  • Does anyone else think the end has some kind of symbolism....with Black being highlighted by the light of the sun?

  • the question is, what is truth? what do you seek for?

the debate is beyond religions, its more of a deep self-reflection on our beliefs and attitudes towards life.

to me, understanding the importance of knowledge and the pursuit of 'truth' does not overflow my philosophy of life in any way. we must all strike a balance between what is the truth and what we believe in.

  • If only the professor knew about Buddhism, he would be a monk by now. There's a way out, but suicide will only bring you back once again to this madness. Meditate and gain enlightenment, one can put out the flame of existence, no more suffering. Peace.

  • knowledge is evil

    ignorance is a bless

  • @mantoofli knowledge is everything, without it, mankind would still be living in caves or mud huts

  • have you ever imagine God and Satan talking???? well... this is a bite..

  • @lestatdevua That's ignorant to say. This isn't Satan vs God at all. None of them is "bad" or "good". Tommy Lee Jones' character is NOT bad at all.

    It's beliefs vs nihilism.

  • Well, the original comment said nothing about how "good" and "bad" relate to God and Satan. You did that. Understandably, because that's the dichotomy we as a society have internalized. But Satan is simply an angel who fundamentally disagreed with God, much like White fundamentally disagrees with Black. I don't think it's entirely fair to call this comparison ignorant, when it's actually an interesting exercise in perspective.

  • @elyseface You are completely right, that's a good point. It depends on what "Satan" is for him, or in his comment. But in Christianity, Satan in generally the "devil", the bad, the entity that tries to deceive one to take the "wrong path". As he didn't really go into details - as you pointed out - I guessed he didn't really have a deeper meaning in his comment and simply thought White is the deceiver who tries to break Black and pull him from the good path. Which I don't agree with.

  • @elyseface I'm glad someone pointed this out. Satan, as the enemy, is more than a cartoon villain, but something more fundamental than even that. As a Christian, I identify with both of the characters in this movie, as I believe there is truth to both of their philosophies honestly. Ecclesiastes is a great book that sort of covers both.

  • This movie actually reminded me of the beauty in the world around me, oddly enough. I was so moved by this scene that I walked outside on a cold October morning half dressed and bare-foot, simply to marvel at the gold-red woodland, to feel the earth cool and damp 'neath my feet, and to take in the scent that is the earth after nourishing rains. This is the most powerful movie I have ever seen, and I am glad to have watched it.

  • @FireAndFang Then you probably haven't seen "The Man From Earth".

  • Anger is a drug like no other - dillusional - and it is so addictive...... It always points inward after destroying everything outward of ones self. If you have ever had loved one that has committed suicide - then you will understand to some degree his behaviours. Love thy self and thy neighbor ---- is a concept that humanity will probably never truly understand.... Just a 4 letter word...... No matter what God you pray to --- at least pray for the strength and wisdom to do the right thing...

  • "A thing dangling in senseless articulation, a howling void, no meaning to it's life...it's "words". Why would I seek out the company of such a thing?"

  • Is there anywhere where I can find a transcript of this monologue? Is so powerful.

  • @SREproducciones simple, play-pause, play-pause, write it down

  • @Webzlinger probably... just probably, that was the kind of tedious work I wanted to avoid, taking into consideration the 10 minute lenght of the video.

  • @SREproducciones Oh, what the Hell. I'll do it. Copy and paste, my friend: W: Well, here is my news, reverend; I long for the Darkness. I pray for death, real death and if I thought that in death I would meet the people I knew in life, I don't know what I would do. That would be the ultimate horror. The ultimate nightmare-If I thought I was going to meet my mother again and start all of that all over, only this time, without the prospect of Death to look forward to, that would be the (cont)...

  • @SREproducciones (Part 2) Final Nightmare. Kafka on wheels. B: Damn, professor. You don't wanna see your own mama? W: No I don't. I want the dead to be dead, forever. And I want to be one of them. Except of course you can't be one of them. You can't be one of the dead because that which has no existence can have no community. No community... My heart warms just thinking about it. Blackness. Aloneness. Silence. Peace.... And all of it only a heartbeat away. (continued)

  • @SREproducciones Part 3: I don't regard my state of mind as some pessimistic view of the world. I regard it as the world itself. Evolution cannot avoid bringing intelligent life ultimately to an awareness of one thing and one thing above all else and that one thing is: Futility. B: If I'm understandin' you right, you sayin' everybody that ain't just eat up with the dumbass ought to be suicidal? You ain't shittin' me? W: No, I am not "shitting" you. (continued... Man, this is getting tiring).

  • (4): If people could see the world for what it truly is, see their lives for what they truly are, without dreams or illusions, I don't believe they could offer the first reason why they should not elect to die as soon as possible. I don't believe in God, do you understand that? Look around you man. Can't you see? The clamor and din of those in torment must be the sound most pleasing to His ears. And I loath these discussions. The argument of the village atheist, his single passion is to (cont)

  • @SREproducciones 5: Revile endlessly that which he denies the existence of, in the first place. Your fellowship is a fellowship of pain and nothing more and if that pain was collective instead of merely reiterative, the sheer weight of it would drag the world down, crashing and burning down into whatever night it might yet be capable of engendering until it was not even ash. And. Brotherhood, justice? Eternal life? Good God man. Show me a religion which prepares one for nothingness, for death.

  • 6: That's a Church I might enter. Yours prepares one only for more life. Dreams. And illusions. And lies. Banish the fear of death from men's hearts and they wouldn't a day. Who would want this nightmare, but for fear of the next? The shadow of the axe hangs over every joy. Every road ends in death. Every friendship, every love. Torment, loss, betrayal... Pain, suffering... Age.. Indignity.. Hideous, lingering illness. And all of it with a single conclusion. For you, and everyone and everything

  • 7: ... You have ever chosen to care for. That is the true fellowship, the true brotherhood and everyone is a member for life! You tell my brother is my salvation-my salvation. Well then damn him. Damn him in every shape and guise and form and do I see myself in himself? Yes I do, and what I see sickens me...! Do you understand me? Can you understand me? ..... I'm Sorry. B: How long have you felt like this? W: All my life. B: Is tha the truth? W: It's worse than that. B: I don't see what could...

  • @SREproducciones 8:... Be worse than that. W: Rage is only for the good days, and the truth is there's very little of that left. The truth is, that the forms I see have been slowly emptied out. They no longer have any content. They're just shapes only. A train, a wall, a world, a man. A thing dangling in senseless articulation, a howling void, no meaning to it's life...it's words. Why would I seek out the company of such a thing? B:.. Damn. W: So do you see what it is you saved? (cont)

  • @SREproducciones A bookstore in the theatre and arts section.

  • @SREproducciones 9: Still trying, trying hard. W: Who is your brother? B: Who is my brother! Yes. W: Is that the reason I'm here in your apartment? B: No, that's why I'm here. W: You asked me what I'm a professor of. I am a professor of Darkness. The night in day's clothing. Now I wish you all the very best, but I must go. B: Just stay a little while longer. W: No, no more time. Good bye. B: We can talk about something else, I swear. W: I don't want to talk about something else! B: (Continued)

  • 10: Don't go out there professor! You know what's out there! W: Oh, yes, indeed I do. I know what is out there and I know who is out there. I rush to nuzzle his boney cheek-No doubt, he will be surprised to find himself so cherished. And as I cling to his neck, I will whisper in that dry and ancient ear: "Here I am. Here I am." Now open the door! B: Don't do this. W: Your a kind man. I heard you out, you've heard me, there's no more to say. Your God must've once stood at a down of infinite...

  • @SREproducciones 11:... Possibilities and that, is what he's made of it. You tell me I want God's live, I don't Maybe I want forgiveness, but there's no-one to ask it of. And there's no going back, there's no setting things right. There is only the Hope of nothingness and I cling to that Hope. Now open the door. B: Don't do this. W: Please... Open the door..

    ... Thank you. Goodbye.

I assume you don't need the stuff said after White left, so I'll leave it at that. Phew.

  • @vgman94 Thank you!

  • @SREproducciones They sell it in written form.

  • Also Tommy Lee's speech here summarizes every cormac mccarthy book iv'e read.
