Love those big Continentals and Grand Marquis. The LTD is OK, but this was the honest to God 70s and you really got what you paid for, so the Cotinental rules.
my lincoln is black, same year moon roof with black leather...yours started really easily....before you installed the new ignition module, did it start that easy?? mabey ill look into that~
The way that we always started my mom's '76 was to pump the gas 2 or 3 times, then hold the gas pedal about the third of the way to the floor while turning the key. This set the automatic choke, and once the engine warmed up, we'd quickly depress the gas pedal again, which took the engine down to normal idle.
if you have to let the car warm up for 10 minutes then theres something wrong. also along with closing the choke pressing the pedal puts it on fast idle and the second time you pressed it that is kick down to regular idle.... the choke automatically opens according to exhaust temp, coolant temp OR via an electric choke heater.
When setting the automatic choke, you should press the pedal firmly to the floor, not "stab" it. It's OK to do that when disengaging it. Since the car is over 30 years old, and COLD, it may be good if you pumped the pedal 2-3 times before cranking. You won't flood the engine, and the engine will probably not stall-out so quickly! I have British heritage myself.
Beautiful car man. I remember riding in one of those when I was about 5 years old...it could very well have been a 79! It was funny because I kept sliding down in the back seat...the leather was slippery! haha and I was pretty short so that didn't help much.
y'know, where I come from, back in those times, it was a sign of wealth to own one of these....and my grama and grampa had one. Now their done with it and its MINE!
not sure why your seeing smoke, but the car was started after sitting overnight. You can tell because the doors on my headlamps are open, and that only happens after it sits for a long period of time, as there is a leak in the line.
YESSS I saw the smoke 2!!! AND OMG HE TALKS WAY TO MUCH!!! Shut up and start the damn car already and U dont have 2 let it run for 5 min in cold before taking off... Hogwash. People that oen these type cars own as a toy or 2nd or 3rd car... Get a new one and rattle on about it... a new one for him wold b a 1990 lol. Not boasting but Ive had a 1989 a 1994 1996 2003 and 2009 BLUE ONE!!! My fav was my `1996 no car rides like that one did..
Love your videos. I own the same Lincoln model. Starting it is still a big problem and it runs pretty rough and hesitates a lot. I'd love to see a carb shot in your next video to compare as you start it. Would it be possible? Do you have problems starting it from time to time? Thanks!
Glad you like the videos. Starting has been a very big problem. I had the carb cleaned out when I first got the car after it sat for 20 years, but I am still having issues. Mine is also running rough. Hopefully it just needs adjusting but who knows. I will try and make a before and after video when I take it to the shop
Now that the temperature is getting chilly, it takes a considerable amount of time to start my Lincoln and make it runs more smoothly. Needless to say that it hesitates a lot and stall very easily. Hope to hear news from you soon because I worry a lot about those problems. Take care.
Very Nice, I noticed it looked like the clock was still working, which most of the time back then clocks did not last long in a carDid you have to replace the clock? I had a 77 Cougar XR-7 with the auto heat and air and I thought it had a Bi-level setting where you could have some heat coming though the vents. Maybe I did not hear right. but I thought you said heat would come out only at the lower ducts. Nice car, thanks for sharing with us.
Beautiful car indeed. I bet the power steering is amazing on that massive cruiser. Is the action on the brake pedal easy? I ask because i drove a 69 Continental with suicide doors once and the ease of the pedal caught me off guard at first.
I love that with these old Fords. You could turn the whole wheel with a pinky finger and if you hit a pot hole you would never feel it through the steering wheel. And yes the brake pedal was so easy on your feet. Everything was over-assisted which I though was great. Thanks for sharing your nice car with us. Looks like your electric choke is working correct if you only need to pump it once.
Thanks for the info at 3:30 I have a 1978 town car and it cuts off like you said when you take off I was told I need a new carburetor put on it but I will try what you said Thanks
Nice, solid car. Most cars made by the Ford Motor Corporation nowadays sound like sissies when they start up, but this one is good, fierce, and lets everyone know that SHE is in charge! She started up relatively smoothly...I was expecting it would take a long longer.
And completely unrelated, but I LOVE your huge Union Jack key fob!
It's not the choke that opens when you push down the pedal after it starts. It's the accelerator linkage coming off the fast idle cam. Try replacing the fuel filter and adjusting the carb to spec and you should be able to drive with out heating it up long. These old Fords have a lot of vacuum lines that can leak and cause rough idle and stalling. Don't forget to check the lines to climate control and headlight doors. Could you show the engine in your next starting video?
I usually dont have any problems with it starting. The only reason I let it warm up a long time is because it takes a while for the cab to heat up. I had the car tuned in August and many of the gaskets and lines were replaced. The only thing I havent replaced are the headlight doors. There is a very small leak that can cause them to rise after sitting for 2-3 days. I will post a video of the engine soon! thanks for your comments!
Thanks man for the vids. I own a 79 Collector Series so I'm familiar with what you go through with yours...even changing out the fuel tank. They are GREAT cars and completely understand your love for yours!!!
Ask and you shall receive. Uploaded a few pics and "a ride." Not quite as elaborate as yours but awful cold here at the moment. The winter pics were taken today.
stalls hesitations gas tank leaks bumpers known to rust and fall off old shitty smells im 19 and ive had two 79 lincolns a red and a blue both sat for over 5 years and ran like champs. best car ever i gota find another i sold both mine
Now about the heat thing all you have to do is once you get the heat going, what I do is turn the switch to "VENT" and set the temp to "HOT" and bam, you heat out of the vents. Very simple!!
Same here, not that I don't like 60s or 50s cars or even earlier, but I love the 70s because it was a time when people cared more about luxury, power and size, and not about speed or fuel economy. These cars are also pretty easy to get too, if I could actually store this one, I would get a caddy or a cutlass supreme!
lol, don't feel too old! The car is pretty modern for it's age. At least I think so. It has power everything, heated mirrors, and air suspension. Thanks for the comment!
please not: crankitandfloodit is a very strange person who will try to make you do videos to support his strange foot fetish. Do your self a favor, and block him. He will only bother you more and more. Thanks everyone else for the great comments! Its obvious who has the good taste and who doesn't!
Great video of the 8-track and start-up! I know on my car you can get heat from both the dashboard vents and the floor outlets if you put the control on "hi-lo".
i like lincoln town cars it hurts me to see them rott in peoples yards though:)

your climate control selector should have a hi-lo setting. If it does, air will blow out the vents and the floor.

Most vehicles during this time period have problems starting due to failed vacuum systems. Dry rot is a major problem.

A minute or two of warming up might be more than fine for your Kia, but not with these beautiful classics.
I'd wait at least till the thermostat opens and make sure the water is circulating by touching the upper radiator hose.
Keep her rollin!
