the captain scott. the most beautiful vessel i have ever been on. shame it got sold to some rich arabs, and not kept for our future generations to live and learn the experience i did.
dec74. i think that may have been me who dropped the boom that day.but i always thought i dropped it on the bridge? but overall the experience of that whole month will stay with me happily forever.
Excellent piece of archive film and I think that it will be veiwed many times now that the Onedin Line drama series is being repeated, this ship was mentioned in the end credits recently.
I am so happy to find his video. I always wondered what happened to this ship. I was on its maiden voyage from Buckie up to the Orkney Islands then across to Stornaway then down to Plockton. We were a small crew of 18 kids from schools all round Scotland. Its was the trip of a lifetime. Very hard especially as 3/4 of the crew fell sea sick including the cook!. The watches were 4 hours on 4 hours off. A beautiful ship and fun to sail in it. Thanks for uploading.
I sailed in Dec 1974, from Loch Eil, Fort William. I remember the showers with water pumped directly from the sea. We had expeditions on Mull, Dura and Arran. One night we had to take shelter in a harbour off N. Ireland and was boarded by the British Army and searched. Once we dropped the boom and smashed it on the deck. We also failed to drop tyres over the side to cushion a manoeuvre which ripped the pier and damaged the hull. Many fond memories and what an adventure at the age of 17yrs.
Brings back memories. I sailed on her in June/July 1972 from Plockton on the west coast of Scotland round Skye, the Isle of Man ending up in Holyhead. We had 2/3 days climbing in Arran, the Lake District. We were asked who was scared of heights when we went on board. I said I was and was given the Top Gallant sail to work. That is the topmost square sail...it only cured me for the time I was on board.
Great film, my dad sailed on the Captain Scott in Jan/Feb of 1973. He has very fond memories. Wasn't the tragedy that a crew member jumped off a mast and drowned? This resulting in the owners being sued in 1979?
Dad actually managed to see the Captain Scott this year when he visited the Tall Ships Race in Liverpool. She is now known as 'Shabab Oman' and is a sail training schooner for the Oman Navy. She has a crew of 47 and fully refurbished to an outstanding condition. A tribute to its owner.
Thank you so much for including this film. I was a crew member in the September 1972 expedition. We sailed from Hollyhead in North Wales up as far as Stornoway (getting caught in the Minches in a force 7 gale) then over to Lochinver and then South to Skye, and Plockton. We did landfalls on Arran, Rhum and Kintail - seriously SERIOUSLY tough stuff. What happened to the Captain Scott was an absolute tragedy. I still have the red duster which was awarded by Captain Victor Clarke on conclusion.
Laurimer - This film really brought back memories. I was on the Captain Scott for a month long cruise in 1975 and also recall visiting Rhum, Arran and the Isle of Man, Port Rush...a truly wonderful experience. I was very lucky. I've always wondered what happened to her. You said it was a tragedy - what happened?
I used to go to Buckie for the summer hols in the 80's, have many happy memories of the place, the Candy Box, Cluny Square, Wyndy walks, going to Cullen beach. Haven't been for 12 years, will have to go back some day.
