They are know to be over 200 million years old. They have been around for maybe longer. They are consider a living fossel. I dont know the life span of the horseshoe crab but some grow to be huge and weigh many pounds. The only preditor that I know know of are birds (the Sand pipper) Also the only places they go to breed are the Delaware and New Jersey Coasts. I know this because I live there on the Jersey shore. What an amazing creature...

@33dgtp It is pretty common to see dead ones on a beach because the go far out of the water to spawn at night, but If the don't make it to the water by sun up they'll sadly die, Unless they are in wet sand which the one looks like it was in dry sand. That is why he died. Poor guy
