out if you haven't already.
@Existential0 A neurologist mentioned doing botox on one visit, but said we'd have determine which muscles are spasming the most and didn't like the hit or miss approach. I'll check out the oromandibular dystonia info. Thanks, Tom
I had a tooth extracted and have experienced clicking, swelling, and I can hear my heart beat in the ear on the side where the tooth was. It impedes my hearing sometimes. The only thing that helps me are anti-inflammatory medications. I hope someone out there knows how to help. Keep us posted!
Tom, have you tried marijuana? I would be curious to see if your speech has similar effects to ambien.

@NorthMom2015 Good idea thanks Doc! Btw..the extraction wasn't performed by an oral surgeon, just a regular DDS.

Would a muscle relaxant pill help? You can still do voice over work I think... You can apply for a job, send them an example of you speaking, and, prior to the voice over job, take a heavy dose of Ambien.

I see you don't want to post comments suggesting you have a functional or conversion disorder, but there is help for this disorder.
peterjohns84 2 months ago
@peterjohns84 Hi I'm posting all comments except for spam. I think conversion diagnosis doesn't acknowledge the very real numbness, slurring and tmj problems that developed either immediately or within 2 months after the tooth extraction. I even saw a psychiatrist and discussed things. He advised I see another Neurologist which I'm doing next week. Thanks for writing and hey...whatever works, I'm all for it! Cheers-Tom

DreamingInsomnia 2 months ago
@DreamingInsomnia How do we untangle those pathways? A swift blow to the head? lol I have to joke about all this cause otherwise it's crying in the pillow kind of stuff and that just makes for a soggy pillow. It'll make for a heck of a story when it gets fixed. I believe it will be. Thanks for jumping in! Tom
paintinbiker 2 months ago
@paintinbiker lol Humor is good. The main thing, though neuro isn't my specialty mind you, is finding out if your normal speech-to-actualization pathways are damaged(the ambien paralyzes them, forcing the brain to reroute the signals resulting clarity of speech)or if the brain is confused and trying to use the wrong pathways(those pathways get paralyzed, the brain reroutes).I favor the 1st scenario, talk to your neuro. Its where I'd be looking, again though neuro isn't my specialty.
DreamingInsomnia 2 months ago
I used to have TMJ myself. I had all kinds of jaw, throat, and neck pain, loud crackling when I chewed. and bad headaches because of it. My doctor prescribed apo-amitriptyline taken nightly, as it made you drowsy. It is commonly prescribed for TMJ. There may be a correlation with what you are taking, as it makes you sleepy too. Anyhow, it eventually cured me of it. Over time my jaw stopped being so strong and relaxed. I think the dentist injured your jaw, you may need physiotherapy too.

Dear Tom,
It was quite a positive change in your speaking when you utilized Ambien. I would discourage the use of sign language, and adjust your speech rate and latency or the amount of time paused between each spoken word. An expert speech language pathologist
could help you adjust them so that while you are finding answers, you could still be speaking with clarity.
Let me know if I could help.

markittleman 2 months ago
@markittleman Hi Mark- Thanks for writing. I've tried the paced out, latency speech technique, but the word (mouth) formations are still the same. I just don't have the muscle control. I think the sign language is a positive "crutch" at this point and also a positive in general since I can communicate, very basically, with members of the Deaf community. I know I will need speech therapy once we've got the muscle control down. Thanks for the note Mark.
Cheers-Tom

My husband's speech is severely impaired due to a severe traumatic brain injury. He receives Myobloc (i.e. Botox) injections in his facial/jaw muscles but not for speech. It is hit or miss. Another option may be anti-spasmodic medicines, such as Baclofen. Reach out to Dr. Ross Zafonte, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Harvard Medical School. He helped my husband in Pittsburgh. Another doctor to check out, Dr. Michael Munin, UPMC.

paintinbiker 2 months ago
Do you have any numbness? From my estimation you're having spasticticty in the muscles to your tongue and maybe some of the muscles involved in jaw movement. Do you have any problems eating? Swallowing? The problem with your voice may be linked to a different set of nerves that wouldn't be affected by surgery on your 3rd molar.
duddits2k7 2 months ago

What I would do is talk to some of your old clients on the phone, tell them your name, and listen to their disbelief.

paintinbiker 2 months ago
I think the reason why people can't believe your condition is because it's not a physical problem, it's a psychological problem... or at least not a known disorder.
It's like having tourettes. I've had similar spasms in the past but not this severe, just a little bit of slurs that ends up making want to repeat myself. Although I wouldn't say the condition is nearly the same.
I am not a doctor, just giving my thought out.
Maybe it's just a coincidence that having your wisdom teeth pulled out.

@misterpink95 You know what's weird....if I yawn I can speak! Even now on the worst days. If I yawn my resonance and full voice are there. I don't get it.
paintinbiker 2 months ago

I have colleagues that have helped numerous speech disorders, even in post stroke cases (even though yours is not due to stroke).
mclancey1962 2 months ago
Tom:
Your problem is that parts of your brain are not working together properly. That's the reason that Ambien works. It has a neurotransmitter modulation effect in your brain that is unfortunately temporary in nature. In other words, it changes brain function temporarily so that it can (and does) work together more like it should. They even use Ambien to wake up coma patients!

One time in September I went to a dinner party and was in the mumbly, straining to talk state. Around 8pm I took the Ambien. At 10pm I was playing guitar and singing with my friends. I just wish the effect would stick. Thanks for the good words about my former professional yapping. I was blessed with being a professional vocal goofball lol Have a great weekend-Tom

is it possible to sue the dentist that ruined your life?
OldmanMaestro 2 months ago
Considering I'm nowhere near being a doctor. though I'm gifted in pattern recognition. Reading the recent reports of Ambien taking catatonic people out of their vegetative states temporarily, I wonder if your speaking and the TMJ were merely coincidental. You said you didn't have a stroke. There are other neurological conditions that cause brain degeneration. Have you tested for these? Do doctors assume the TMJ is the cause? Maybe you should look into breaking that assumption. Best of luck!
germanywx 2 months ago

Give it up. Or maybe you're seeking $ compensation from the dentist.
towertime1 2 months ago

There's always someone like you that has to say something stupid.
iMstrKrft 2 months ago
@iMstrKrft lol I had to laugh about the "comeback" idea too. How the hell am I coming back when I can't even talk! lol Everybody's got an opinion and being anonymous helps in saying things freely. Thanks for your support-Tom

Sorry pal...but I don't buy it.
towertime1 2 months ago

LoneWolfVideography 2 months ago
@LoneWolfVideography Thanks Lone..and it does "just suck". But wow...all the positive information coming my way has more than help lift the spirits. Last night someone connected with me on Skype to show me some pressure point treatments and it helped! This morning I was less "spazzy". Eventually after trying to talk all day it went to hell again, but her tips did work. Pretty cool. Thanks-Tom

@towertime1 You're a selfish "human" being.
HyruleLand 2 months ago
@towertime1 To each his own, but, why would he make this up? It doesn't make sense. What if it is real, have you thought of that? I can think of better ways to get attention, oh wait he already was with his job, before this all happened. There is no reason on earth for him to do this. I hope he finds the help he needs, besides the ambien. Best of luck to you Tom.
BrokenArts 2 months ago

Hope the suggestion helps!
colorsmithing 2 months ago

DooMMasteR 2 months ago
@DooMMasteR I have read about that in articles from 2006 but nothing after. The Ambien doesn't have the dramatic effect it did for me in August. My condition has deteriorated so that during the day my neck and mouth muscles are almost constantly constricted and when I take Ambien at night for sleep the effect isn't as pronounced. It still helps. Thanks for writing.
paintinbiker 2 months ago
out of curiosity, who suggested taking ambien?
codyave 2 months ago
@codyave The Ambien was prescribed just for my insomnia, not as a fix for the speech problem. I had no idea it would have this effect and neither did my doc. I just happened to stay up late after taking it and said something and it was totally clear speech. Couldn't believe it. It still shocks me to see the big difference. Doesn't have the same dramatic effect now. It helps reduce the muscle spasms but speech isn't as improved.

Have any doctors mentioned oromandibular dystonia? The wikipedia entry says they use botulinum toxin to treat it. You should check it out if you haven't already.
Existential0 2 months ago
@Existential0 A neurologist mentioned doing botox on one visit, but said we'd have determine which muscles are spasming the most and didn't like the hit or miss approach. I'll check out the oromandibular dystonia info. Thanks, Tom

I had a tooth extracted and have experienced clicking, swelling, and I can hear my heart beat in the ear on the side where the tooth was. It impedes my hearing sometimes. The only thing that helps me are anti-inflammatory medications. I hope someone out there knows how to help. Keep us posted!
