  • Love the back-up vocals from Michael McDonald!

  • Great workout tune. Try skipping rope to this - awesome!

  • When they play live every tune is included from "Reelin" to "Cousin Dupree" Fagan's been the brains behind the words since the start.

  • One of my all times favourites.

  • Excellently brilliant plus! I could write more, but brilliance is brilliance; enough said.

  • "The Dan" hit #22 on Billboard Hot 100 on 4/25/81. Thanks for posting it! :)

  • I currently own all steely's albums up to Fagen's Nightfly album and they are great one in all.... in my opinion. Music is objective, everyone has different tastes so saying one version of a group is better than the other is objective. On that note i also enjoy both versions of the doobie bros. but someone else would say only pre Michael Macdonald is "real"

  • @humminbird71 You say, "Music is objective, everyone has different tastes so saying one version of a group is better than the other is objective." Really? Surely tastes themselves are subjective, so you seem to be proposing some new version of Orwell's Newspeak. But on THAT note, ridiculous must means sensible.

  • @jax1moi8 Please excuse my high school level education. I realise i strung together poor word usage and my sincerest apologies. However i think the fine folks of youtubeland get the gist of what i was trying to say.

  • Is that Larry Carlton on guitar?

  • I chased the dragon over the years WAY too many times, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.....horrible!

  • this is not steely fucking dan. this is a fucking lie. reeling in the years - THAT'S the steely i know

  • @newfuckingwave Why,perchance,is this not Steely Dan? Because they didn't record cuts that continued in the vein of R.I.T Years? Because they morphed and evolved, did things They wanted to do and not what You,dear reader wanted them to do?

Why don't you start a Steely Dan tribute band and only play songs from Can't Buy A Thrill? Cause you caustic opinion only serves to make you look shallow

  • @bloykunker you know what, YOU are a tool for thinking that this is the same glorious dan that gave us can't buy a thrill, countdown to ecstasy, and pretzel logic. if fagen and becker told you to jump off a cliff, would you? i think you would. the dan i know and love is dead, and he died when denny and skunk were thrown out of the band they lovingly created

  • @newfuckingwave if u think this album isnt good, then u think hey nineteen isnt good, and that makes you a fucking retard

  • @newfuckingwave Your emotions are getting the better of you. Relax and breath.

I appreciate Music and don't give a hoot about band politics such as who left and why.

This is as pointless as arguing why my favorite color is green and yours is red. I won't begrudge the fact that you are far and above more emotionally invested in this band than I would ever want to be. Life's choice is to Chase the Glory days or Evolve and Perish in pastime reflection. The end.

  • @bloykunker SHUT YOUR MOUTH BOY. THEM JEWS TURNED THE DAN INTO SOME NIGGER FREAK SHOW. MAKE ME THROW UP IN MY GODDAMN MOUTH IT DOES

  • @bloykunker There isn't anything worse than a stagnant musical soul. Bless his pitiful heart....

  • @THEALABAMANATI0N you clearly understand the plight of the southern man, as represented in the hardships of denny and skunk

  • I consistently lobby to have Steely Dan played at every party I go to

  • I was five when this first hit the streets. I have a complete different visualization of chasing a dragon!!!

  • Hi PamelaB54 , i really love this song ,true , i remember buying it and just loved the freshness of it , thats the 1st song when they came to NZ when they played here . Brillant !

Yep i thought it would be some Drug influenced song. cheers.

  • Its perfection and grace, its the smile on my face!!

  • they are nicer than shit

  • these two dudes are the shit..

  • Steely Dan channels Earth, Wind & Fire.

  • As a kid born in '71, I had just a small notion of who/what Steely Dan was. As an adult I've come to realize that Steely Dan is the greatest band of my generation.

"Time Out Of Mind" exlemplifies why Steely Dan is so damned good.

I listened to it for the first time about 2 years ago... and it immediately became my favorite song... and probably will be my favorite song for the rest of my life.

I love the bass guitar in "pop" music. Any suggestions?

  • @RazrbckKev I suggest you listen to more Steely Dan, some McCartney and Wings anything by Rush put on headphones and moving pictures by Rush and let the bass and overall musicianship take you on a journey. Oh yah keep up your good taste in music.

  • i find it funny that every time i smoke weed i have to listen to this song...and i find it funnier that im 16 questioning my own morality for doing so :/

  • Just an awesome song. I had never heard it until about 4 or 5 years ago. A cool groove that makes you feel like need to put on a fedora as you listen! Dan at their best!

  • mmmmmeeeeeeean funky

  • PeeWee Herman on skinflute

  • Some of the purist music ever made.

  • does anyone have got a video that mark knopfler playing this song together in steely dan concert?

  • @utopro I know that Steely Dan always hired the most talented studio musicians available, but was Knopfler a part of them?

  • always great....the dan!!!!

  • 3:11 am sunday morning for me.

  • @Augenstein ..Exactly, Sundays mornings with the DAN after a bruising night out...Sunday Paper, Steely Dan, Cajun Bloody Mary...Later more Dan "Reelin" in the Year" and then some good SMOKE on the BBQ Pit and maybe a little in my lungs

  • mark knopfler on lead guitar in this one

  • Quelle belle mélodie!... On invite les dames?

  • so that stuff they gave me in the hospital was crack??

  • Man, who would ever believe that a song about smokin' crack could sound so beautiful??!

  • @wildnites558 "chasing the dragon" is old 70s slang for smoking heroin

  • No surprise that you hear so few cover versions of Steely Dan songs - sheer beauty and perfection such as this is hard to replicate.

  • HEROIN!!!!!!!!!

  • conan o'brien on drums

  • @swimmerB0B shut up that was stupid you faggot!

  • chevy chase on drums

  • @sfkforever That's not true, he only played with them in college at some live gigs, they said he was good though.

  • its the dan band expect nothing less they are the best

  • Shit.. You guys make me feel old (Haha) 4:30am would kill me (Even with really good Coke.. Which would have been my preference before i gave up such things) But it's nice to know we all appreciate good music :)

  • Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits played guitar on this track. Seriously !!

  • its perfection and grace!

  • Comment removed

  • stunning track.

  • It's smoking opium off a piece of tin foil over a soda can or a bong full of water or other substance. The opium came in the form of red cigar-shape.

  • Donald Fagen has the most amazing voice. I could listen to him sing anything!

  • Agreed...best on the album!

  • I gonna chase the dragon tonite in the Big Country!!!

  • @427supersnake

Chasing The Dragon, means main-lining Heroin

  • @twinesplitter Thanks for headsup, I like the term and use it genericly for "smokin up" sounds better than "tappin a splif"

  • @427supersnake

Originally "Chasing The Dragon" was going to an Opium Den and partaking, however with the advent of tons of Heroin to all parts of the World. Opiate users do not have to chase the dragon to China, India or other parts of Asia, as it is available in speedball sufficiency. If one chases the dragon over a period of years, the onset of death is not far behind.

  • bearmassaro i think its hey nineteen or babylon sisters

  • These white boys can Jam!!!!!

  • WELL, IF YOU MUST get twacked out this is as good a soundtrack as any.... but i prefer listening to dan jams while enjoying a vape or puff of the herb that is so dear to me.

  • Fuck---you have to watch the entire fucking advertisement now?

  • Best song on the album...

  • Comments are all cool, the spectulation....can be whatever....."its the smile on my face" I am a true Steely Dan fan 37 years, so one could say that I have alot of great moments in my life of Donald and Walter, Time Out Of Mind is about Chasing the opium dragon, one of many of the best ever done. ♫Tonight when I chase the dragon, the water may change to cherry wine and the silver will turn to gold........ time out of mind♫ can't hear it enough.

  • ^

    Die hard Steely Dan fan.

  • vaporizing, using tinfoil , a straw and a lighter is referred to as "Chasing the Dragon" because you had to follow, or chase the vapor as it burned up the line.

  • I believe "chasing the dragon" refers not just to smoking opium or its derivatives, but to the pursuit of the ultimate high, which can one can never quite attain.

  • @voiceofmegatron Yeah Right!!! LOL!!

  • @voiceofmegatron I thought it was related to heroin addiction?

i always think of that game bart plays in the simpsons? or was it south park? Anyways:there is a character chasing a dragon and keeps injecting himself.God that was just so incredibly evil for a reference.

  • @piromaniac9999 yeah i think that was cartman in south park hahaha

  • @randeezydizzle That was so evil for a reference.

  • @randeezydizzle That was just plain evil,i mean:The guys who made that knew they were making a steely dan reference to the song, and that it was about drugs.

  • @voiceofmegatron I've been there don't want to talk bout it though.......

  • @voiceofmegatron nope man its all H!

  • It's perfection and grace.

  • @voiceofmegatron It's the smile on my face.

  • This was a great album...come to think of it all their albums were great. I think they remind me of the 70's more than any other band for some reason, of course they were all over the radio back then, great days to be alive.

  • "chasing the dragon" is taken from a chinese euphemism for smoking opium.

  • @CorvusDreams I think it actually means smoking heroin which is highly not recommended.

  • my all time favorite SD tune

  • Cocaine's is God's way of telling you you're making way too much money.....

  • did someone say Opium? I could tell stories of 200 dollars worth of opium-a week off work-empty house-bills paid and all my dan albums played into oblivion!

  • tru dat peelumba

  • THE BRIDGE JUST KILLS ME. EVERY TIME.

  • Great song....Chase the dragon....tonight!!!

  • If I DID take drugs it would be to this album

  • Blowing sum kush, and this song is taking back to the 70's.

  • @holygalaga Thanks for that story: a perfect vision for this album!

  • I gotta assume that I can't be the only freak awake on YouTube at 4:30 in the a.m. on a Monday morning listening to fantastic Steely Dan tracks!!!

  • @kernelforbin84 2:45 following Monday or Tuesday morning looking for the song with the lyric"They call Alabama the Crimson Tide, Calm and deep and blue....

  • @joyla38 Deacon Blues

  • @kernelforbin84 cocaine's a helluva a drug

  • @bryanhunt9 That's true.... but lsd in that case :)))))

  • @kernelforbin84 isn't that everyone's monday morning?

  • @kernelforbin84 You probably were the only freak awake at 4:30 AM. But time well spent! This song is still fricking brilliant.

  • @kernelforbin84 oh no you're not alone.

  • @kernelforbin84 been there at 3:30 am mon morning but never 4:30 i admire your dedication

  • @kernelforbin84 Same here matey!!!...

  • @kernelforbin84 Same here, friend. Enjoying a bologna sandwich and some Lay's potato chips at 5:05 AM while YouTube and Steely Dan rock my mind!!! It doesn't get any better! Cheers!

  • @kernelforbin84 Thirty people agree that you're a freak...

  • @weightfeather1 Wow sorry for this painful experience. Please be aware that Deja Vu came out in 1970.

  • The first time I ever dabbled in crystal meth I stayed up for 19 hours straight; spending 13 of those hours playing this and "Glamor Profession" on a First Act drum set while having my then-girlfriend-now-wife Tanya flip the record over and reset the needle to each cut. Memories indeed!

  • @holygalaga the dragon is not meth......just sayin

  • @PamelaB54

    opium isn't it?

  • @flyfysher of the highest grade....

  • @flyfysher heroin maybe?

  • @holygalaga : go 4 it. !!!!!!

  • @holygalaga Good thing you're still alive to make this comment...

  • @zcg3 lol what an understatement, I am 57, been to hell and back and still alive and kickin.......So I appreciate talent, good musicians, people who can read and play music.........my granpa and cousin played for Bob Wills..........my dad played jazz so I was born into some great music of everyones time and I dont know your stats and it doesnt matter. I was there to see Hendrix , Joplin, Zappa, Dylan(many times) zz top, on and on so I think your lucky to be hearing great music from us.

  • @holygalaga Dabbling in meth? Wow, I never met anyone who just dabbled. How'd that work out for ya?

  • @holygalaga Kyeeha! Perfect soundtrack! It was Gaucho and Yes Fragile for my dabbling!!!!!

  • the little horn fade between lyrics on the chorus is tickling my brain.....

  • We took an ipod into the delivery room... My little girl was born while this song was playing. It was special even before that for me, but now... My wife named my daughter Grace (family name). Now when I hear "...perfection and Grace" it really does put a smile on my face. Grew up on Steely Dan. Great music.

  • You gotta respect and love The Dan. :-}

  • last song before my drunk ass goes to sleep! Fucking love this band!

  • @FolkMetalPiper Spot on, mate! And the silver will turn to gold...

  • I had a 280z - copper - my boyfriend's always drove it under similar conditions - yes, I hope everyone we all were close to in our lives before the world got to us is happy too...

  • @weightfeather1

Beautifully written, my friend. Amazing how such few words can evoke such emotion.

  • man! first time i ever heard this was on a boom box i bought used off this guy for 30 bucks ,it worked like crap till i got bout half mile from home then this comes on nice and clear man im jammin, than george benson ,s gimmie the night comes on.

BEST THIRTY BUCKS I EVER SPENT

  • are you holding a mystical sphere??????????

  • @weightfeather1 You're welcome weightfeather.

  • @weightfeather1 I understand. You've gotta great looking forward perspective. What lies behind is behind. For better or for worse, I just tend to be nostalgic and sentimental. I guess there's probably a good balance somewhere in the middle. I loved my life's experiences in the past and am sometimes wistful for them. But I know that I must be thankful for the present and I am. I enjoy the dialogue, Weightfeather.

  • @weightfeather1 I hear you. A lot of "what ifs" in life. I guess that's what makes it interesting. Reminds me of the poem by Robert Frost "The Road Not Taken." Have you tried to locate Chrissy on Facebook or other such social networks? No need to answer if I'm being too nosy. I'm just curious and nostalgic by nature.

  • @weightfeather1 Great story. Life is amazing light that. What memories music evokes. I wonder if you have any melancholy when you are reminded of that day and memory.

  • @TheIncognito62 Truth matters.

  • 3 people weren't ready for love

  • @hpoz222

they might have forgot to put a dollar in the kitty

  • Nice song! smooooooooooooooth... good to hear Michael Mcdonald... I'm go find "Real Love" to hear Michael again..... :)

  • @TheIncognito62 chasing the dragon refers to heating up the drug of choice,,,opium, heroin,,meth etc. on aluminum foil or the such and then inhaling{sp} the smoke that curls up.....the dragon WILL bite you.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheIncognito62 Yes, that's exactly what it means.

  • Love it!!

  • dis song makes want to shoot up and listen to it all day

  • great lyrics, love this song

  • It's the beard on my face

  • Going to see Steely Dan tonight at the Mn State Fair. My favorite band ever.

  • saw them this summer in Canandaigua NY and can you BELIEVE it but they played this one after opening with a jazz blowout and then AJA, when this came on my buddy and I looked over at each other and just let it out the whole song.... were standing between rows of parent-age folks who didn't budge the whole show--- hey you old fogeys let us 20yr olds show you how to groove at the Dan show

  • @weightfeather1 wow, that really struck a chord with me. thanks for sharing that

  • Perfection and grace!

  • This song is pure magic, but the real meaning of the lyrics sort of ruins it for me.

  • @xxZeroZonexx ....sorry its ruined, its a great song,,some of us chased the dragon AND got away ,,,with our lifes in tact.hard road.

  • another great job of crisp and incomparable blues, jazz, and rock combined into one by the best studio band I"ve EVER heard!

  • I'm convinced McDonald's backing vocals here was the inspiration for that bit on Family Guy when Peter hires him to sing back-up for the gangs conversations.

  • Quite possibly the greatest SD track. Perfection

  • Steve, thank you for turning me on to this!

  • Tonight when I chase the Dragon...the water may turn to cherry wine...and silver tunr to gold,,,outta time outta mind???

  • @weightfeather1 You know,I thing the classic place to be listening to Steely Dan is in a 240Z on a Pioneer supertuner cassette deck, driving on a warm evening down 280 south of Burlingame. In My mind, for some reason those cars and this music just go together with the times..

  • due you blew it he must think ur a real idiot

  • Santa Monica Syncopation

Daddy said that cool jazz is better than medicine

breeze soothes the heart and soul

slows the mind, lowers the blinds

so you can close your eyes and sleep smiling all night long

  • Elegant, classy, happy, relaxed, ready to dance... feel like the you know what... ready for the world... all kinds of emotions come to me, what a song. And its compressed here, muddy, but you still get the musical impact, the mood just comes through. A masterpiece. Love iT!!!

  • It's perfection and grace people!

  • great bridge

  • Beginning drum beat is very similar to Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean"

  • @tmwood0410 Funny, I thought about that the other day when listening to TOOM. MJ probably used it as reference for the mood, Mike loved all kinds of music, I wouldn't be surprised if he brought this in as a reference for Billie.

  • This is such a brilliant piece of music. Steely Dan never fail to amaze me with their musical ability. This is real music.

  • thanks for sharing

  • Its a smile on my face, I got to see them perform this on July 12th 2011 ......tonight when I chase the dragon, What an experience I will never forget. I'm gonna roll with em till the wheels fall off. THANK YOU Walter Becker & Donald Fagen ♫oh yeah♫

  • My favourite guitar player played on this. Mark Knopfler!
