@David44763 Oh, i forgot to mention, my friends and I are X-Gen- we thought the film was timeless. Now I wonder what the Z gen think? Ummm, I understand that this 'Gen' thing is a pretty bloody big brush to be weilding.
It is a big brush, but we need some point of reference in order to talk. I always preferred calling GenX "Generation 13." The 13th generation born in this country after European immigration.
But isn't The Big Chill more for Baby Boomers? (Which I suppose would be Generation 12)
Its a baby boomer movie...nothing i can relate too since i'm an x. But its a good movie though. I watched The Lather Effects movie that was supposed to be the generation x big chill movie but not half as good.
Every time I watch The Big Chill, I am in awe of how much the characters remind me of my parents and their old group of friends. That is one of the things I love about it. It is as if the writer and director spent a lot of time with them and took notes.
What is it about the movie that pisses some people off so bad? I don't understand. The characters are not bad people, several of the actors are Oscar nominees, and deep themes are involved. Plus, the soundtrack is awesome. If you don't like it, then whatever, but why the hatred?
ALSO - it was one of Kevin Costner's first movies - but he was cut out of it!!!
At the very beginning - the mortician is dressing the body of their dead friend buttoning his shirt sleeves combing his hair. They cut most of the original scenes his face is not shown that was Kevin Costners part he played the dead guy!!!
Thanks for posting this, this is really 1 of the greatest movies ever made.
My favorite scene isn't on this youtube but it's the scene where they get stoned then the next morning Jeff Goldblum drags himself into the kitchen and says to Glenn Close "are we the 1st ones up" you have to see the movie to understand that scene though. The Weight by The Band is playing in that scene and it's the best.
i dedicate this movie to my mother i remember her going to bed to this movie everynight. She passed away on feb19th 2009 as she lay dieing i bought a copy into her room and as she passed she passed i had this movie playing for her. I love you momma you are the best.
ok...but it seems dated and not too relevant anymore. Would anyone under 30 think this movie is that "cool"? It happens to all of us...we think the things that relate to our younger years are great. It was at the time....
I'm not so sure about that. Many people -- regardless of their generation -- reach a point in their lives when they ask questions like these: have I wasted my life, what happened to the ideals I had when I was younger, etc.
And there are many people who ask all sorts of questions after someone they know commits suicide. If you don't know how that feels, congratulations.
I don't think this is that dated. A real human story can be timeless.
cannot watch this film enough, the soundtrack cassette is still in tape player in my car, though now it is several cars later since the cassette is so old.
Wonderful Movie! Hard to beleive it has been 25 years! I just watched this last week-as I often pull it from my library of movies and enjoy it all over again! They don't make movies like this anymore!
I too love this movie. It ranks with Casablanca and Gone with the Wind in my top three. There are so many great lines in this movie. I still use them. Great to see that there are others who appreciate this great movie.
This is also my favourite movie! Great soundtrack, unbelievable cast and I often quote this line: "You're so analytical! Sometimes you just have to let art flow over you." In Finnish though:).
I don't know about that Joel guy, but absolutely everything else you said about the movie is correct! I STILL quote that great line about funeral receptions; "strange custom; they throw this really great party the one day they know you can't be there!".
I actually kinda liked St. Elmo's. Now it seems like a time capsule of the early 80s, but when it came out, it seemed too unbelievable: if all those good-looking Georgetown grads had self-indulgent mid-life crises at 22, then they should be dead at 44.
I did like the prostitutes speech about wives and paying for sex though.
The 80s had some rocking good films! Films you can't erase from your head.

...no matter how hard you try. I'm not thinking of this one, of course. More like HOWARD THE DUCK or MANNEQUIN.

Wow. You summed the movie up really nicely. A lot more negative than I would have said, but as soon as I read it I realized it was spot-on.

FUck this movie. Movie about pretentious douches for pretentious douches.
videogme 2 years ago
Well, I can't say if you're pretentious, but you do seem like a douche yourself.

"pretentious douche."
What is that, vinegar and water that claims to be champagne?
jlmww 2 years ago
haha very witty
A pretentious douche can be many types of people. In this case its the self-righteous who identify with the "boomer" culture.
videogme 2 years ago
Maybe we identify with the boomer culture because we're actually part of it.

Brilliant movie by 80´s.
I love much this movie.
Great actors like TOM BERENGER, GLENN CLOSE, WILLIAM HURT, KEVIN KLINE and others... KEVIN COSTNER naturally.

This is my favourite Costner film. For once, he didn't say a single line in his "aw, gee, shucks" kind of way.
