To not have compulsory schooling would have many negative effects; uneducated idiots, lack of social skills among peers, shiftless lazy kids, and kids with nothing to do, getting into trouble.

I would recommend John Taylor Gatto's book THE UNDERGROUND HISTORY OF AMERICAN EDUCATION and also Murray N. Rothbard's EDUCATION: FREE & COMPULSORY. These two books are closer to the truth.

In the 19th Century, compulsory education laws were mainly instituted by Protestants in order to reïndoctrinate Catholic children.
