it's loosly based on true storys, i think the 3 cities you play the game in are jerusalim, damascas, and somewhere else in the holy land.

the only real truth in the story is that suppoused assasin clan you play in, historical writings show that such a clan did exist at the time, but who they assinated and where is not known.
