Why don't you start a Steely Dan tribute band and only play songs from Can't Buy A Thrill? Cause you caustic opinion only serves to make you look shallow
@bloykunker you know what, YOU are a tool for thinking that this is the same glorious dan that gave us can't buy a thrill, countdown to ecstasy, and pretzel logic. if fagen and becker told you to jump off a cliff, would you? i think you would. the dan i know and love is dead, and he died when denny and skunk were thrown out of the band they lovingly created

As a kid born in '71, I had just a small notion of who/what Steely Dan was. As an adult I've come to realize that Steely Dan is the greatest band of my generation.
"Time Out Of Mind" exlemplifies why Steely Dan is so damned good.
I listened to it for the first time about 2 years ago... and it immediately became my favorite song... and probably will be my favorite song for the rest of my life.
I love the bass guitar in "pop" music. Any suggestions?

First off, stunning track. First understood the descending brass lines in the chorus while passing out after half a bottle of sambuca! But I have a question which I'd like to share. Why does it say "light in my arse" at @2:49? Is it just me who hears that? Theres no way thats a mistake! I think one vocal track sings "eyes" over the other vocalists "eye". I personally think a sarcastic dig at that scene, as in it's the light in my eye? My arse.....
Shit.. You guys make me feel old (Haha) 4:30am would kill me (Even with really good Coke.. Which would have been my preference before i gave up such things) But it's nice to know we all appreciate good music :)
Originally "Chasing The Dragon" was going to an Opium Den and partaking, however with the advent of tons of Heroin to all parts of the World. Opiate users do not have to chase the dragon to China, India or other parts of Asia, as it is available in speedball sufficiency. If one chases the dragon over a period of years, the onset of death is not far behind.
WELL, IF YOU MUST get twacked out this is as good a soundtrack as any.... but i prefer listening to dan jams while enjoying a vape or puff of the herb that is so dear to me.
Comments are all cool, the spectulation....can be whatever....."its the smile on my face" I am a true Steely Dan fan 37 years, so one could say that I have alot of great moments in my life of Donald and Walter, Time Out Of Mind is about Chasing the opium dragon, one of many of the best ever done. ♫Tonight when I chase the dragon, the water may change to cherry wine and the silver will turn to gold........ time out of mind♫ can't hear it enough.
vaporizing, using tinfoil , a straw and a lighter is referred to as "Chasing the Dragon" because you had to follow, or chase the vapor as it burned up the line.
I believe "chasing the dragon" refers not just to smoking opium or its derivatives, but to the pursuit of the ultimate high, which can one can never quite attain.

This was a great album...come to think of it all their albums were great. I think they remind me of the 70's more than any other band for some reason, of course they were all over the radio back then, great days to be alive.

@zcg3 lol what an understatement, I am 57, been to hell and back and still alive and kickin.......So I appreciate talent, good musicians, people who can read and play music.........my granpa and cousin played for Bob Wills..........my dad played jazz so I was born into some great music of everyones time and I dont know your stats and it doesnt matter. Now when I hear "...perfection and Grace" it really does put a smile on my face. Grew up on Steely Dan. Great music.
I had a 280z - copper - my boyfriend's always drove it under similar conditions - yes, I hope everyone we all were close to in our lives before the world got to us is happy too...
man! first time i ever heard this was on a boom box i bought used off this guy for 30 bucks ,it worked like crap till i got bout half mile from home then this comes on nice and clear man im jammin, than george benson ,s gimmie the night comes on.
@weightfeather1 I understand. You've gotta great looking forward perspective. What lies behind is behind. For better or for worse, I just tend to be nostalgic and sentimental. I guess there's probably a good balance somewhere in the middle. I loved my life's experiences in the past and am sometimes wistful for them. But I know that I must be thankful for the present and I am. I enjoy the dialogue, Weightfeather.
@weightfeather1 I hear you. A lot of "what ifs" in life. I guess that's what makes it interesting. Reminds me of the poem by Robert Frost "The Road Not Taken." Have you tried to locate Chrissy on Facebook or other such social networks? No need to answer if I'm being too nosy. I'm just curious and nostalgic by nature.
@weightfeather1 Great story. Life is amazing light that. What memories music evokes. I wonder if you have any melancholy when you are reminded of that day and memory.
@TheIncognito62 chasing the dragon refers to heating up the drug of choice,,,opium, heroin,,meth etc. on aluminum foil or the such and then inhaling{sp} the smoke that curls up.....the dragon WILL bite you.
saw them this summer in Canandaigua NY and can you BELIEVE it but they played this one after opening with a jazz blowout and then AJA, when this came on my buddy and I looked over at each other and just let it out the whole song.... were standing between rows of parent-age folks who didn't budge the whole show--- hey you old fogeys let us 20yr olds show you how to groove at the Dan show
I'm convinced McDonald's backing vocals here was the inspiration for that bit on Family Guy when Peter hires him to sing back-up for the gangs conversations.
@weightfeather1 You know,I thing the classic place to be listening to Steely Dan is in a 240Z on a Pioneer supertuner cassette deck, driving on a warm evening down 280 south of Burlingame. In My mind, for some reason those cars and this music just go together with the times..
Elegant, classy, happy, relaxed, ready to dance... feel like the you know what... ready for the world... all kinds of emotions come to me, what a song. And its compressed here, muddy, but you still get the musical impact, the mood just comes through. A masterpiece. Love iT!!!
@tmwood0410 Funny, I thought about that the other day when listening to TOOM. MJ probably used it as reference for the mood, Mike loved all kinds of music, I wouldn't be surprised if he brought this in as a reference for Billie.
Its a smile on my face, I got to see them perform this on July 12th 2011 ......tonight when I chase the dragon, What an experience I will never forget. I'm gonna roll with em till the wheels fall off. THANK YOU Walter Becker & Donald Fagen ♫oh yeah♫
Love the back-up vocals from Michael McDonald!

I wonder if you have any melancholy when you are reminded of that day and memory.

saw them this summer in Canandaigua NY and can you BELIEVE it but they played this one after opening with a jazz blowout and then AJA, when this came on my buddy and I looked over at each other and just let it out the whole song.... were standing between rows of parent-age folks who didn't budge the whole show--- hey you old fogeys let us 20yr olds show you how to groove at the Dan show

This song is pure magic, but the real meaning of the lyrics sort of ruins it for me.

Love iT!!!

Beginning drum beat is very similar to Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean"
tmwood0410 7 months ago
@tmwood0410 Funny, I thought about that the other day when listening to TOOM. MJ probably used it as reference for the mood, Mike loved all kinds of music, I wouldn't be surprised if he brought this in as a reference for Billie.
