These two collaborated on this from 1950 thru 1952. Prokofiev later slightly revised it and changed the name from the Second Cello Concerto. He collaborated with others many times throughout his career, with great success.
A famous happening, Kamu had just won the Karajan competition being in his early twenties.autodidact, and chose going his own path by doing for instance this concert (for first time, you can see him having difficulties following Rostropovich) and Karajan didn´t like it.
@Mizzles240 You mean you LIKE his interpretation more. Because Rostropovich not only premiered and composed part of this piece, you really can't question if his interpretation is 'better' or 'worse'. I'm guessing his interpretation is closest to Prokofiev's intent.
I heard Rostropovich play this live in Washington, DC at Constitution Hall in 1965. It was the most amazing experience of my life. For me he was and will always be the greatest cellist to ever walk this earth.
The orchestra really is quite dreadful, isn't it? But Rostropovich is spectacular! If you've seen the Truls Mork version, there's no comparison. Truls Mork isn't really connected to the piece like Slava is.
I'll just say that this IS my favourite cello concerto. And I suppose as it was a very late work it was really written with this particular performer in mind.
Haha good grief. I must respectfully disagree, as Rococo really isn't that difficult. Sinfonie Concertante along with: Barber, Shostakovich, Haydn D and even Dvorak concerti are much harder in terms of technique.
Wow! This is the mostest amazingnest piece ever! This is proper grammar when I hear such wonderful music like this! :) O and a bit slowed down at 7:35? :P
Remember, it is the soloist that sets the tempo and the conductor is supposed to follow him (or her) and led the orchestra at the correct tempo. If Slave felt the tempo was too fast at that point, he would (and does) play it the way he feels is correct and the conductor should follow.
This is a terribly hard work to perform. In 1970 Rostropovitch was still playing incredibly. This was written for him. A famous lady cellist said this work is very hard, that is why it is not performed more.
I think Rostropovich had a nicer sound in the recording with Seiji Ozawa. I don't mean to be critical, but I don't think the orchestra here sounded too great.
Yeah....the orchestra isnt very good as an ensemble. As individual players im sure they are very good. But together its very unbalanced and they are not in tune with each other.
Why do people like you actually bother to put comments on utube? We visit this page to enjoy the music, and it is extremely unpleasant to have to see your uninformed garbage spattered all over it. If it were possible, I would give a thumbs-down rating for your comment.
¿And what do you think is the hardest? Some people say Beethoven's Triple Concerto is awful for the cello, but I'd like to know which is the hardest think to play for a cello (I'm learning now)
i disagree, and i believe 7th variation IS the coda? beethoven triple is definitely a demonic piece for cello. 7th variation does not even come close to the difficulty of the triple concerto.
@gagagoogoo They're both hard, but don't come near to the difficulty levels of Shostakovich, this, and the weird stuff like Dutilleux, Schoenberg-Monn, etc. (which are just inhuman). I think that Dvorak is harder than Rococo or Triple concerto. Rococo coda is just a bit harder than Elgar 4th movement I think.
@rasputin1357 i would have to disagree...though musically difficult, it doesn't require nearly the technical prowess of something such as the Prokofiev, or the Beethoven.
I've played both. I'd say this is harder purely because of endurance. In the Prokofiev, you have to play really difficult passages for a long period of time, while in the Beethoven it is more spread out. Opening of the Beethoven 3rd movement is so exposed tho -__-
Yo-Yo Ma once told me when I asked hm that was "The hardest piece to play is what you are learning at the moment" I was expecting him to say this piece was the hardest heheeh.. but my teach long ago said he knew someone who played this piece all the time and his hands got messed up coz of it...
what is the deal with the orchestra. It's just not balanced, I don't like it much, He's like so far and away above them in his musical interpretation. It must have been kind of akward in the hall... I don't know, maybe not.

@tobster5100 It is bent. This was in the days before the Stahlhammer endpins.
rasputin1357 1 year ago
@tobster5100 It is, downward, just the camera films it from a different angle, so it looks bent in another direction.

@tobster5100 Also Rostropovich has custom endpins so that he could have his cello tilted at his preferred angle

Haydn D is really difficult, but i think it's the same sort of difficulty as Beethoven triple and arpeggione.
Barber is also up there.

@desdemona1466
Try some Piatti Caprices (No.'s 10 & 12 are pretty hard).
Out of all of the pieces that I have played, the Prokofiev Sinfonia Concertante is one of the hardest. Especially this 2nd Movement.
