I just found out from the Wiki that the main author for Clannad, Jun Maeda, specifically wrote Mai and Makoto's story to be a sad one:
"When working on Kanon with a similar goal, Maeda worked in depressing elements to the two heroines' stories he wrote for: Makoto Sawatari, and Mai Kawasumi."
The "similar goal" is that Maeda had started a gaming genre (Visual Novel) known as the "crying game" and wanted to create the same affect after the sucess of his first one: One: Kagayaku Kisetsu e.
Mom is dying, Mai brings her back to life, people discover that she has powers, they use her in shows, people get discusted thinking shes not human and ostracize her. She feels lonely until the day she met Yuuichi. Her only lifeline to the social world leaves (Yuuichi leaving when vacation ended 7 years ago). Mai has mental breakdown and becomes almost completely autistic.

I just finished Air and I must admit, I didn't like it much until the episodes about the thousand summers ago. Air, much like Clannad (according to some people) is a slow starter but picks up later on. Clannad will always be my favorite.
You know, Key, the company that draws and produces the anime, makes such moving, sad stories that really change your aspect on life. Clannad, Kanon, Air, and Angel Beats are all prime examples of moving stories. I love it all, and I'm glad to have seen the majority of them.
Should I watch this anime? I mean, I watched Clannad and After Story and I had teary eyes half the time I was watching. I'm afraid that would happen again and I wouldn't be able to let go of it.
How should I put this... One of the best animes I have ever watched...and that is saying quite a bit. I haven't watched Clannad because of how sad it's supposed to be. Not gonna lie, I cried multiple times during Kanon, but I say...worth it. Every last minute.
Besides maybe three or four episodes, it's all fun and games and hilarity. I think it outbalances the sad.

I had just finished watching Kanon and now I'm moving on to Air. I plan on playing the Visual Novels for both Kanon and Air once I'm done with Clannad's. All I know is, when I went to view this masterpiece of Clannad, the top comment said, "And so it begins*grabs a box of tissues*"
And that's when I realized that when I was watching Kanon, at certain points (last 3 or so episodes of Makoto story, and somewhere around ep 20) I cried and my heart felt like it was being force choked by Darth Vader. And I couldn't sleep sometimes. This kinda shit affects me for reasons that I do not fully understand.
@tim2slimjim Don't get your hopes up too high. The first season of Clannad isn't sad and is also EXTREMELY boring. It's almost not worth the watch just to see the 2nd season
@tim2slimjim I just went googled clannad english sub and looked through the list of anime sites that have it. I prefer "watchanimeon" over the other sites.
The first season is definitely sad and not extremely boring, thought its less sad than After Story. There's a lot more comedic relief in the first season. Don't know what THESuperstuntman is talking about... 0.0
I found a guy here on youtube that has full episodes of both seasons subbed. It's working out fantastically so far. For anyone who would like to know, it's 4enfyra4.

Aw each time I hear this start crying even when I play it on my iPhone. But even tho I was very sad about this one I think I cried more on angel beat then any other anime even clannad. Angel beats just got to me I crying even before the show got towards the end the poor stories behind those students was just heart breaking.

@marshimarorules Yes, all of them have their sad parts, but like every Key anime, they have their funny parts as well. I've watched all of them, and they made me cry like a little baby. They all had deep meaning behind the plot and lessons about life. Every single one of them. All of them have fantasy sprinkled into what would otherwise seem like a normal plot and thats part of what makes them so good. You realize in the end how the earlier aspects fit into the anime. @Jaxter0987 You wouldn't believe my light bulb moment when I finally understood in all its entirety why Angel Beats was called Angel Beats. And the few scenes in Clannads intro in the first season suddenly becomes insane spoilers if when you finish watching Clannad After story. Key is just amazing, there's no question about it.

Seeing Makoto lose her humanity is really similar to how my sister got jacked up on all kinds of drugs and became schizophrenic. It's really sad knowing someone you love and grew up with is never going to be the same again and you have to practically "go along" with what they're doing much like how Yuuichi was going along with Makoto as she was losing her sense of being human. I've never cried over my sister's condition, but typing this now makes me tear up. It's hard accepting my sister's fate.

Clannad was based on a game, the ending is the ultimate end of the game after you collect all the special light balls (the magical balls that represent peoples wishes). So the whole story is designed as a "replay" from the very beginning, that's why Clannad is so cool, watch it again and see all the foreshadowing, the balls show up to be collected--after he gets enough the wishes are fulfilled at the end. How does Nagisa know this dream to make it into a play if it all hadn't happened before?
In my honest opinion, I think that Kanon is WAAAAY better than Clannad After Story. Because at least Kanon didn't had a bullshit ending like Clannad After Story had. And it's nothing but a copy of Kanon.

Because in other animes such as Grave of the Fireflies, Air, and Elfen Lied, it acknowledge death as something that you have to accept in life. Characters just don't just magically come back. Plus, the only sad moment in Clannad After Story ***SOILER ALERT*** is when Nagisa died. When Ushio dies, I just admited that they're trying way to hard to make everyone cry. I'm sorry but that's my point of view.
@AeroMaster150 I totally agree, but i understand why they made a "happy ending" because the after story was depressing enough itself, and many people does not understand that it needs to be done to make a point :P but btw, i think the sadest moments are when he thinks back on Nagisa who died, and not when she and Ushio actually died. Despite the ending, i think Clannad is one of the best animes out there, and thats my opinion :D
i think vampire princess miyu is the saddest anime/anime's character-she's vampire(more like an immortal vampire) with no friends, except her companions, yet she's a guardian who send shinma back 2 the darkness & protect the good.<<<<the origional artist died 2 in the 90s. dying-reincarnation-repeat-seems less depress than just living on continously. anyway, i like air too. i think kanon & clannad must be good 2 if since they're from the same creators.
@quiblyful Clannad came AFTER Kanon, and was a complete copy of it. Therefore, whichever you watched first, you will prefer. I hated Clannad, because it was a more depressing and slow version of Kanon. Trust me, theres the awful food made by the mother, the fox-human, the immature blonde guy, even the characters look the same. Key needs more creativity.

@umbreonabsolmoon Yes, Kanon is very good, and it's very similar to Clannad. To be honest, I find Kanon a little better than Clannad, but that's just my opinion. But if you're planning on watching this anime, you'd better buy lots of tissue boxes, because this anime will make you cry waterfalls. ;_; It's the only anime that's managed to make me cry...
@emilylovesluna Nayuki is the second girl you see, and is the one with long dark blueish hair and she is the protagonists cousin, Ayu is the first girl you see, She has short brown hair and pink/red eyes and an angel wing backpack, Shiori is the third girl you see, she's got short light brown/grey hair, rarely seen in a school uniform mostly wearing her Shawl, Makoto is the fourth girl you see, she has long red hair, Mai is the fifth and last main girl, she has the longest hair.
@LordofCruxis Yuichi is the male protagonist, the rest are support characters one is a guy the rest are girls usually pertaining to another specific main girl, an example is Mai and Sayuri, who are rarely seen apart, or Nayukis mom

Seeing Makoto lose her humanity is really similar to how my sister got jacked up on all kinds of drugs and became schizophrenic. It's really sad knowing someone you love and grew up with is never going to be the same again and you have to practically "go along" with what they're doing much like how Yuuichi was going along with Makoto as she was losing her sense of being human. I've never cried over my sister's condition, but typing this now makes me tear up. It's hard accepting my sister's fate.

Clannad was based on a game, the ending is the ultimate end of the game after you collect all the special light balls (the magical balls that represent peoples wishes). So the whole story is designed as a "replay" from the very beginning, that's why Clannad is so cool, watch it again and see all the foreshadowing, the balls show up to be collected--after he gets enough the wishes are fulfilled at the end. How does Nagisa know this dream to make it into a play if it all hadn't happened before?

In my honest opinion, I think that Kanon is WAAAAY better than Clannad After Story. Because at least Kanon didn't had a bullshit ending like Clannad After Story had. And it's nothing but a copy of Kanon.

Because in other animes such as Grave of the Fireflies, Air, and Elfen Lied, it acknowledge death as something that you have to accept in life. Characters just don't just magically come back. Plus, the only sad moment in Clannad After Story ***SOILER ALERT*** is when Nagisa died. When Ushio dies, I just admited that they're trying way to hard to make everyone cry. I'm sorry but that's my point of view.

@AeroMaster150 I totally agree, but i understand why they made a "happy ending" because the after story was depressing enough itself, and many people does not understand that it needs to be done to make a point :P but btw, i think the sadest moments are when he thinks back on Nagisa who died, and not when she and Ushio actually died. Despite the ending, i think Clannad is one of the best animes out there, and thats my opinion :D

i think vampire princess miyu is the saddest anime/anime's character-she's vampire(more like an immortal vampire) with no friends, except her companions, yet she's a guardian who send shinma back 2 the darkness & protect the good.<<<<the origional artist died 2 in the 90s. dying-reincarnation-repeat-seems less depress than just living on continously. anyway, i like air too. i think kanon & clannad must be good 2 if since they're from the same creators.

@quiblyful Clannad came AFTER Kanon, and was a complete copy of it. Therefore, whichever you watched first, you will prefer. I hated Clannad, because it was a more depressing and slow version of Kanon. Trust me, theres the awful food made by the mother, the fox-human, the immature blonde guy, even the characters look the same. Key needs more creativity.

@umbreonabsolmoon Yes, Kanon is very good, and it's very similar to Clannad. To be honest, I find Kanon a little better than Clannad, but that's just my opinion. But if you're planning on watching this anime, you'd better buy lots of tissue boxes, because this anime will make you cry waterfalls. ;_; It's the only anime that's managed to make me cry...

@emilylovesluna Nayuki is the second girl you see, and is the one with long dark blueish hair and she is the protagonists cousin, Ayu is the first girl you see, She has short brown hair and pink/red eyes and an angel wing backpack, Shiori is the third girl you see, she's got short light brown/grey hair, rarely seen in a school uniform mostly wearing her Shawl, Makoto is the fourth girl you see, she has long red hair, Mai is the fifth and last main girl, she has the longest hair.

This and angel beats have been the only shows to make me cry they are both extremely good animes. They r in my top 5 only bested by Gurren lagann, darker than black and elfen lied. Although you can't really compare them to each other if u haven't seen any of them I highly recommend it
