Opinions are a dime a dozen and that leaves a lot of room for mouthy know it alls. The first question one has to ask is 'Where were you when the children suffering from Muscular Dystrophy needed help?'. Jerry Lewis stood up and did something about getting the needed help for the children. This man took on the corporates and you for Labor Day weekends to tell us these children's story and their needs. Where are you when the sky turns black?
But I had a grandmother who died from Als and I think mister Lewis has done a great job so quit bad mouthing him of course they are trying to cure for those diseases
Absolute lie. I would expect more accuracy from the AP. Jerry did not retire. "Retiring" is voluntary. Jerry was FIRED by MDA, he was KICKED OFF the telethon.
Obviously RE Lubber, you have missed quite a bit in break throughs and news about the research they have succeeded in. As an uncle of an MD nephew, I can say the MDA and Jerry Lewis's contributions to raising money, not to account for all thier partners,, have always made a difference in my nephews lives. BTW,, we are dirt poor
I've had mixed feeling for yrs about the telethon. While I commend Lewis for getting it started, he's been on for 45 yrs and there's been NO CURE. Sure, the kids get better treatment, new facilities and equipment than before the national exposure of the telethons, but I thought the idea of it all was to FIND A CURE. And in the process, the doctors, hospitals and medical mfrs have ALL GOTTEN RICH. You wonder if they REALLY do want to FIND A CURE.
I suppose its easy to sit on the sidelines , critisising , being cynical and doing nothing. Jerry Lewis made a difference in peoples lives. The critics made nothing , nada , zilch . Game over Jerry 10 critics 0
Since everybody else is imputing their opinions heres mine, I never really liked Jerry Lewis and was always a Dean Martin fan but the MDA was Jerrys I think
@carolp2011. Where does this hate on for Jerry Lewis come from. The man was a comedic genius and is a damn good samaritan? Really I'm missing something?
Well - It's about TIME for this shameless shill to go!!! He's been exploiting these poor patients for as long as I am old and every year on the telethons claims, "We are thisclose to finding a cure for these horrible diseases"!!! BS!!!! And he never had the b**ls to say why he even was doing these telethons! Kept claiming the reason would be revealed after he dies. What a cop out!!! They should just COMPLETELY end the telethon already!!! Can't sing "You'll Never Walk Alone" either! Goodbye JL!

A hollywood legend with a slowly fading star. Mr. Lewis has done great comedic movies and stand up comedy routines, but his lasting legacy to me is his charity work which he has done for over 40 years. At 85, he deserves the right to slow down his work schedule even if that does include no longer hosting the telethon.....hopefully he will continue to make a short appearance each year, a replacement?? Drew Carrey or Wayne Brady?? Good luck and best wishes Mr. Lewis.
@Zoink555 Aww, yeah if you ever work in entertainment you'll have a hundred thousand people who'll assume you're their ticket in (speaking of which: if you ever do go back, send me a line ; D)

@Tenderoni2011 Actually, a lot of the hate seems to be coming from people with disabilities, who find him patronizing.

What bullshitt!
We have to face the facts, 'A patient cured is a customer lost'.
That $59 million would be sorely missed by the parasitic medical community
There's money in medicine and they'll fight to keep people sick and dying... way more profitable than curing diseases.

@Truthiness231 Most of the people on TV were scabs and always looking for a free handout or holiday.
