@Aspect2010 no offense but how is audi, VAG's main focus? there are more concepts and upcoming vehicles coming from the vw line more than any other of their divisions and porsche recently bought the majority of VAG "2 years ago or so". while they are all one now porsche doesnt take any engines or components from VAG and does everything separately from VAG. The only vehicle that was and still holds porsche's design from looks to engine layout is the original beetle no other vw.
@Aspect2010 i understand the two differences in the companies. while the golfs moved towards more grocery getting cars. VW made this golf to bring back the original spirit of the original mk1 and mk2. all in all i love VW's but subaru makes some excellent vehicles and heck they make adapters to put Subaru flat 4's in the old air cooled VWs.

Has Subaru ever fixed the brittle gears of the WRX transaxle yet ? My transaxle in my '06 WRX that I purchased new in Dallas broke TWICE in less than 18K miles and one year old before I traded it for another make of performance car, and I am on my third new car(BMW 3series coupe)since then. Subaru would not cover it under warranty($6K cost), so they lost a customer for life, or at least several new car purchases.

To be fair, the GTI is underated in power. It might be only 210 HP or whatever, but it gets good numbers at the wheels.. where the WrX is only on par with what its suposed to get.
I love how none of these reviewers contemplate how much heavier an AWD system makes a car. Couple that with the initial weight of the WRX and the fact that the GTI is FWD and anybody could've told the outcome.
I never said I could beat her... But I've seen her and Tiff Needell racing together(same car, taking turns) and she sucked big time. She kept falling behind and Tiff would make up ground on the switch. If we're talking pro drivers then yes, she's crap and I don't trust her ability.
She's more than good enough to be consistent, and that's all you need to do a comparison like this. If a better driver can go faster with the WRX, that driver will go faster with the GTI as well, and the GTI will still win the comparison.
The 2008 WRX was underpowered and wallowing. By the time you factor in the drivetrain losses on the AWD system compared to the much more efficient FWD delivery on the GTI, I wouldn't be surprised if the GTI had the actual power advantage.
You could be right, the '08 WRX was a piece of crap... not just underpowered but soft. I'll always have doubts about this test but respect your opinion none the less. Subaru came back well with the '09, which was a weapon. The MY11 is likely quicker than any Golf to date, including the R.
The R32 was mostly hype. The engine was heavy and underpowered. The Golf R will be a different story, since it's using a much lighter 2.0T. The R will be faster than the WRX. More power through a more efficient AWD system on a stiffer chassis.
But we won't be comparing it to the WRX because it's $33k price tag will put it right in Evo and STI territory where it will play a rather familiar role: the slightly less hardcore yet beautifully refined option for the more mature driver.

The R will be faster will it?? More power? NO! The MY09-MY11 WRXs are all but fractions of a second slower than the STi... nothing in it. Very accomplished car, which will show up the 50k+ Golf R as well as many cars double the price or more. The R won't keep up with the STI, EVO.. forget it. Refined? VW more refined than the Japanese? Well, only the interiors bud.
Where did I say the R would keep up with the STI and EVO? I said it would be the less hardcore option in the segment. Like the current GTI compared to faster cars like the Focus ST or Mazdaspeed 3.
And yes, these days, Volkswagens are more refined than most Japanese cars. You know those plastic molding strips that cover the seam where the roof attaches to the frame on your Japanese car? VWs are one solid piece made with laser seam welding.
Ah yes, but you still refuse to rebut your case that "The R will be faster than the WRX". Well, I've proven the WRX is more powerful, show me the evidence to suggest that despite this FACT, the R is quicker? Mr. Self proclaimed 'realist'... surely you have some 'real' data to back that up, no? Japanese cars are still outperforming Euro for durability and cost, which they always have... laser seam welding or not.
And it's highly misleading to say the WRX is only a fraction of a second slower than the STI. We're not talking drag racers here. The extra $10k the STI costs all goes into better parts. Iron suspension parts versus aluminum. If you talk to people who have driven both on real roads, they'll tell you that the WRX reaches its limits far before the STI does.
So, in the real world, I would expect this order. GTI < WRX < Golf R < Evo < STI < Non-US Spec Evos & STIs
If that's your opinion.. fine. The Golf R to me is a fantastic package no doubt, but in '09 when Subaru hotted up the WRX(primarily from bad press and the Ralliart), it beat the STI of '08... it was a drastic change and still likely to be faster point to point than the R. Of course, Golf drivers aren't going to be all about 'speed', or they would have purchased an STI... The Subaru interiors are crap and have always been, VW the opposite. Depends what you're after. Japs quicker.
The small power to weight advantage you're talking about disappears when you factor in drivetrain losses, because Subaru's beefy AWD system is less efficient than the new haldex in the Golf R. Want an example? There's a video of an Evo and an STI being dyno'd back to back. The Evo had more wheel HP even though the Subie had the higher flywheel HP.
The Golf R's AWD can send 100% HP to back wheels like the GT-R. WRX can't do that, so it will understeer where the Golf R won't.
Where is the video? That's irrelevant here anyway. The current(MY11) WRX would carve the GTI up in any shootout if we're talking SPEED... track or 0-100, no comparison, too much power. In other news, I'm looking into an APR ecu upgrade for my Golf. Even on crappy California 91 octane I can bump up to 250 hp and 294 tq. The maps are selectable by using the cruise control functions while parked. How cool is that?

If you actually knew a third of what you think you know about cars, you wouldn't be surprised by the outcome of this race.
The WRX is heavier, equipped with softer, heavier suspension components. It has a very inefficient powertrain that soaks power. And finally, its stock tires were absolutely terrible in 2008. The GTI, in contrast, has always been equipped with properly tuned suspension. It is able to get more power to the ground out of it's FWD setup than the WRX can with its AWD.

To be fair, the GTI is underated in power. It might be only 210 HP or whatever, but it gets good numbers at the wheels.. where the WrX is only on par with what its suposed to get.

I love how none of these reviewers contemplate how much heavier an AWD system makes a car. Couple that with the initial weight of the WRX and the fact that the GTI is FWD and anybody could've told the outcome.

She's more than good enough to be consistent, and that's all you need to do a comparison like this. If a better driver can go faster with the WRX, that driver will go faster with the GTI as well, and the GTI will still win the comparison.
The 2008 WRX was underpowered and wallowing. By the time you factor in the drivetrain losses on the AWD system compared to the much more efficient FWD delivery on the GTI, I wouldn't be surprised if the GTI had the actual power advantage.

You could be right, the '08 WRX was a piece of crap... not just underpowered but soft. I'll always have doubts about this test but respect your opinion none the less. Subaru came back well with the '09, which was a weapon. The MY11 is likely quicker than any Golf to date, including the R.

The R32 was mostly hype. The engine was heavy and underpowered. The Golf R will be a different story, since it's using a much lighter 2.0T. The R will be faster than the WRX. More power through a more efficient AWD system on a stiffer chassis.
But we won't be comparing it to the WRX because it's $33k price tag will put it right in Evo and STI territory where it will play a rather familiar role: the slightly less hardcore yet beautifully refined option for the more mature driver.

Well, only the interiors bud.

Where did I say the R would keep up with the STI and EVO? I said it would be the less hardcore option in the segment. Like the current GTI compared to faster cars like the Focus ST or Mazdaspeed 3.
And yes, these days, Volkswagens are more refined than most Japanese cars. You know those plastic molding strips that cover the seam where the roof attaches to the frame on your Japanese car? VWs are one solid piece made with laser seam welding.

And it's highly misleading to say the WRX is only a fraction of a second slower than the STI. We're not talking drag racers here. The extra $10k the STI costs all goes into better parts. Iron suspension parts versus aluminum. If you talk to people who have driven both on real roads, they'll tell you that the WRX reaches its limits far before the STI does.
So, in the real world, I would expect this order. GTI < WRX < Golf R < Evo < STI < Non-US Spec Evos & STIs

If that's your opinion.. fine. The Golf R to me is a fantastic package no doubt, but in '09 when Subaru hotted up the WRX(primarily from bad press and the Ralliart), it beat the STI of '08... it was a drastic change and still likely to be faster point to point than the R. Of course, Golf drivers aren't going to be all about 'speed', or they would have purchased an STI... The Subaru interiors are crap and have always been, VW the opposite. Depends what you're after. Japs quicker.

The small power to weight advantage you're talking about disappears when you factor in drivetrain losses, because Subaru's beefy AWD system is less efficient than the new haldex in the Golf R. Want an example? There's a video of an Evo and an STI being dyno'd back to back. The Evo had more wheel HP even though the Subie had the higher flywheel HP.
The Golf R's AWD can send 100% HP to back wheels like the GT-R. WRX can't do that, so it will understeer where the Golf R won't.

I will wager $1 that the Golf R is at least a second faster around this sort of track than the revised WRX. The Evo and STI will smoke it for sure. But don't be surprised when the reviewers say it's the one to go with, they do it every time with the GTI ;)

Your 100% power to the wheels theory is ludicrous, so there is literally nothing to suggest that the R would be quicker. If the reviewers want a nice interior for Euro prices then fine... I don't. They don't factor durability or ongoing costs either, where Japanese have always toppled Euro..

In other news, I'm looking into an APR ecu upgrade for my Golf. Even on crappy California 91 octane I can bump up to 250 hp and 294 tq. The maps are selectable by using the cruise control functions while parked. How cool is that?
There's a shop less than 50 miles away that can do it. Very tempting :)

Sounds good... wouldn't be surprised if the Golf takes a considerable power increase in it's stride, great chassis. Not sure if torque steer comes into it w/power increase(for the FWD GTI), I've never read complaints about it before. I am actually not a WRX owner but looking at a MY11. In AUS the R is another 20k... too much.

If you actually knew a third of what you think you know about cars, you wouldn't be surprised by the outcome of this race.
The WRX is heavier, equipped with softer, heavier suspension components. It has a very inefficient powertrain that soaks power. And finally, its stock tires were absolutely terrible in 2008. The GTI, in contrast, has always been equipped with properly tuned suspension. It is able to get more power to the ground out of it's FWD setup than the WRX can with its AWD.

The 2009 WRX got a huge boost in power and better tires. the 2011 WRX gets the wider stance from the STI. I would think the 2011 WRX would be more likely to beat the GTI.
