Favorite track from Can's 3rd effort w/ Suzuki in the fold. Love the shuffling beat, Damo's breathy, shivering vocals, the occasional guitar chord pinging in and out, even the drumstick clatter from the right-hand side speaker adds to the trippy effect. The effect is amazing, it holds together and yet ... try clapping your hands to this mesmerizing tempo! So weird, and so damned fine.
@ExitosGnosis Relistening, I agree that *most* of it is in 7, but I don't think everything always is. The slow cymbal hits that start at 2:00 are in a different meter and tempo (I hear them as 3), and starting at around 3:58 (start at 3:50 to get a couple of full bars) it sounds like Michael is dropping the end the bar here and there. It's a great, subtle piece of music.
Ha! The same tricky thing prosecutes my life since i listened to Gongs "Isle of Everywhere". Arrggghhh.... they change their counting inside the song that often.... and i am to dump to get it.... hehe.... that makes me totally crazy....
my god i never thought i'd hear this in this day and age. such fond fond memories, my mate and i were the only guys in our (ex) mining village in rural ayrshire Scotland to have any can records.lol. i can still remember my dad coming into my room and saying: "explain that to me and why it has to be loud" thanks for bringing all those times back to me e real treat. and doesn't peter gabriels' "digging in the dirt" owe so much to this song? anyone agree?
The German music scene of that period was probably the best in the world. All sorts of cool German bands doing this very meditative groove stuff. It was better than the US or Britain but didn't get close to the media attention.
it's annoying how everyone says bands like muse and coldplay are ripping radiohead off when most radiohead fans have never even heard of can. not saying radiohead ripps can off, but i wish people would realize no band is without influence. one can be influenced while still being original and creative (not saying coldplay is original or creative either, all personal opinion when it comes down to it).
Some influence is more obvious than other, but it has also got something to do with who the influence comes from. Coldplay and Muse are easy to hate, because their influence is one of the most well-known bands in history. It's a shame that people often hate bands, whose influence is obvious, but that's how it is.
@seapockets so what the fuck ARE you saying anyway? i think you raised some points and then systematically refuted yourself to the point that your paragraph shouldnt even exist.. hahaha.. no offense intended, i find it amusing..
Renoir the painter once said ...I hate Beethoven he always lets you know what a bad mood he is in... Mozart, He never does .. I always remember that, listening to Can..it always sound so Open..... the 'music' tells the story
I've known of Can for sometime now, but this was the first time that I've ever actually listened to a song from start to finish. Amazing stuff, there's so much going on here, I can only imagine how revelatory this would've been listening to it in the early 70s, unfortunately I'm so familiar with the derivatives.
the omnipotent, mighty CAN!!! this track is unbelievable!!! granted "TAGO MAGO" may be a better album, i believe this track is more defining of who CAN is; more so than "halleluwah off of TAGO MAGO. now "mushroom head", that's a track folks!!!

Imagine what the Western world would look like if music like this were popular instead of crap like Lady Gaga and Bieber.
Almost 40 years later, this still sounds unbelievably fresh to my ears...and that's the definition of timeless.

@MaestroTJS Imagine what youtube would be like if people didn't bitch about Gaga and Bieber in every song from every band that isn't mainstream.

I've known this for at least 25 years, and I still can't figure out the damn meter. Maybe it's in seven... but then it seems to shift.

@Kirke182 and this was a blessing since anglo-americans have the tendency to turn music into commercial product.
