  • That place has been rebuilt and is fully operational today

  • 0:51

bottom left window looks like there's an arm holding the curtain?

  • Yep its getting pulled down as we speak :( went there about a month ago, all fenced off, demolition in progress signs all over it :(

  • did anyone notice the faint images of people in this and the figure shaped shadows pause it and go through it yourself!

  • @Esmegan2 just so you know, the one at 0:28 is a painting

  • Nice to have this building preserved in 'cyberspace' if nothing else.

Am gutted to see the weekly happenings here 'demo wise' since im here almost every day... so i thank you for this video... means a lot.

  • I would love to go to Chrery knowle...

  • @turbochrissie get yourself there... wont be there much longer. Still worht a visit.. though swimming pool has gone now

  • This makes me glad we have the psychotropic drugs we have now. They can remedy an awful lot of mental suffering, including delusion, mania and hallucinations - and there are still scary cases, especially in the closed units. But these abandoned places were built before the era of neuroleptics...they must have been sheer hell.

  • very hard to spend more than half an hour here now without getting clocked

  • 770 houses due to be built on lunatic hospital i hope a preist and exosist is one of them

  • 770 houses in the middle of a sump buying property on this site who is going to live on the site of murder torture and the brutal treatment of inmates i think we might see problems from demolition to the point of build something about cherry knowle

  • its soon to be demolished i know of a woman that had electric shock treatment in the 70s for mild depresion

  • Demo guys are in now... guess it was only a matter of time :(

  • no body will get underground real disturbed was kept

  • People were abused, suffered and died in these places.

  • OMG I LOVE THIS SONG...Sorry okay now I am sad.

  • I live in Sunderland and have been wanting to go into this place for years but never had the bottle... heard some freaky shit about being able to hear voices behind locked doors and a pure evil living in the chapel (of all places). To be fair a person with a severe mental illness can be dangerous, so imagine a spirit of one of these people... now imagine more than one spirit... not even sure if its still standing now to be honest.

  • My Grandmother used to tell me of single mothers being locked in here during Victorian times. Got inside & have to say that its an awful place. If you stand on the grass facing the chapel you can see how its been extended over the years. Says something for modern ways. The buildings away from the main unit are named after trees. Oak, Willow etc. Found out that people were placed in the corresponding building depending on your level of "insanity" Oak=No hope. Willow=Some hope. 2:54 is the morgue.

  • I love this song, it goes very well with this video. Makes me feel sad though :(

I had a relative that was locked up in one of these places for years because when he was younger he stole a toy car. He had no Mother or Father to look after him so they shut him away. It took my auntie many years to set him free and when he finally saw the world again he got a job at a foundry which caused him to get asbestosis. Tragic.

  • creepy!!

  • Why did it shut down ?

  • 0:51 Was that a dead hand sticking out of the window?

  • there is an uderground passage from one end of the building to the other real disturbed inmates were kept the hospital claimed it was for heating but you can see they are cells i remember going down 5 yr ago very spooky near the swiming pool

  • excellent video thanks!

  • Well done! Very effective and poignant.

People remember: This is how the government solves "problems." When force and coercion are used, there's always a mess left behind, literally and figuratively.

The voluntary and charitable way is always best.

  • Run... RUN FOR YOUR LIFEEEE!

  • why did they leave abandoned art behind?

  • omg...I've been here in my dreams. o_o

    I'm trippin out xD

and I love this song. :D

  • Nice work ;)

  • Videos of asylums always make me cry my eyes out for some reason. Just to know that so many people, although having experienced happiness and compassion, also would have experienced such fear and confusion in those places. To think of the people who were taken there, I can't imagine what they would've felt. To be shut off from society like that, especially back when mental illness was really misunderstood. The paintings in this vid really made it all hit home for me. Maybe I'm just weird :\

  • @sinfulmoose whats a asylum?

  • @gabekid123 it's a place where they kept people wth mental illnesses, n stuff

  • @gabekid123 it is a hospital institution for the incurable insane

  • @sinfulmoose . NO , you're not weird ! ;)

  • @sinfulmoose Your not weird at all, im a guy and when i see sad stuff like this combines with the sad music i tend to tear up as well.

  • whats this soong?

feel so pitty for all them people who were in there

  • whats that red thing at 2:23 - 2:25 ?

  • 1:51 is that a pool

  • @smithy847 you know its been abandoned since 2004 right?

  • @IsabellaGirl10111 No, it's around 1998 when it was in a state of complete disrepair.

  • i live about 5 minutes from this its creepy when you go in when the secruity guard is not there that is. also its weird that in one room, full of mirrors but not one them is broken weird or what.

  • Good place to put my pshycopathic brother!!! he stabed me with a KNIFE once:(

  • wow its like people buld buildings then abandon them...its like parents makin a kid then abandon them

  • NOW! might just be me, at 2:31, right hand side of the door, is that a figure or what?

  • @fing3rbang Looks like a woman dressed in blue but the white around her back looks like wings....an angel maybe?

  • this is sooo sad! ;( i was nearly crying!

  • i heard that place is haunted

  • @TheWaferbaby, Haunted for the special occasion;-

"Gee Todd, the car's broken down"

"It's alright Wendy, we'll just stay the night in that abandoned lunatic asylum.

I heard the janitor went mad and murdered everyone before it was closed."

    "Todd, I'm not sure."

"It'll be fine Wendy, trust me..."

  • that made me cry well dun well dun

  • @smithy847 how could everyone have broke out of their cells a couple of weeks ago when its been abandoned since about 2004?

  • dam nice place i wonder ho much rent is

  • nice place

  • When you visit this place it ain't the old parts you want to look at: it's the new extensions. You can see as the populations grown they've had to add new sections. Speaks volumes for the pressure of "living" in "modern" society.

  • wonderful.

  • That would be a great place to take depressing photography

  • looks like a crematory at 1:53

  • this is wicked disturbing

  • I worked there once.

  • same...

  • 1:02, the wall looks exactly like the cellings in my school

  • ere mate . theres nowt but evil in that place. keep away

  • the last half of the video the pics went too fast lol i wanted to see them more closely lol. creepy place i bet alot of people got tormented there.i wonder when it shut down for good?

  • go in after dark with one good friend ,tell me what you think after 5 hours in there during the night...the chapel has bad spirits mind so be careful

  • that place has always intrested me i live near there and i always wanted to go up there and look about

  • This is a beautiful one. Come check out my shoot of Seaview Hospital on my channel.

  • hope some of the people in here that died found a better place

  • wow i see it too

  • i live near that i always seem to stare at it when i drive bye.....

  • It seems a women bending over but it's like seeing a guy from the back that looks like Otto von Bismarck, he SEEMS Otto von Bismarck but he can't be.

  • my uncle used to be in here

  • Looks like i'm not the only one who saw the figure bending over at 1:21

  • @Jm66100 i can sooo see what ur tlking about... at the end of the corrider right!! creepy.

  • at 1:23 it looks like a woman kneeling at the end of the corridor

  • at 1:23 it looks like a woman kneeling at the end of the corridor

  • At 1:23 it looks like a woman kneeling at the end of the corridor

  • Those pictures in there, i think some people would pay big bucks for them, well at least i would. and why am i crying.. i guess the song isjust sad

  • My mam used to work in a hospital next to that, it's in rihope i believe, no idea how you'd spell it.

  • I didn't know that was in sunderland :O I'm in Low Fell in Gateshead, never heard of it, although i'd like to visit :)

  • makes me think of the house on haunted hill for some reason

  • 1:21 creepy

  • fondooky, why did you go there?

  • that places looks like its got some lingering vibes..

  • 2:07 looks like floating body

0:52 looks like someone pushing out the curtains

  • My uncle had to go to an insane asylum. I remember visiting him as a kid.

  • I was locked in that shithole in 78'

  • Really? What happened, how scary! I'm sorry...

  • me too^^

  • wooooooooah.. why?

  • Oh my god, why?

  • Someone has to make one of these films with a Pink Floyd Dark side of the moon back track.

  • i live in durham iwaana go

  • omg, I saw it too!! someone sitting down. I thought I saw alot of weird things through out da video!! Good video

  • On the red bed thing?

  • where abouts is this place

  • great job man, nice touch on the music, it gave the video a real sense of sadness and loss instead of just all creepy... 10/10

  • wtf??? 1:21 it looks like sombody siting down in feadle position or somthin

  • I see it ^_^

  • i saw that too. great video..

  • I saw it to i saw it straight away

  • I went to art school in a former mental institute. The school was brilliant, the buildings and grounds beautiful, the urban legends gave us something to talk about when drinking but of course the whole place was cleaned up, blessed and reblessed every time someone felt creepy zombie ghosts were watching.

  • i have a question what happened to this asylum. do you know why they decided to just abandon it?

  • Nearly all 102 asylum's in the uk when the goverment passed an act to release patients into the community. Only a small few remain open and most have been demolished and this one is soon to be demolished

  • 1:46 face in window

  • 1:46 looks like a face in the white window.

  • 1:46 pause in the white window looks like a face.

  • Good work mate loved the slideshow

  • wtf? at 1:21 wtf is that it looks like some kind of thing on the ground about to come at you

  • HOLY SHIT....dont stare att 1:21 for to long...it just stood up...my video was on pause...im hoping that it wasn`t...my eyes just played me a trick or something...i hope...freaky...

  • holy shit me too

  • Oh my...mine as well. Veryy odd.

  • I am visiting Henryton Sanitarium for my birthday this summer...I am preping myself... but Henryton doesn't look near as frightening as this place.

  • mental asylums freak me out big time

  • This place looks pretty interesting...and scary. Do anyone know how long its been since this place was abandoned? it looks like its abandoned at a more recent time maybe 10 to 15 yrs but I'm assuming its probably more at a later time.

  • keep all abandoned buildings alive!

    love em all.....

  • holy shit that 1:21 crouching thing is scary

  • creepy drawing at 1:52

  • i see it too at 1:21!!

  • is this place still up i heard from a friend who lives near ther that it was demolished i live like an hour away from it lol

  • at 1:21 there is a black figur crouchin down. creeeeeepy

  • What the heck is at 1:53 ? Is that a cremator thing?

  • 1:21 i can see something at the end of the hall way.

  • why did people leave buttons, pictures, documents and equipment? whee did the patients go?

  • I found it strange watching this film, as i know whats its like to be in these hospitals.........

  • The asylum's closed in the 80's and 90's because of the care in the community act of 1984

which moved the patients into the outside world

  • Really liked the angles of the pictures & I also think the music suits too.

  • The music suits the slideshow good work

  • Fantastic video, visited the hospital many times in my work in years gone by, and still love the place.

I agree with Mirry, the old hospital is beutiful and should never have been left to become a 'spooky asylum'.

  • If this strikes your interest, you should search "Lakeville Hospital". Its the exact same situation, only this one is in Massachusetts. And there are 3 of this kind in Mass (abandoned asylums)...It looks like they just up and left, and all the equipment still remains. I have actually seen some pictures of bottles of medication in some of the rooms, as well as biohazard waste (like used needles and bloody rags)...check it out.

  • My question is, why have plp not taken the equipment and other expensive/saleable items from these places??

  • 0:23 look all the way down the hall i think i see a ghost:|

  • great vid.. good music choice

  • in spain theres a whole (small) village abadoned , really cool , it wa abbandoned cos of pests or somthing....its pretty scary

  • I have always wondered why are buildings such as this one ever abandoned?, is it because of budget cuts?, do they find a better facility elsewhere to provide their patients a better service/ or it just for the sake of leaving them behind?, I can't really tell.....

  • Cherry Knowle was fucked, and weird stuff was happening there. Supposed to be haunted so they closed up shop and moved elsewhere, is what I heard.

  • the government stops paying for it

  • Usually Asylums Are Closed Because Authorities Found Out Of The Torture They Sent The Patients Through, Such As Sexual Abuse, Medical Experiments, And So On. The Things They Did To Patients Were Kept Hidden From The Public, But Once Authorities Found Out They Were Forced To Close. :] Hope This Answered Your Question.

  • The mental asylums in the uk ( all beautiful victorian buildings) closed in the 80's and 90's because of the care in the community act and patients moved out in the outside world.

now they've gone some mentally ill people even get put in jail!

  • lol i went to one abandoned in the 90s from london colney but there was like some kind of kids section i couldnt get in the proper one:( there was a asbestos hazard in some to XO

  • there are still mental homes a family memeber of mine is in one.

  • I wonder why are buildings such as this one here ever abandoned? is it because of budget cuts?, do they find a better facility elsewhere to provide the patients a better service?, or is it just for the sake of leaving them behind? I can't really tell....

  • i know this'll get people saying i'm crazy but I made sure to watch this in a happy feeling location with plenty of light, with the volume on silent without watching anything of htis nature previous. I must say once you get past the feelings of the kids who've partied and gone for a scare, you can feel some intense fear from those kids at some points, as well as the deeper emotions and events of the past. When was this abandoned/when was it primarily in use?

  • Asylum.

  • that was a really good video, great choice of music.

  • i've never been here, infact i dont even know what country sunderland is in, but i can almost like feel the vibes from that place. lots of sorrow it seems like. great photographs. 5/5 stars

  • It's in the uk. Thanks for the comments =)

  • Whey?

  • It's a geordie thing i think it has more than one meaning too.

  • So Wat Does It Mean?

  • I have no idea =)

  • lol

  • its a makem thing and it means yes

  • Ahh thanks for that =)

  • good job

  • Thanks =)

  • thats sick shit!!

  • Cheers =)

  • hell yeah I couldn't do that but I would like to one day!!!!

  • How many patients were sectioned in that place, terrible reputation, several residents were documented as commiting suicide in that building.

  • All those places have the same tale to tell i'm affraid.

  • My mum used to scare us with Cherry-knowles when I was a kid,we lived in Ryhope, the fence then was to keep residents inside, niw its to keep locals out, times change.

  • bad news i'm afraid. theres a huge fenced around it and Ronny Roid-munching security all around. We were up a few days ago and got threatened by some ape of a guard. its not worth the effort anymore which is a real shame. iwish id seen it before they fenced it off :(

  • Fenced? It's a bit late for that =)

  • i find these kinda things so (?)intreaging(?) and its like so amazing to me. yaaa like seeing old things just knowing that some one occupied that space along time agoo

  • I like them for the same reason =)

  • I know exactly what you mean.

I worked as an auxiliary nurse at Cherry Knowle for a few months in 1977-8, and I've been looking at the video, wondering if I've walked those very corridors.

It's a pity they've let the building get into that state. It's beautiful in its own way and should be preserved.

  • is there a huge security fence round it or is it still easily accessed

  • I dont know mate it's ages ago when i went. =)

  • excellent vid

    btw where is this place

  • Sunderland =)

  • Very well put together! Good job!

  • Thanks =)

  • cool :D

  • Thanks =)

  • i like that kind of stuff just walking around looking at the old things i know it sounds weird but its pretty fun and you get a sence of adventure.
