Spent three hours learning this from a final disc about 30 years ago to impress my two young sons. Thirty years later they get me to do it as a party trick for their children. Sorry I learnt it!
@AnasTangi - 'Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu'. This is the name of a place in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. It is in the Maori language and means the summit of a hill where a man called 'Tamatea', with the big knees, the climber of mountains, who travelled the land, played the flute to his loved one. This is the second longest place name in the World. I have had the privilege of visiting that place too :)
I remember spending 2 hours learning the "words' to the gobbledegook part for my children when they were young. Boy ! were they impressed. So much harder to impress them now.
i LOVE THIS SONG .TAKES ME BACK TO MY TEENS.i REMEMBER TRYING TO LEARN THE INTRO.....NEARLY BROKE MY TONGUE !.......STILL A VERY FUNNY RECORD..THANK YOU !
This is an amazing tune!!! I can still say the opening! At speed. It took me ages as a teenager to learn it, by playing the record over and over again while reading the words from the guiness book of records!! This is what memories are made of!! Cheers for posting!
I have just gone back in time 31years!! This song was brilliant at the time and in my opinion still is. Super smashing, lovely. Thank you for making me smile from ear to ear.
Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu - the Maori name for a hill near Waipukurau in southern Hawke's Bay, New Zealand.
great track thanks for sharing it!. This was also one of the songs from The Bitch Soundtrack, that starred Joan Collins. Kenny Evert used to use this in his show for a while to.
We are going to make a video of us doing it even faster!! if you would like to see it , type in Briony and Gary and you will see us. we will probably do the video on sunday 31st January xx
what a class track ive just gone on a trip down memory lane. my vinyl wersion is slightly diferent. what guitars u dont ger that superb sound from all the yo yo music out there now, is it available on CD or anyone know if any torrent sits have it?
Whatever happened to Rupert Hine, the guy behind quantum jump? Because as far as I know he disbanded the group and never formed another one. Love to know if anyone has an answer to that.
blagger: I hate to burst your bubble mate, but the opening words on the song were totally made up. It was added to the front of the start of the song by the producer, on an order of the record executive to make it more memorable. So if I were you, I'd stop looking at Wikipedia for your research, as the entries are mostly all wrong. ;-) Nice try though.
It is actually a place name, as Blagger said its name is Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenua and it is a name for a hill meaning he hill where the great traveler (Chief) Tamatea with the bony knees, who slid and climbed mountains, played his flute to his beloved.
I didnt think longest words could be place names? Becasue again on wiki, so im not sure how reliable this is claims it was the longest word in the world at the time in the guiness book of records...answers on the back of a stamp please lol
Dude I live in New Zealand. Taumata is a real place, and the name really is that long. It's fantastic saying it to tourists and they just stare at you, thinking 'What...?' But no, it is a real place name
nah the opening word (name of a mountain or place in new zealans) is "Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu" copy and paste it in2 wikipedia it tells u there, it features in an old skool rave tune called conquer - warpath, thats where i first heard it
Oh wow, this is the first time I've heard this single since it was first released. I was always hugely impressed with the jazz guitar licks. I also remember sitting down with a friend and the 7" single endlessly trying to copy down the 'Taumata...' line. I think it took us 3 hours of record player tricks to finally get it down and learn it.
Fast forward to the present day and I can *still* recite the whole line but can't remember what I went upstairs for. Is't the human memory weird?
If you play this record backwards it says "uhatanatikaunehwhakatangihangakoauauot turipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaukhamebdkatamuaT". but don't wreck your needle
"Ta mata waka tami ami kui uu uu tama taia tudigu kaaka piki mongon hona nuka poka wena waka tana tamu mata kua tena nuru kawa miki tora". Why Stanley, you took the woyds right out of my mouth.
The title (and Wikipedia where it came from) is wrong. The song came out in 1979, not 76 - and it was Kenny Everett who championed the record, not Tony Blackburn.
yes, I remember the 'Didn't quite make it in time for Xmas televison show. At the beginning he said "Before you can say", and a cartoon of a Red Indian lipsynched the words. Funny as hell.
Apparently the lone Ranger and Tonto aren't speaking these days.....word has it, the Lone Ranger found out that Rossini wrote his signature tune......
(p.s....and also what 'Kimosabi' means, incidentally..
Apparenly 'Jump' once said, 'I'd give Zappa, Steely Dan, Little Feat, Steely Dan again, Beefheart, Cooder, anything involving ukeleles, anything involving a percussion section with or without triangles, a BIG, FAT, FUCKING, SLOPPY BIG (too many bigs - Ed), ...(did I mention smelly..?)..SMELLY...oh, fignit out YASELLFS!!
I remember, back in 1976, having just collected my copy of the recently-pressed masterpiece 'The Royal Scam' by the colonial beatcombo who went by the name of...oh I forget their name, it doesn't matter....anyway I was waving a copy of my newley purchased Quantum Jump LP in front of a benefit officer, as I endeavoured to claim enough money to stay alive back in 1976, shouting "this will be worth a lot of money in 30 years times.."
I remember Mr Zappa devouring his scrambled eggs one breakfast, after which he gobbled a mushroom, wiped his trademark moustache and beard combination, and exclaimed.." if only I could've hired a few of these cunts in Quantum Jump, I could've saved literally tens of dollars on the twats I currently have mangling my musical masterpieces...!..where's the marmelade...?" I turned, tail well and truly between the pins, and ran in a dignified fashion back to Rose in the kitchen....
The band would however make an unexpected return two years later, when a re-release of the "Lone Ranger" single became an unexpected hit. The song had been widely played by Kenny Everett on both his radio and TV shows. Rereleased in 1979, it crept up the UK charts over a period of three to four months, eventually reaching number 5 and selling approximately 500,000 copies
Great to hear this again ! It brings back fond memories of Plymouth . We went to see the band in some dodgy club in Union Street . There was about 20 of us in the crowd but the band still laid down a great set . If memory serves well they were session guys , hence the high standard of musicianship.
I'm so glad i found this! It took a few searches because I couldn't remember the name of the group. Brings back some memories. It is one of the cleverest pop songs ever. Brilliant lyrics and scathing jazzy guitar. Thank you for posting it!
Excellent, excellent post. Fantastic synths, lyrics Difford and Tilbrook on acid would have been proud of... Perfect piece of pop. I remember the lyrics appearing in 'Smash Hits'. '...Mr Lawman, Tonto doesn't mind...'
