@zck7 I doubt they expect you to use a stylus; however, I'd have thought this was more a positive feature. Few hand-held devices have them nowadays and I'm sure they would be far more useful than fingers on a touchscreen, also for handwriting recognition &c.
@zck7 Frankly, I don't see why. I am sure the option of having a stylus would be far more useful for modern portable devices such as tablets, which could then have some sort of notepad 'app' or employ handwriting recognition for word processors- far more understandable than having an on-screen keyboard. And no mucky finger-marks on the screen.
This could work in addition to using fingers- it's perfectly possible to do that instead of use the stylus on my old PDA. Keep multi-touch/. too.
Because people lose styli just like they lose pens. Because it's awkward to use one compared to fingers. Lots of reasons. We're descended from monkeys after all, which likewise prefer a finger over a stick.
@zck7 1. And yet pens (sometimes quite expensive themselves and not worth losing) are not obsolete.
2. Awkwardness depends on the situation. Thing is, if your interface is just one big touchscreen, it makes tasks such as things involving writing harder (without a virtual keyboard taking up half your screen).
3. I'm not going to start getting into creation-evolution debates here, but it's fair to say that even chimps have been known to use sticks and other simple tools, as have other ape species.
I agree, the virtual touch screen is undesirable. I prefer to use a real non-chiclet keyboard, and I've found writing software to take the virtual keyboard's presence into account is tedious. But as mainstream OSes become more & more restrictive due to "security concerns" (listen to the latest Security Now episode for more info, it concerns sandboxing) my wish for a decent portable Linux based device only increases. I used to think Android devices were that; not so sure any more.
@zck7 Besides I think the Pandora is quite a unique device- not many palmtop computers with a built in keyboard these days either, *and* with built in gaming controls too! So why not include a stylus?
@XenusParadox Another ad-hominem attack, which you are resorting to because you are not a person of quality and you know I'm right when I say the Open Pandora is a useless device that squanders the potential of Linux and that the focus on gaming is childish and pointless.
@zck7 well focusing on gaming isn't childish or pointless there are people out there who go crazy for that stuff. and one thing you have proven is you are not an angry person and yet you need to give people an opinion and people need to give you an opinion. however we are on the Internet and childish is the game.
In my experience, gamers tend to be emotionally immature more than the general population is. While one can say that this doesn't imply that gaming is an activity for children, most games do provide contexts that reinforce emotional immaturity, narcissism, a tendency toward cheating, escapism and cowardice. I'm not the first person to point this out by any means -- it's pretty obvious.
@zck7 do you yourself play video games? well it sure is better than kids going out doing drugs and causing harm to them selves or others. video games have proven to be a great way for kids to interact with stuff and yes video games do cause people to become stupid if played to much however if you think that the people who play them are immature you sir are a little wrong. it is wrong to generalize people from past experiences or what you have seen
its a really nice device, but when you take into account that it has a full keyboard and control pad, there's really no point for a touch screen imo, if they took away the touch screen it would shave a lot off the price
@xxchimakaraxx I beg to differ. A touchscreen makes a better menu navigator than a mouse pointer controlled by a pair of nubs. Plus, with the touch screen, there's the possibility of it being taken advantage of in games. It is a gaming device, after all.
@ironhawk10000 Are you sure the touch screen is that expensive? It's a normal resistive touch screen, the same kind the Nintendo DS uses. Now, I know very well that the DS was probably sold at a loss, but the original DS retailed for not much more than the GBA SP (something like $110-$115 versus the GBA SP's old $100, later dropped to $80). I'm not saying I know better than you, I'm just wondering where you're getting the "$70" statistic from.
@onpon4 no im not but for the loss of that big of a feature im sure the price would drop significantly . the few touch screen laptops iv seen cost easily 100$ more than a normal laptop.
id honestly, just buy this to browse the internet when im out, my netbook is complete shit and only lasts under 3 hrs and i paid $300 for it and it can barey hold 4gb smh. YAY FOR LINUX.
they where nice 4 years ago but after delays and shit for 500$ i can get mutch better umpc hardware. if they upgrade to a snapdragion tigra setup maybe i would play thag kind of money.
Where can I buy this in the USA? The official site only gives EU links. If you are going to sell one of your Pandoras (for less than full price, naturally) then please tell me.
@Airking1105 1:Well, you can basically download anything of the web like a normal computer, but there's only linux pre-isntalled so you can just use linux programs;
2:The Devs mentioned something like that last year (they ran an unoptimized one at around 6-7 fps) but they haven't said anything else after that;due to pandora's open nature it's still possible that someone else makes one
3:It's not mass manufactored by a big company, so the price won't be going down for a while
is it true that this device comes with it's own hard drive space? like you don't have to have a sd card or anything unless you want "extra" space. And can the other emulator play in fullscreen haven't see any demonstrate that yet.
The Pandora has a little bit of room on it's NAND (basically like an internal, expensive and fast-as-all-hell USB memory stick) but it's really not enough to put more than one or two applications on it.
The main idea is just to use a few SD cards- you could get two large ones for a bit of cash, or many smaller ones and just swap them about. Hell, you can even use some portable HDDs.
And yes, I think every current emulator (they're made by the community, not official) supports fullscreen.
Ok, just so that people know, the reviewer actually chose a game where the ghosting is most noticeable. The majority of the time, those issues aren't there at all.
He chose Metroid to _show_ you all the ghosting issue. It's like someone highlighting a typo in a text- the point is not to suggest that the flaw is the worst thing in the world, but to show that there is a flaw there.
Guys, get over the ghosting issue and actually enjoy the games. Its about games, not about a display that may not be as good as your desktop monitor or CRTs. All small lcd's ghost a little bit. Heck, even my older desktop LCD ghosts. Guess what? I enjoyed crysis on it.
The Pandoras display is fine. The old emulated games (here Metroid) are the problem, they have harsh contrasts and dotted/dithered graphics. Nightmare for every lcd.
every video I've seen shows really noticeable ghosting in 2D games. Of course those are exactly the kind of games you'd want to play (MD, SNES, PCE). @kbuzzred i agree with you on the huge pricetag... but there are other handheld emu's that handle older games better, but take into mind that this is not just a console, it's more like a very small laptop that has the capability to play a LOT more games than any other handheld (and most consoles) and is only slightly larger than the ds. i'd definetly get it if it was cheaper
Unfortunately there isn't a handheld out there that can emulate the classic consoles at fullspeed, has good controls, and a screen that doesn't ghost or tear. This was supposed to be that system, and somewhere along the way, community input turned it into the frankenstein it is. Granted the pandora will be able to do many things, but it wont be very good at any of them. Been following this since the beginning, and can't express how crushing it is to see it turn into what it is.
@kbuzzred i get what you're saying, but on the other hand, it might not be the device's fault at all, maybe it's the emulator or the roms themselves. i don't really know much about that topic, but i've seen gameplay from other emulator's on the pandora and it looks simply amazing. especially n64, nes and dreamcast, but then again, that's my personal opinion, and if it wasn't so outrageously priced (like the new psp will undoubtedly be) i would order it today. there's still room for improvement!
I'm afraid its been confirmed that it is the fault of the lcd. Tweaking the gamma can help a bit, but it will always be very noticeable. Of course, many wont even notice at all or be bothered by it. But it's likely that they don't know what the games are supposed to look like in the first place.
