As it happens though, the one in the video (EP-SHK) had an engine explode after take-off from Ahwaz around 2008, causing it to return to the airfield. It could have been much worse and the aircraft was damaged enough not to fly again.
The swept wing on the 707 really hasn't anything to do with that takeoff being long; rather, has to do with it being hot more than likely and a high MGTOW...winding em up witht the brakes gets the engines spooled up.
There's nothing like that beautiful boom of the JT3D's bellowing their jet exhaust, heard from behind the wing. This is a rare filming angle and I would cherish seeing a few more films like this, from behind the wing. The thunderous sound of the power goes right through you.
I don't think so, there is no room for that since the fuel tank is underneath. Most Chaff/flare dispensers are located at the tail section of a plane.
Those dotted rails on the wings are vortex generaters, thier function is to manage/optimize the airflow at low airspeeds/high angles of attack. They are still used on some aircraft today, and we standard on all 707's, both civilian and military. The 707 is still the most beautiful of all the passenger jets made, and I had many flights aboard them....Great video ! These are the last 707's in passenger service....
True, its still my favorite. I remember there were two Saudia 707s near my house in the old jeddah airport in Saudi Arabia. Anybody interested had access to it until they ripped them apart. I was so sad. I hope these babies keep flying.
The 707 requires a very long runway for take-off and landings, this is due to the highly swept back wing, which allows it to cruise at higher speeds. Due to that factor, letting the engines power up will allow for a more rapid acceleration and an earlier, safer take-off.
@RyanAndBurnett The swept back wing is part of the reason--but another part is simply that total power output at 19,000 lbs x 4 = 76,000 lbs isn't really all that much for an a/c with a gross TO weight of 336,000 lbs (compare to the 757-200ER: gross TO weight of 255,000 lbs and typically over 80,000 lbs total thrust!). An empty 707 could really kick ass on takeoff and be in the air in under 3,000 feet of runway. Its performance--like that of the JT3D-powered DC-8--suffered at high weight.
the 707 is not quite retired yet i dont believe, theres a few farfetched airlines in africa and the middle east that operate them, and a couple are in military and other use
There are 3 in PAX service with this airlines still going, and there are some on cargo in the third world. there is also the 707 deritives with the armed forces
Well actually, Saha air put all their 707's back in service in noverber '09 acording to wiki!! So they are not retired yet! And that is very cool for aviation enthousiasts:D
oh I LOVE LOVE LOVE take offs! I rememeber when I was little we went always by airplane, I was very scaried of those engine souds becoming louder and louder;)
Could anybody tell me what the Top Speed is of a B707-320? All I ever see posted including Boeing web site is .81M. Can they run .86M or so (I'm talking straight and level flight without overheating the engs, etc., but...if they need to get all the performance out of the 707 they can). I'm sure it can't do much over .86 straight & level...which I believe is the top speed of the 757-200. While the 747-400 can fly at .92M on the level, faster than the Hotrod 57, but the 757 has all beat on climb.
lol in the beginning you here the noise getting bigger bigger BIGGER and i thought that it would blow it up! it's like ssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH BOOM!
The flaps give more lift and a lower stall speed. As a result the plane can get in the air more quickly and safely, and is more controllable if it needs to maneuver suddenly.
can someone please explain to me (as I have no clue about flying) why the flaps are down for take-off and what the consequences would be if they weren't. TiA
B707-320B Intercontinentals had PW JT3D turbofans. The JT8Ds were used on DC-9s...I know, and I think the B727 as well. The 707 turbofan had around 18.000 lbs thrust. Same engine used X 4 on the KC-135 tanker (early 707 airframe) in later versions...no water injection needed, and X 8 on the B-52H Stratofortress (still in service next to me here at Barksdale AFB...ah the sound!!!). This is also the engine used on U.S. Air Force One and Air Force Two & VIP transport before the current pair of 747s
The thrust to weight ratio of early, turbojet powered 707s was bad, later ones like this one are not that underpowered anymore, but of course they are still unefficient, loud engines by todays standards...
I once heard there was an airliner somewhere in South America that also offered 707's passenger flights but I think that stopped? Got to love the 707, her sleek lines and fantastic sound she makes, her everything!

I know some people are worried about the fuel economy of the engines on a 707, but the black smoke that comes out the back is just a water being injected into the engine. But no, I cannot say it is a very fuel efficent aircraft. But still a great plane, like most of Boeing's. (Correct me if I'm wrong on that) :)
Due to their previous lives as military aircraft, the 707s have spent long periods in storage or only operating sporadic military missions, so for airline transports they have a very low number of hours on their airframes, about 25,000 hours each, meaning they may fly on for some time (the average life of a jet airliner is 100,000 hours).
Saha Air is an airline based in Tehran, Iran. It operates domestic passenger services with three 707s and occasional cargo charters with 747s. It was established in 1990 and is wholly owned by the Iranian Air Force. Regular domestic flights include daily flights from its base at Tehran's Mehrabad airport to Mashhad, Kish Island, Assoulyeh and its aircraft also make regular appearances at Shiraz.
Wow, I thought that the Boeing 707 had been put out of service, nice video thanks for it, but that airline shouldn't be using a 707 if it was used in the 1950's because the plane is probably getting old so you never know what could happen to it.
Oh, good one. Maybe you will miss the part when the president of Iran on board enacts his decree that all Jews will be wiped off the face of the earth! Hmm... will he use gas chambers or a nuke when killing Israel? Maybe he can bring Hitler back to life for some tips....
Lets just say, my father has flown on more 707's than most of you, and not just Qantas ones. With staff travel he's been on BOAC, Pan Am, SAA and Saudia Boeing 707's. NO BRAKES HELD ON TAKE OFF!!!
It gives a better start. Instead of having the plane rolling, while putting more throttle into the engines. It saves quite a distance. They do that with the big C5 Galaxy military transport plane too.
Yeah. I do that in 747s also. It just helps get the plane in the air faster, by not using up runway space while the engines are firing up. Almost all 4 engine planes usually do it. It just makes things easier.
Spend 13 years as a Qantas Flight Attendant, flying on 707's AT LEAST once a week and then you will now what a 707 take off is like when your not on a second rate middle eastern airline departing from a runway that is way to short for an old Boeing.
i dnt think Saha only serve the middle east. They could be coming from Canada to the middle east. How do you know this is Mashad? Why is there snow on the ground? Nd just becuase they are a middle eastern airlines or airport, doesnt mean they are a crap airline, or their airports are in disrepair. Stop being racist
yes, but you dont have to target them just cos their middle eastern. There are loads of crap Australian airports and airlines..theres loads in every country. Easyjet, air asia, virgin blue... Your just being downright racist
actually, emirates, etihad and qatar are all first rate airlines. however, Saha is iranian. it flies in and out of war zones. you cant expect them to be safe, especially with 30+ year old 707's
hmmm, But it shouldnt matter if they look after their aeroplanes? And whats the airline got to do with the airport? And by the way, according to the Skytrax 5 star rating, Only Qatar is the only middle eastern 5 star rated airline, the rest are 4 stars along with BA, virgin etc
qatar airways is a 5 star rated airline but emirates is the worlds leading airlines that flies over 80 international destinations and 300 international awards
and by the way etihad is also a 5 star airline!!!!!:-)
Hold up. it doesnt make any sense. Your 23 years old but you worked as a steward from 1966-1979... HUH? Doesnt make any sense. you should be 69 years old
well u half got me. i persoanlly am 23, but my father is 71. he was the flight steward, and helped my diss u losers who know nothing about 707's. next youll be saying its customary to apply reverse thurst halfway throught the roll, go bak, and do it again.
virginbluedude, I've got news for you. There are many situations where the brakes are held while the engines are spooled up. for example: John Wayne airport in CA. Due to short runway and noise abatement, that's EXACTLY what the pilots do. They even get on the com and announce what's going to happen. Maybe you never had to fly a short runway, but it DOES happen.

RichardKruspeKiksAss 3 years ago
The 707 didn't have very powerfull engines, the nacelles themselves are barely wide enough to provide adequate compression.
In fact bleed air had to be sourced away from the engine becuase the loss in thrust would be too great.
Turbo compressors mounted on some of these engines provide the bleed air.
No PMC's for these aircraft, full rated thrust all the way baby. Computer management at it's minimum no IRU's, IFR navigation at it's most skilled.

JamesBond1717 4 years ago
This actual plane was delivered new to the Iran Air Force in 1976.
A well-maintained old aircraft is as safe as a well-maintained new aircraft. The age of the plane makes no difference if it is looked after.

Hey! You missed the part when it gets hit by an american missle from an American navy terrorist ship illegally in iranian territorial waters!

NO BRAKES HELD ON TAKE OFF!!!
virginbluedude 4 years ago
Like I said in an earlier response, just because a FEW airlines didn't hold the brakes, does NOT mean they all didn't do it.
w5pda 4 years ago
hmm,i thought they are all meant to with the 707? during takeoff
Shakemagroovethangg 4 years ago
Qantas 707's (VH-EBO) were the best on the world.
virginbluedude 4 years ago
Why do they hold the brakes during acceleration?
polo8236 4 years ago
It gives a better start. Instead of having the plane rolling, while putting more throttle into the engines. It saves quite a distance. They do that with the big C5 Galaxy military transport plane too.
CobraMarty 4 years ago
Yeah. I do that in 747s also. It just helps get the plane in the air faster, by not using up runway space while the engines are firing up. Almost all 4 engine planes usually do it. It just makes things easier.
sixSICsix2277 4 years ago
the same reason that the drag race car drivers hold the front brakes, to maximize thrust at take off ( launch )
Jayce6470 4 years ago
They hold the brakes because it's a tradition in the 707
w5pda 4 years ago
ummm, no. ive worked as a steward about 707's from 1966-1979 and have NEVER experienced a take off in which the brakes are held.
virginbluedude 4 years ago
Ummm, yes. Do some research on the 707
w5pda 4 years ago
Spend 13 years as a Qantas Flight Attendant, flying on 707's AT LEAST once a week and then you will now what a 707 take off is like when your not on a second rate middle eastern airline departing from a runway that is way to short for an old Boeing.
virginbluedude 4 years ago
Just because a few airlines didn't hold the brakes like that, doesn't mean they all didn't do it.
w5pda 4 years ago
if this is a middle eastern runway, why is there snow on the ground? You twat
Shakemagroovethangg 4 years ago
Saha air only serves the middle east, and it is in Mashad.
virginbluedude 4 years ago
i dnt think Saha only serve the middle east. They could be coming from Canada to the middle east. How do you know this is Mashad? Why is there snow on the ground? Nd just becuase they are a middle eastern airlines or airport, doesnt mean they are a crap airline, or their airports are in disrepair. Stop being racist
Shakemagroovethangg 4 years ago
read the info, next to the video. the poster wrote it right there. it sez it clearly. its in Mashad. and research Saha Air. middle east only =D
virginbluedude 4 years ago
yes, but you dont have to target them just cos their middle eastern. There are loads of crap Australian airports and airlines..theres loads in every country. Easyjet, air asia, virgin blue... Your just being downright racist
Shakemagroovethangg 4 years ago
actually, emirates, etihad and qatar are all first rate airlines. however, Saha is iranian. it flies in and out of war zones. you cant expect them to be safe, especially with 30+ year old 707's
virginbluedude 4 years ago
hmmm, But it shouldnt matter if they look after their aeroplanes? And whats the airline got to do with the airport? And by the way, according to the Skytrax 5 star rating, Only Qatar is the only middle eastern 5 star rated airline, the rest are 4 stars along with BA, virgin etc
Shakemagroovethangg 4 years ago
please stop badgering me. im entitled to an opinion
virginbluedude 4 years ago
yes, and you are entitled to critism
Shakemagroovethangg 4 years ago
excuze me but u are TOTALY WRONG
qatar airways is a 5 star rated airline but emirates is the worlds leading airlines that flies over 80 international destinations and 300 international awards
and by the way etihad is also a 5 star airline!!!!!:-)

Hold up. it doesnt make any sense. Your 23 years old but you worked as a steward from 1966-1979... HUH? Doesnt make any sense. you should be 69 years old
pega57 4 years ago
well u half got me. i persoanlly am 23, but my father is 71. he was the flight steward, and helped my diss u losers who know nothing about 707's. next youll be saying its customary to apply reverse thurst halfway throught the roll, go bak, and do it again.
virginbluedude 4 years ago
May I be the first one to say.....SHUT UP! you do not make any sense at all. Speak english!!!
pega57 4 years ago
virginbluedude, I've got news for you.
