  • hahaha lol 2:30 keeps messing up the sync hahahah!

  • this band is great. I'm gonna buy this album,if i can find it in the US.

  • I saw Eagle vs Shark, instantly fell in love with Phoenix Foundation. Greetings from Mexico!

  • If you love this, you guys will love the acoustic session they did on our music channel. Go check it out!

  • hello! listen to this new mexican band, it is called Sessil with the song "Wait, Old Age Goodbye" ... Hope you like it!

  • Love this, now I want it to be summer. Bugger.

  • Who's the kid on the bike???he's mean

  • I'm really high and this is awesome.

  • I love this! I want to be Taika when I grow up. I have a couple of questions if there is anyone that can answer for me please. What camera was used? what was it mounted on....and, how many takes did you do? thanks

  • Top tune, great video. Maybe my favorite video ever. Yea, there are loads of other videos that feature the lead singer walking, in one shot… in fact we were having fun trying to list them all in the office. So what?! This is still one of the most imaginative and well executed of them all. Kudos to all those involved, 40 years!

  • Double Genius.... the Phoenix Foundation and Taika Waititi!

  • themelodees new band from south of england

    the website is a .com

    check them out

  • He must be pretty tired.... especially if there was more than 1 take

  • Fantastica.

  • What was the camera on to get the tracking shot?

  • If this is what New Zealand has to offer musically would you kindly throw some more over the ocean please, and stop hoarding it for yourselves. New favourite band (and all thanks to Eagle vs Shark - which coincimentally is a new favourite film!)

Love from London, we all have been thinking about you and the tragic events in Christchurch. xx

  • The video reminds me of Roots Manuva - Witness the Fitness! Classic...

  • Cool

  • Citizens......do not underestimate this man, not for and instant...... he ran through my town (delvin in co. westmeath) let all the children loose, swang into stacks of cardboard boxes and flung shows and empty barrels round the gaff.......hes a one man hurricane...................if he comes runnin, you go hiding...i havent seen the likes for about 40 years

  • love it! such a good video

  • any idea whereabouts in NZ this was made?

  • you can totally see taika waititi's film style in the video.. i LOVE the song LOVE the video :) i made a little cover video myself but obviously my playing cant even begin to touch the original! theres just something about the phoenix foundation that always puts a smile on my face and gets me reaching for my guitar, god bless em :P

  • anywhere i can find the chords?

  • Who cares bout people comparing the two vids - Coincidences do happen, two different comics called Dennis the Menace featured in Newspapers in the US & the UK on the SAME DAY by PURE COINCIDENCE. This is a great video in it's own right and freaking out over it is pointless! It's also a great song. Videos like this are the ones I hope to make/crew on in my future in the industry in NZ. Keep it up guys!

  • Thomas Coffey and the Phoenix Foundation are not the only bands to have single-shot videos with people jogging/running. Bernard Fanning did something similar, as have Radiohead. Old ideas inspire new ones, even if we don't realise it at the time. So yeah, get over it.

  • Taika Waititi is so good!

  • Taika Waititi is so good!

  • its good promo for thomas coffey - like everybody else here - no one had EVER heard of him before the taika video. its interesting. i belive it is a blatant rip off - but how does it hurt coffey - quite the opposite.

  • Such an under rated song. I put it up there with my all time kiwi favs. To me it's got that great Flying Nun 90's sound to it. A true classic! Great vid too. Can't wait to see them at the Power Station tomorrow night... wahoo!! bring on the good times!!

  • :D Thanks for posting these videos

  • That was the most genuine music vid I've seen in a while, I'd say that was a good laugh to shoot! Awesome vid for an awesome song

  • Chur! Great song and entertaining video, Taika's a legend! :)

    O for owesome.

  • please come play a show in Toronto! You guys are tits

    -Dave

  • taika is a cool guy. imean that genuinely. not sarcasm

  • that was sweeeeet!

  • NZ has absolutely cornered the market in charming alternative pop music. It's very odd but they are the fucking best at it.

  • WOOO! im in that

  • Awesome vid!!

  • Love this song and forgot about the video. Gold star to all!

  • Best Kiwi vid ever?

Surely the wine talking, but, far out...

  • Loves it!

  • whats the album?

  • 'Happy Ending' its available on Flying Nun records from all respectable Record Stores.

    churr

    sam

  • Happy ending - get it it's fricken sweet

  • This is a brilliant song and video

  • Fuck I can't wait to come home!

  • I can't believe that people think it would be a conscious rip off--rather "tall poppy syndrome". The community of people who produced this video are never short of ideas, so why would they turn around and rip someone elses off? As for consciously aping Thomas Coffeys outfit: anyone who has played Touch, or soccer, or seen Taika going for a run, would know that he has been rocking the three stripes, head bands and dirty moustache for years.

  • Sure, they're similar, but there is no way Taika would rip something off so blatantly. As for the mo, I'm pretty sure I've seen Taika on TV with one before. If you are going to rip off an idea, you rip off an idea - the tracksuit and mo aren't an idea, they're a look. The idea is a single continuous shot of a jogger with an series of obstacles... which isn't original anyway. See the opening scene of Birth starring Nicole Kidman - then ask yourself How would I make this funny?

  • Love both videos/songs. Perhaps Taika could give a shout out to Thomas Coffey (maybe he has). I'd rather see 50 videos like this than the never-ending line of identical rap/pop/dance videos. Maybe the Coffey and Phoenix supporters on here can start up some gangster east coast west coast war thing where Thomas and Taika get taken out. Thomas can sell heaps of records posthumously ala Tupac and Flight of the Conchords can do a tribute cover of the Exponents I'll Say Goodbye for Taika

  • If you like this video then watch the original. Thomas Coffey "A Memory Of You". it's listed in the Related videos on the right hand side.

  • You are so right, dude - well spotted.

Just as an aside, in the tracksuit he looks really like everyone who lives in Manchester, UK. Expect they're fat and normally tooled up. And they hold their guns sideways when they hold-up 24hr shopkeepers whilst trying to nick 20 fags and some disposable nappies for their bastard kid. Apologies if you're from Manchester. Like that total mentaller Larry galagher from Oasis

  • Hi guys... I posted a video response to this.. it's called lollies. I think that scroteypoo should go check it out. I think he will like it. I love lollies, I hope he does too.. he needs to go chill out and eat some lollies.

oh.. oh oh... I also have a video about bulldozers if anyone's keen to watch that too? Please guys!

  • Most sensational song/video ever! Absolute Genius.Yes, I'd very much like more lollies...

  • whatever the discussion between scroteypoo and arrenco, who cares? from someone who only knows this director and band from Eagle vs. Shark, this video is spectacular and of the highest order!

  • I really love this video. Fun, and hey Taika is in great shape, woo!

  • haha love 1:26

  • Christ... He even has the dirty porno mo'... Farken hell...

  • Well thats interesting, taika has always been inspirational for me, Good to see he is only human.

not that cool if he takes credit for the idea...Maybe its so similar its a wink to the other video clip?

  • honestly dude, get over it. None of us saw the other video! If we never saw it it's not a rip off.

  • Gee thats substantiated in its defence isn't it? More and more people are realising you've infringed intellectual property riights.

  • Scroteypoo sit back down before you make a further idiot of yourself. Coincidences do exist, sir. It's like when you read an album review where the reviewer says that rift A by band A on song A was taken from rift B by band B on song B, when in fact it's entirely possible it was a coincidence. You need to take these things with a grain of salt, grats to you for finding a similar video but stop trying to smudge public opinion of it since the makers obviously hadn't seen the other video. Moron.

  • Anyone on Class A's can recognise this is a rip... I know Taika had seen the video of Memory of You prioir to this one being made. Logan McMillan from Gorilla Pictures (director of Memory of You) and Taika know of each other from film school, or at least are familiar with each other and are relative admirers of each others work. Both Logan an Thomas Coffey are not that pleased their idea was used in this video. Alas; there really is bugger all you can do about it.

  • Comment removed

  • Who the fuck is Scroteypoo? I bet its Thomas Coffey. I am Logan - I directed the Thomas Coffey video. I don't think the Phoenix Foundation video is a rip off at all - I think it's great. The video is similar but shit happens. Stop talking shit and using my name as if you know me or what I am thinking. I have never met Taika in my life and he probably doesn't admire my work at all. You are crazy. Leave me out of it.

  • I guess immitation is the highest form of fattery though, but still, it goes to show an abject of originalty as it has been claimed as being therefore bereft of cenceptual genius it is getting hailed for. Please understand - it is not a coincidence. I'm not swaying public opinion anyway. You can see how many people are blissfully ignorant and probably do not give one iota.

  • Besides, YouTube is a public forum and I have every right to illustrate and/or opine and to state fact - which is what I believe is the right thing to do. What are you? The thought Police?? The Internet Censorship Nazi??? Fuck off you brown noser.

  • Good work, you've read Nineteen Eighty-Four...how deep and intellectual you are. The fact remains that you can't prove the other video was seen before this one was made irrespective of how much 'true' information you pluck out of nowhere. I think the only 'brown noser' on here is you to be quite honest..go read some Shakespeare and work out some decent insults so you don't have to resort to 'Fuck off' next time. I feel like I'm talking to an idiot child because your posts reek of stupidity :(

  • Oops, I meant "riff" instead of "rift"...that comment must have been written late at night D:

  • too much team fortress huh?

  • This is not just about the fact that both feauture a guitar in each video. THE WHOLE ENTIRE CONCEPT IS THE SAME AND THE MEANS UPON HOW IT WAS EXECUTED IS IDENTICAL. Are you then suggesting the ADIDAS 3 stripe was a last ditch decision along with the entire look of the protagonist doing all that he does, was also suggested the night before production of the video began?? Guys, its a rip. Plain and simple, no matter how much you sugar coat it and claim blissfull (aka bullshit) ignorance.

  • That was responding to EarthlingProductions deleted post.

  • Its not a Rip off because a Rip off implies something that is inferior to the original. I.e Reeebok shoes that fall apart after 3 months.

This video is an improvement to the other one.

  • Wow, I admit that the similarity between the videos is freakingly similar, but as someone who was on the crew on the Phoenix Foundation video, I can attest to the fact that none of us knew about the Thomas Coffey video. It is just a freaky coincidence. No offense to Thomas Coffey, but I didn't even know the guy existed. And, if you think about it, why would someone rip of a video in such a blatant manner as we are being accused of? To do so would be to open yourself up to horrible accusations!

  • Totally, there is no way that this video was deliberately ripping anyone off. I think Taika and the whole crew did an awesome job making a really fun video and all these accusations are starting to wind me up!

  • Exactly, I wouldn't dare believe that anyone who worked on the video to be that stupid... How could I or any other naysayers for that matter have the audacity to leap to such conclusions based on the irrefutable and abundant evidence both videos serve up??? Was it Taika's idea alone?

  • Comment removed

  • Perhaps you were foolhardy enough to think no one would notice, given the 'apparent' anonymity of Thomas Coffey and his song/video?

  • lyall bay!

  • Well there is no way for me to prove outright that they did not see the video proir to making it so I have to 'believe' that based on what they have spoon fed me. However; I am led to conclude that perhaps the Phoenix Foundation themselves were not so much aware of Thomas Coffey's Memory of You video as opposed to the director who may have seen it and decided to use it.

  • The similarites/ideas are appallingly similar NOT to be purely coincidental. You have to admit that at the very least. I'm sure if everyone actually watched both videos - people would see my point. I sincerely do not believe it was coincedence that they happen to be practically the same thing with different music, SUBTLE differences (within respective videos) aside.

  • It's a rip off... cool song but its a rip off

  • awsome song guys. thanks alot for the vid!

  • Goddamn haters, I guess tall poppy syndrome is still strong...

  • No hatred being brought to be here sunshine. I never said I hated it. Its just not original in its video execution. Its a rip, Please do not confuse context.

  • I suggest people watch Memory of you by Thomas Coffey video. This Phoenix Foundation video has basically stolen the idea for the video. Shame.

  • Hey dude, Yeah i saw that video recently....after we made this one. It is quite similar sure, but I can honestly say that we did not steal the idea. We just had no awareness of it.

...and they're are plenty of differences in both these vids....

    thanks

    sam

  • you could just as well say that Thomas Coffey stole the idea from U2's Sweetest Thing video. you retard.

  • Comment removed

  • Sweetest Thing? Fuck off you moron.

So you're saying that a guy, running to get to a finishing line, ecountering a "tonne" of obsticals/distractions and getting a change of clothes in the process in a continual shot, sporting an Addidas 3 stripe complete with head band and slight 'fro... Sure mate.

Please take into account - the song kicks ass. Its a great song, just the video is not nearly as cleverly put together and original as people are led to believe.

  • ...

  • im from chch, where is lyall bay?

  • wellington

  • LOVE this video!! I really miss Lyall Bay. I'm a Kiwi in London and am really hoping you come over here at some stage, and please bring Fly My Pretties over with you!!

  • I second that, please come

  • I wish you could rate stuff higher than five stars. I had the stupidest smile plastered all over my face from start to finish, which I guess is something Taika does to people. And another fantastic song, I will definitely seek out the album immediately :]

  • Wow - Was that all done in one shot?

    Incredible Oner!

Well done vid, Taika, and a nice happy song; This is definitely something I would want to listen to on a sunny Sunday morning. Just heard of these guys after watching Eagle vs. Shark and me likey.

  • Yeah - shame its not original. Watch MEMORY OF YOU by THOMAS COFFEY. Came out 2005. Same exact thing. Sorry to burst your bubble.

  • What an excellent song and ace video! class that, absolute class.
