I was thinking the same thing about the mountain bike idea at my local muddy cyclocross race until I read the rules: drop bars and skinny tires or go home (unless you want to race in the beginners class).
@MultiNotyourbusiness Never seen anyone win on a mtb but I know this uy who finishes about halfway and he rides one (well he rode the last race of this season on a proper cx bike). I would say its really only the weight that makes the cross bike better ;)
These guys should all try some motocross training and some Mountain Bike training. It would improve their lap times and lessen their soreness after a cyclocross race.

Two things: lower your seat post a bit, and go faster.
And maybe take some mountain biking lessons instead of trying to ride "street style" on dirt.
